    New Building Blocks for Cancer Phototherapeutics: 5d Metallocorroles

    Corroles are ring-contracted, triprotic analogues of porphyrins. This PhD study expands earlier knowledge in particular on ReO corroles. Early on, it became apparent that ReO corroles exhibit the highest phosphorescence quantum yields among all metallocorroles. They also sensitize singlet oxygen formation and serve as oxygen sensors and as triplet-triplet annihilation upconverters. I accordingly wanted to synthesize new classes of functionalized 5d corroles as well as to examine ReO corroles as photosensitizers in in vitro photodynamic therapy experiments. I found that amphiphilic meta/para-carboxyl-appended ReO triphenylcorroles exhibit high photocytotoxicity against multiple cancer cell lines. In the synthetic realm, one study examined electrophilic chlorination and bromination of ReO corroles. X-ray structures of ReO octachloro- and octabromocorroles yielded a host of insights into the conformational preferences of sterically hindered corrole derivatives. Another synthetic study afforded an innovative approach to water-soluble iridium corroles, involving the use of water-soluble axial ligands. I also undertook extensive studies of formylation of ReO and Au triarylcorroles, arriving at the rather elegant conclusion that whereas the former largely afford 3-monoformyl products, the latter preferentially yield 3,17-diformylproducts, presumably reflecting the higher nucleophilicity of the Au complexes. The formylcorrole products could be readily postfunctionalized, such as via the Knoevenagel reaction. The 5d formylcorroles should serve as valuable starting materials for bio- and nanoconjugated 5d metallocorroles for advanced, targeted cancer therapies. I feel privileged to have developed a new class of triplet photosensitizers – the ReO corroles – that to this day remain unique to our Tromsø laboratory. I am confident, however, that we shall soon see exciting applications of these compounds as advanced photodynamic, photothermal and multimodal cancer therapeutics

    KYT2022 Finnish Research Programme on Nuclear Waste Management 2019–2022 : Final Report

    KYT2022 (Finnish Research Programme on Nuclear Waste Management 2019–2022), organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, was a national research programme with the objective to ensure that the authorities have sufficient levels of nuclear expertise and preparedness that are needed for safety of nuclear waste management. The starting point for public research programs on nuclear safety is that they create the conditions for maintaining the knowledge required for the continued safe and economic use of nuclear energy, developing new know-how and participating in international collaboration. The content of the KYT2022 research programme was composed of nationally important research topics, which are the safety, feasibility and acceptability of nuclear waste management. KYT2022 research programme also functioned as a discussion and information-sharing forum for the authorities, those responsible for nuclear waste management and the research organizations, which helped to make use of the limited research resources. The programme aimed to develop national research infrastructure, ensure the continuing availability of expertise, produce high-level scientific research and increase general knowledge of nuclear waste management

    Neural Architecture Search: Insights from 1000 Papers

    In the past decade, advances in deep learning have resulted in breakthroughs in a variety of areas, including computer vision, natural language understanding, speech recognition, and reinforcement learning. Specialized, high-performing neural architectures are crucial to the success of deep learning in these areas. Neural architecture search (NAS), the process of automating the design of neural architectures for a given task, is an inevitable next step in automating machine learning and has already outpaced the best human-designed architectures on many tasks. In the past few years, research in NAS has been progressing rapidly, with over 1000 papers released since 2020 (Deng and Lindauer, 2021). In this survey, we provide an organized and comprehensive guide to neural architecture search. We give a taxonomy of search spaces, algorithms, and speedup techniques, and we discuss resources such as benchmarks, best practices, other surveys, and open-source libraries

