Mechanical Engineering: Medium-Sized Companies with Highest Savings Potential
The German mechanical engineering industry, dominated by medium-sized companies, is greatly successful - both on the domestic and on the international market. A first analysis conducted by DIW Berlin reveals that this success cannot be attributed to a better exploitation of potential efficiencies - mechanical engineering is about as efficient as other key sectors (for instance the chemical industry). In fact, despite their obvious success medium-sized mechanical engineering businesses have larger savings potential than bigger companies and even than smaller enterprises in this industry.Data envelopment analysis, German engineering firms, Efficiency, Firm size

Heat Transfer Activity for a First-Year Mechanical Engineering Course
A heat transfer educational activity is designed for
freshman students who declare a mechanical engineering major.
This activity is part of an introductory course given during the
first year to introduce students to mechanical engineering and
give them tools to use in while pursuing their Bachelors of
Science degree in mechanical engineering.
The activity is designed to challenge students in
learning heat transfer concepts. However, its rigor is planned for
students (at the freshman level) who have not yet taken the
prerequisites required for heat transfer.
The activity is scalable and can be easily deployed in
other educational institutes. It is presented with its goals, goal
attainment measures, and feedback representing the student
perception.Cockrell School of Engineerin
Rasionalitas Mahasiswi dalam Memilih Jurusan Teknik Mesin di Universitas Riau
This study was did in Faculity of Engineering University of Riau. This aims to knowing social perception (family, friends) of gender role as female students in mechanical engineering major and to knowing female students rationality of faculity of engineering doing their every single role as students in mechanical engineering major. This study entitled Rasionality of Female Students in Choosing Mechanical Engineering Major in University of Riau. This study was started from September 2016 until April 2017. The date collection technique is using sampling technique amount to 7 persons. The result of this study indicate that rasionality of female students in choosing mechanical engineering major because of the many job opportunities for mechanical engineering graduates. Rasionality of female students in doing their every single role is adaptation to around the majority of male, such as respect each other, unselfish, and help each other. Family and friends perception of female students who choose mechanical engineering major are reasonable as long as female students able to do their every single role and able to protect themselves from majority of male
Optomechanics assisted with a qubit: From dissipative state preparation to many-body physics
We propose and analyze nonlinear optomechanical protocols that can be
implemented by adding a single atom to an optomechanical cavity. In particular,
we show how to engineer the environment in order to dissipatively prepare the
mechanical oscillator in a superposition of Fock states with fidelity close to
one. Furthermore, we discuss how a single atom in a cavity with several
mechanical oscillators can be exploited to realize nonlinear many-body physics
by stroboscopically driving the mechanical oscillators. We show how to prepare
non-classical many-body states by either applying coherent protocols or
engineering dissipation. The analysis of the protocols is carried out using a
perturbation theory for degenerate Liouvillians and numerical tools. Our
results apply to other systems where a qubit is coupled to a mechanical
oscillator via a bosonic mode, e.g., in cavity quantum electromechanics
Raising sector skills levels : how responsive is local training supply?
This UK study examines the extent and nature of any mismatches between the training requirements of employers and the local provision of vocational education and training (VET). Companies in selected sectors (maintenance and repair of motor vehicles; telecommunications services; mechanical engineering, vehicles and other engineering; and textiles, clothing and footwear manufacture) and regions were surveyed on their training requirements. Staff in colleges and training providers in the same regions were interviewed to discuss the survey findings and to investigate the extent to which these providers are already satisfying those requirements and the nature of any constraints which may be present
Technical feasibility study for the development of a large capacity wind powered electrical generating system
The engineering feasibility of developing a basic mechanical system necessary for extracting large amounts of power (on the order of 10 to 20 MW) from the wind is considered using the concept of vertical airfoils moving along a closed horizontal track system. Attention is focused on those components necessary for the conversion of wind energy to mechanical energy, although the general characteristics and critical aspects of other components are also considered. The four phases of this program are: (1) Establishment of component specifications and interface requirements for major system components; (2) formulation of alternative sets of conceptual designs for major system components; (3) engineering analysis of various components and systems; and (4) re-examination of basic concept and identification of any desirable follow-up work
Implementing Mechatronics Design Methodology in Mechanical Engineering Technology Senior Design Projects at the Old Dominion University
In recent years, the nature of engineering design has changed due to advances in embedded system design and computer technologies. It is rare to engineer a purely mechanical design that does not incorporate electrical and electronic components. Mechanical engineers and mechanical engineering technologists must possess a multi-disciplinary knowledge with the understanding of both mechanical and electrical systems. For this purpose, undergraduate programs in engineering technology have added mechatronics courses to their curriculum. Mechatronics is a design process that is multi-disciplinary in nature and integrates principles of many engineering disciplines including, but not limited to, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and controls engineering. These courses typically incorporate problem-based learning and project-based pedagogy to effectively build the student’s knowledge and understanding. Old Dominion University’s Mechanical Engineering Technology (ODU MET) program offers undergraduate courses related to Advanced Manufacturing including Robotics; Automation; Lean Manufacturing; Computer Integrated Manufacturing; and Advanced Manufacturing Processes. Recently, two new courses related to mechatronics were added to the same focus area. In addition, ODU MET program has placed an increased emphasis on mechatronics for students’ senior design projects. This paper highlights the benefits of including mechatronics in the ODU MET curriculum and presents several recent senior design projects that showcase how the student has incorporated multi-disciplinary principles into the design and build of a functional mechatronic device. By embedding these experience into their senior design project, students are exposed to other engineering technology areas, learn the terminology of other professions, and feel more confident to join the workforce with the cross-disciplinary skills needed to be successful
