Performance Analysis and Enhancement of Multiband OFDM for UWB Communications
In this paper, we analyze the frequency-hopping orthogonal frequency-division
multiplexing (OFDM) system known as Multiband OFDM for high-rate wireless
personal area networks (WPANs) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission.
Besides considering the standard, we also propose and study system performance
enhancements through the application of Turbo and Repeat-Accumulate (RA) codes,
as well as OFDM bit-loading. Our methodology consists of (a) a study of the
channel model developed under IEEE 802.15 for UWB from a frequency-domain
perspective suited for OFDM transmission, (b) development and quantification of
appropriate information-theoretic performance measures, (c) comparison of these
measures with simulation results for the Multiband OFDM standard proposal as
well as our proposed extensions, and (d) the consideration of the influence of
practical, imperfect channel estimation on the performance. We find that the
current Multiband OFDM standard sufficiently exploits the frequency selectivity
of the UWB channel, and that the system performs in the vicinity of the channel
cutoff rate. Turbo codes and a reduced-complexity clustered bit-loading
algorithm improve the system power efficiency by over 6 dB at a data rate of
480 Mbps.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on

Outage Performance Analysis of Multicarrier Relay Selection for Cooperative Networks
In this paper, we analyze the outage performance of two multicarrier relay
selection schemes, i.e. bulk and per-subcarrier selections, for two-hop
orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To provide a
comprehensive analysis, three forwarding protocols: decode-and-forward (DF),
fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) and variable-gain (VG) AF relay
systems are considered. We obtain closed-form approximations for the outage
probability and closed-form expressions for the asymptotic outage probability
in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region for all cases. Our analysis is
verified by Monte Carlo simulations, and provides an analytical framework for
multicarrier systems with relay selection
Outage Analysis of Uplink Two-tier Networks
Employing multi-tier networks is among the most promising approaches to
address the rapid growth of the data demand in cellular networks. In this
paper, we study a two-tier uplink cellular network consisting of femtocells and
a macrocell. Femto base stations, and femto and macro users are assumed to be
spatially deployed based on independent Poisson point processes. We consider an
open access assignment policy, where each macro user based on the ratio between
its distances from its nearest femto access point (FAP) and from the macro base
station (MBS) is assigned to either of them. By tuning the threshold, this
policy allows controlling the coverage areas of FAPs. For a fixed threshold,
femtocells coverage areas depend on their distances from the MBS; Those closest
to the fringes will have the largest coverage areas. Under this open-access
policy, ignoring the additive noise, we derive analytical upper and lower
bounds on the outage probabilities of femto users and macro users that are
subject to fading and path loss. We also study the effect of the distance from
the MBS on the outage probability experienced by the users of a femtocell. In
all cases, our simulation results comply with our analytical bounds
Multihop Diversity in Wideband OFDM Systems: The Impact of Spatial Reuse and Frequency Selectivity
The goal of this paper is to establish which practical routing schemes for
wireless networks are most suitable for wideband systems in the power-limited
regime, which is, for example, a practically relevant mode of operation for the
analysis of ultrawideband (UWB) mesh networks. For this purpose, we study the
tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency (known as the
power-bandwidth tradeoff) in a wideband linear multihop network in which
transmissions employ orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)
modulation and are affected by quasi-static, frequency-selective fading.
Considering open-loop (fixed-rate) and closed-loop (rate-adaptive) multihop
relaying techniques, we characterize the impact of routing with spatial reuse
on the statistical properties of the end-to-end conditional mutual information
(conditioned on the specific values of the channel fading parameters and
therefore treated as a random variable) and on the energy and spectral
efficiency measures of the wideband regime. Our analysis particularly deals
with the convergence of these end-to-end performance measures in the case of
large number of hops, i.e., the phenomenon first observed in \cite{Oyman06b}
and named as ``multihop diversity''. Our results demonstrate the realizability
of the multihop diversity advantages in the case of routing with spatial reuse
for wideband OFDM systems under wireless channel effects such as path-loss and
quasi-static frequency-selective multipath fading.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Proc. 2008 IEEE International Symposium

Outage Performance of Two-Hop OFDM Systems with Spatially Random Decode-and-Forward Relays
In this paper, we analyze the outage performance of different multicarrier
relay selection schemes for two-hop orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing
(OFDM) systems in a Poisson field of relays. In particular, special emphasis is
placed on decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems, equipped with bulk and
per-subcarrier selection schemes, respectively. The exact expressions for
outage probability are derived in integrals for general cases. In addition,
asymptotic expressions for outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR) region in the finite circle relay distribution region are determined in
closed forms for both relay selection schemes. Also, the outage probabilities
for free space in the infinite relay distribution region are derived in closed
forms. Meanwhile, a series of important properties related to cooperative
systems in random networks are investigated, including diversity, outage
probability ratio of two selection schemes and optimization of the number of
subcarriers in terms of system throughput. All analysis is numerically verified
by simulations. Finally, a framework for analyzing the outage performance of
OFDM systems with spatially random relays is constructed, which can be easily
modified to analyze other similar cases with different forwarding protocols,
location distributions and/or channel conditions