    É com grande prazer que apresentamos a mais recente edição (a 11.ª) do Anuário Científico da Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa. Como instituição de ensino superior, temos o compromisso de promover e incentivar a pesquisa científica em todas as áreas do conhecimento que contemplam a nossa missão. Esta publicação tem como objetivo divulgar toda a produção científica desenvolvida pelos Professores, Investigadores, Estudantes e Pessoal não Docente da ESTeSL durante 2021. Este Anuário é, assim, o reflexo do trabalho árduo e dedicado da nossa comunidade, que se empenhou na produção de conteúdo científico de elevada qualidade e partilhada com a Sociedade na forma de livros, capítulos de livros, artigos publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais, resumos de comunicações orais e pósteres, bem como resultado dos trabalhos de 1º e 2º ciclo. Com isto, o conteúdo desta publicação abrange uma ampla variedade de tópicos, desde temas mais fundamentais até estudos de aplicação prática em contextos específicos de Saúde, refletindo desta forma a pluralidade e diversidade de áreas que definem, e tornam única, a ESTeSL. Acreditamos que a investigação e pesquisa científica é um eixo fundamental para o desenvolvimento da sociedade e é por isso que incentivamos os nossos estudantes a envolverem-se em atividades de pesquisa e prática baseada na evidência desde o início dos seus estudos na ESTeSL. Esta publicação é um exemplo do sucesso desses esforços, sendo a maior de sempre, o que faz com que estejamos muito orgulhosos em partilhar os resultados e descobertas dos nossos investigadores com a comunidade científica e o público em geral.     The determinants of value addition: a crtitical analysis of global software engineering industry in Sri Lanka

    It was evident through the literature that the perceived value delivery of the global software engineering industry is low due to various facts. Therefore, this research concerns global software product companies in Sri Lanka to explore the software engineering methods and practices in increasing the value addition. The overall aim of the study is to identify the key determinants for value addition in the global software engineering industry and critically evaluate the impact of them for the software product companies to help maximise the value addition to ultimately assure the sustainability of the industry. An exploratory research approach was used initially since findings would emerge while the study unfolds. Mixed method was employed as the literature itself was inadequate to investigate the problem effectively to formulate the research framework. Twenty-three face-to-face online interviews were conducted with the subject matter experts covering all the disciplines from the targeted organisations which was combined with the literature findings as well as the outcomes of the market research outcomes conducted by both government and nongovernment institutes. Data from the interviews were analysed using NVivo 12. The findings of the existing literature were verified through the exploratory study and the outcomes were used to formulate the questionnaire for the public survey. 371 responses were considered after cleansing the total responses received for the data analysis through SPSS 21 with alpha level 0.05. Internal consistency test was done before the descriptive analysis. After assuring the reliability of the dataset, the correlation test, multiple regression test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were carried out to fulfil the requirements of meeting the research objectives. Five determinants for value addition were identified along with the key themes for each area. They are staffing, delivery process, use of tools, governance, and technology infrastructure. The cross-functional and self-organised teams built around the value streams, employing a properly interconnected software delivery process with the right governance in the delivery pipelines, selection of tools and providing the right infrastructure increases the value delivery. Moreover, the constraints for value addition are poor interconnection in the internal processes, rigid functional hierarchies, inaccurate selections and uses of tools, inflexible team arrangements and inadequate focus for the technology infrastructure. The findings add to the existing body of knowledge on increasing the value addition by employing effective processes, practices and tools and the impacts of inaccurate applications the same in the global software engineering industry

    Cost-effective non-destructive testing of biomedical components fabricated using additive manufacturing

    Biocompatible titanium-alloys can be used to fabricate patient-specific medical components using additive manufacturing (AM). These novel components have the potential to improve clinical outcomes in various medical scenarios. However, AM introduces stability and repeatability concerns, which are potential roadblocks for its widespread use in the medical sector. Micro-CT imaging for non-destructive testing (NDT) is an effective solution for post-manufacturing quality control of these components. Unfortunately, current micro-CT NDT scanners require expensive infrastructure and hardware, which translates into prohibitively expensive routine NDT. Furthermore, the limited dynamic-range of these scanners can cause severe image artifacts that may compromise the diagnostic value of the non-destructive test. Finally, the cone-beam geometry of these scanners makes them susceptible to the adverse effects of scattered radiation, which is another source of artifacts in micro-CT imaging. In this work, we describe the design, fabrication, and implementation of a dedicated, cost-effective micro-CT scanner for NDT of AM-fabricated biomedical components. Our scanner reduces the limitations of costly image-based NDT by optimizing the scanner\u27s geometry and the image acquisition hardware (i.e., X-ray source and detector). Additionally, we describe two novel techniques to reduce image artifacts caused by photon-starvation and scatter radiation in cone-beam micro-CT imaging. Our cost-effective scanner was designed to match the image requirements of medium-size titanium-alloy medical components. We optimized the image acquisition hardware by using an 80 kVp low-cost portable X-ray unit and developing a low-cost lens-coupled X-ray detector. Image artifacts caused by photon-starvation were reduced by implementing dual-exposure high-dynamic-range radiography. For scatter mitigation, we describe the design, manufacturing, and testing of a large-area, highly-focused, two-dimensional, anti-scatter grid. Our results demonstrate that cost-effective NDT using low-cost equipment is feasible for medium-sized, titanium-alloy, AM-fabricated medical components. Our proposed high-dynamic-range strategy improved by 37% the penetration capabilities of an 80 kVp micro-CT imaging system for a total x-ray path length of 19.8 mm. Finally, our novel anti-scatter grid provided a 65% improvement in CT number accuracy and a 48% improvement in low-contrast visualization. Our proposed cost-effective scanner and artifact reduction strategies have the potential to improve patient care by accelerating the widespread use of patient-specific, bio-compatible, AM-manufactured, medical components

