An enabling framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Europe: An overview of key issues. CEPS Policy Brief No 2019/03, 23 September 2019

here are few credible scenarios for reaching the EU’s long-term climate policy objectives, such as net-zero by 2050, without the large-scale deployment of CCS technology. Carbon capture and storage technology is a pre-requisite for the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries, which in the EU are responsible for about a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, carbon capture technologies have only been tested at smaller scales and are not yet available at scale for the multiple energy-intensive industries that need them. To prepare for largerscale CCS deployment in the period after 2030, steps should be taken today to address economic as well as political barriers, and thereby support development of key infrastructure and technology. In doing so, policy should focus on improving the investment case for both CCS as well as low carbon industrial products that carbon capture makes possible. This includes specific financing models that account for the high capital intensity of CCS, regional variation in industrial clusters, infrastructure and storage availability as well as the need to combine both private and public money

    Fun with filtering French

Early use of corpora for language learning has included analysis of word usage via concordancing. In addition, some attempts have been made to use readability criteria for recommending reading to learners. In this paper we discuss various tools and approaches for enhanced language learning support, including different methods of filtering text based on vocabulary and grammatical criteria. We demonstrate the effects of various criteria on the retrieval of text, assuming the user is English-speaking and learning French. Filtering text based on a small vocabulary of frequently occurring words, a set of English-French cognates and named entities, and high coverage criteria, results in the retrieval of short readable extracts from French literature. We expect that text available from the web may yield many more documents of appropriate readability

Morocco as a possible domestication center for barley: biochemical and agromorphological evidence.

The distribution of genetic variants of a group of low molecular weight, chloroform-methanol soluble proteins (CM proteins), among Moroccan and non-Moroccan accessions of Hordeum spontaneum and among selections from several Moroccan landraces of H. vulgare and cultivars of the same species with widespread European origin, suggests that domestication of barley might have taken place in Morocco. An agromorphological characterization of the H. spontaneum accessions further supports this hypothesis. The possible Moroccan origin of the French cultivar Hatif de Grignon and of several Spanish 6-rowed barleys is also presented

A metamorphic perspective on the Pan African overprint in the Amery area of Mac. Robertson Land, East Antarctica

The Amery area of Mac. Robertson Land lies between the early Palaeozoic granulite terrain of Prydz Bay and Meso-Neoproterozoic granulites in northern Prince Charles Mountains (nPCM). In contrast to the nPCM which shows an apparently simple near-isobaric history, granulites exposed in the Amery area contain reaction textures suggesting a more complex evolution. Peak-M1 Mesoproterozoic assemblages formed at c. 700 MPa and 800°C and initially underwent a near-isobaric cooling. A subsequent increase in temperature (M2) resulted in the formation of cordierite-spinel assemblages at ~450 MPa and 700°C in metapelite. The timing of M2 is not firmly established, however existing data strongly suggest it is an early Palaeozoic event coeval with tectonism in Prydz Bay to the north-east. Thus the metamorphic evolution of granulites in the Amery area reflects a terrain-scale thermal interference pattern between two unrelated orogenic events. In rocks not recording post-M1 isobaric cooling, the superposition of M2 on M1 assemblages resulted in the formation of M2 cordierite-spinel symplectites at the expense of peak M1 garnet and sillimanite. This texture, commonly interpreted to reflect near-isothermal decompression, has no relevance in terms of a single tectonothermal event in the Amery area.Ian Scrimgeour and Martin Han
