Cross-Layer Optimization of Fast Video Delivery in Cache-Enabled Relaying Networks
This paper investigates the cross-layer optimization of fast video delivery
and caching for minimization of the overall video delivery time in a two-hop
relaying network. The half-duplex relay nodes are equipped with both a cache
and a buffer which facilitate joint scheduling of fetching and delivery to
exploit the channel diversity for improving the overall delivery performance.
The fast delivery control is formulated as a two-stage functional non-convex
optimization problem. By exploiting the underlying convex and quasi-convex
structures, the problem can be solved exactly and efficiently by the developed
algorithm. Simulation results show that significant caching and buffering gains
can be achieved with the proposed framework, which translates into a reduction
of the overall video delivery time. Besides, a trade-off between caching and

Multi-View Video Packet Scheduling
In multiview applications, multiple cameras acquire the same scene from
different viewpoints and generally produce correlated video streams. This
results in large amounts of highly redundant data. In order to save resources,
it is critical to handle properly this correlation during encoding and
transmission of the multiview data. In this work, we propose a
correlation-aware packet scheduling algorithm for multi-camera networks, where
information from all cameras are transmitted over a bottleneck channel to
clients that reconstruct the multiview images. The scheduling algorithm relies
on a new rate-distortion model that captures the importance of each view in the
scene reconstruction. We propose a problem formulation for the optimization of
the packet scheduling policies, which adapt to variations in the scene content.
Then, we design a low complexity scheduling algorithm based on a trellis search
that selects the subset of candidate packets to be transmitted towards
effective multiview reconstruction at clients. Extensive simulation results
confirm the gain of our scheduling algorithm when inter-source correlation
information is used in the scheduler, compared to scheduling policies with no
information about the correlation or non-adaptive scheduling policies. We
finally show that increasing the optimization horizon in the packet scheduling
algorithm improves the transmission performance, especially in scenarios where
the level of correlation rapidly varies with time
CLEVER: a cooperative and cross-layer approach to video streaming in HetNets
We investigate the problem of providing a video streaming service to mobile users in an heterogeneous cellular network composed of micro e-NodeBs (eNBs) and macro e-NodeBs (MeNBs). More in detail, we target a cross-layer dynamic allocation of the bandwidth resources available over a set of eNBs and one MeNB, with the goal of reducing the delay per chunk experienced by users. After optimally formulating the problem of minimizing the chunk delay, we detail the Cross LayEr Video stReaming (CLEVER) algorithm, to practically tackle it. CLEVER makes allocation decisions on the basis of information retrieved from the application layer aswell as from lower layers. Results, obtained over two representative case studies, show that CLEVER is able to limit the chunk delay, while also reducing the amount of bandwidth reserved for offloaded users on the MeNB, as well as the number of offloaded users. In addition, we show that CLEVER performs clearly better than two selected reference algorithms, while being very close to a best bound. Finally, we show that our solution is able to achieve high fairness indexes and good levels of Quality of Experience (QoE)
Device-Centric Cooperation in Mobile Networks
The increasing popularity of applications such as video streaming in today's
mobile devices introduces higher demand for throughput, and puts a strain
especially on cellular links. Cooperation among mobile devices by exploiting
both cellular and local area connections is a promising approach to meet the
increasing demand. In this paper, we consider that a group of cooperative
mobile devices, exploiting both cellular and local area links and within
proximity of each other, are interested in the same video content. Traditional
network control algorithms introduce high overhead and delay in this setup as
the network control and cooperation decisions are made in a source-centric
manner. Instead, we develop a device-centric stochastic cooperation scheme. Our
device-centric scheme; DcC allows mobile devices to make control decisions such
as flow control, scheduling, and cooperation without loss of optimality. Thanks
to being device-centric, DcC reduces; (i) overhead; i.e., the number of control
packets that should be transmitted over cellular links, so cellular links are
used more efficiently, and (ii) the amount of delay that each packet
experiences, which improves quality of service. The simulation results