    Freelance subtitlers in a subtitle production network in the OTT industry in Thailand: a longitudinal study

    The present study sets out to investigate a subtitle production network in the over-the-top (OTT) industry in Thailand through the perspective of freelance subtitlers. A qualitative longitudinal research design was adopted to gain insights into (1) the way the work practices of freelance subtitlers are influenced by both human and non-human actors in the network, (2) the evolution of the network, and (3) how the freelance subtitlers’ perception of quality is influenced by changes occurring in the network. Eleven subtitlers were interviewed every six months over a period of two years, contributing to over 60 hours of interview data. The data analysis was informed by selected concepts from Actor-Network Theory (ANT) (Law 1992, 2009; Latour 1996, 2005; Mol 2010), and complemented by the three-dimensional quality model proposed by Abdallah (2016, 2017). Reflexive thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2019a, 2020b) was used to generate themes and sub-themes which address the research questions and tell compelling stories about the actor-network. It was found that from July 2017 to September 2019, the subtitle production network, which was sustained by complex interrelationships between actors, underwent a number of changes. The changes affected the work practices of freelance subtitlers in a more negative than positive way, demonstrating their precarious position in an industry that has widely adopted the vendor model (Moorkens 2017). Moreover, as perceived by the research participants, under increasingly undesirable working conditions, it became more challenging to maintain a quality process and to produce quality subtitles. Finally, translation technology and tools, including machine translation, were found to be key non-human actors that catalyse the changes in the network under study

    REDESIGNING THE COUNTER UNMANNED SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE

Please contact [email protected] for access.When the Islamic State used Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to target coalition forces in 2014, the use of UAVs rapidly expanded, giving weak states and non-state actors an asymmetric advantage over their technologically superior foes. This asymmetry led the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to spend vast sums of money on counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS). Despite the market density, many C-UAS technologies use expensive, bulky, and high-power-consuming electronic attack methods for ground-to-air interdiction. This thesis outlines the current technology used for C-UAS and proposes a defense-in-depth framework using airborne C-UAS patrols outfitted with cyber-attack capabilities. Using aerial interdiction, this thesis develops a novel C-UAS device called the Detachable Drone Hijacker—a low-size, weight, and power C-UAS device designed to deliver cyber-attacks against commercial UAVs using the IEEE 802.11 wireless communication specification. The experimentation results show that the Detachable Drone Hijacker, which weighs 400 grams, consumes one Watt of power, and costs $250, can interdict adversarial UAVs with no unintended collateral damage.     Visual Servo Based Space Robotic Docking for Active Space Debris Removal

    This thesis developed a 6DOF pose detection algorithm using machine learning capable of providing the orientation and location of an object in various lighting conditions and at different angles, for the purposes of space robotic rendezvous and docking control. The computer vision algorithm was paired with a virtual robotic simulation to test the feasibility of using the proposed algorithm for visual servo. This thesis also developed a method for generating virtual training images and corresponding ground truth data including both location and orientation information. Traditional computer vision techniques struggle to determine the 6DOF pose of an object when certain colors or edges are not found, therefore training a network is an optimal choice. The 6DOF pose detection algorithm was implemented on MATLAB and Python. The robotic simulation was implemented on Simulink and ROS Gazebo.
