    Product-based Neural Networks for User Response Prediction

    Predicting user responses, such as clicks and conversions, is of great importance and has found its usage in many Web applications including recommender systems, web search and online advertising. The data in those applications is mostly categorical and contains multiple fields; a typical representation is to transform it into a high-dimensional sparse binary feature representation via one-hot encoding. Facing with the extreme sparsity, traditional models may limit their capacity of mining shallow patterns from the data, i.e. low-order feature combinations. Deep models like deep neural networks, on the other hand, cannot be directly applied for the high-dimensional input because of the huge feature space. In this paper, we propose a Product-based Neural Networks (PNN) with an embedding layer to learn a distributed representation of the categorical data, a product layer to capture interactive patterns between inter-field categories, and further fully connected layers to explore high-order feature interactions. Our experimental results on two large-scale real-world ad click datasets demonstrate that PNNs consistently outperform the state-of-the-art models on various metrics.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, ICDM201

    An Academic Search Engine for Personalized Rankings

    Rapidly increasing information on the Internet and the World Wide Web can lead to information overload. Search engines become important tools to help WWW users to discover information. Exponential increases in published research papers, academic search engines become indispensable tools to search for papers in their expertise and related fields. In order to improve the quality of search, an academic search engines' capability should be enhanced. This paper proposes a search engine for personalized rankings. In order to evaluate the performance of personalized rankings, thirty-five graduate students from the Department of Web Engineering and Mobile Application Development at Dhurakij Pundit University are participants in the research experiment. Participants are asked to use a prototype of an academic search engine to find and bookmark any research papers according to their interests, which would guarantee that each participants' list of interesting research papers could be recorded. Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG) is used as a metric to determine the performance of the personalized rankings. The experiments suggest that the personalized rankings outperform the original search rankings. Hence, the proposed academic search engine with personalized ranking benefits research paper discovery

    Characterizing Search Behavior in Productivity Software

    Complex software applications expose hundreds of commands to users through intricate menu hierarchies. One of the most popular productivity software suites, Microsoft Office, has recently developed functionality that allows users to issue free-form text queries to a search system to quickly find commands they want to execute, retrieve help documentation or access web results in a unified interface. In this paper, we analyze millions of search sessions originating from within Microsoft Office applications, collected over one month of activity, in an effort to characterize search behavior in productivity software. Our research brings together previous efforts in analyzing command usage in large-scale applications and efforts in understanding search behavior in environments other than the web. Our findings show that users engage primarily in command search, and that re-accessing commands through search is a frequent behavior. Our work represents the first large-scale analysis of search over command spaces and is an important first step in understanding how search systems integrated with productivity software can be successfully developed

    Event detection from click-through data via query clustering

    The web is an index of real-world events and lot of knowledge can be mined from the web resources and their derivatives. Event detection is one recent research topic triggered from the domain of web data mining with the increasing popularity of search engines. In the visitor-centric approach, the click-through data generated by the web search engines is the start up resource with the intuition: often such data is event-driven. In this thesis, a retrospective algorithm is proposed to detect such real-world events from the click-through data. This approach differs from the existing work as it: (i) considers the click-through data as collaborative query sessions instead of mere web logs and try to understand user behavior (ii) tries to integrate the semantics, structure, and content of queries and pages (iii) aims to achieve the overall objective via Query Clustering. The problem of event detection is transformed into query clustering by generating clusters - hybrid cover graphs; each hybrid cover graph corresponds to a real-world event. The evolutionary pattern for the co-occurrences of query-page pairs in a hybrid cover graph is imposed for the quality purpose over a moving window period. Also, the approach is experimentally evaluated on a commercial search engine\u27s data collected over 3 months with about 20 million web queries and page clicks from 650000 users.
