    In this paper, a new method for designing two-channel PR FIR filterbanks with low system delay is proposed. It is based on the generalization of the structure previously proposed by Phoong et al. Such structurally PR filterbanks are parameterized by two functions (β(z) and α(z)) that can be chosen as linear-phase FIR or allpass functions to construct FIR/IIR filterbanks with good frequency characteristics. The case of using identical β(z) and α(z) was considered by Phoong et al. with the delay parameter M chosen as 2N - 1. In this paper, the more general case of using different nonlinear-phase FIR functions for β(z) and α(z) is studied. As the linear-phase constraint is relaxed, the lengths of β(z) and α(z) are no longer restricted by the delay parameters of the filterbanks. Hence, higher stopband attenuation can still be achieved at low system delay. The design of the proposed low-delay filterbanks is formulated as a complex polynomial approximation problem, which can be solved by the Remez exchange algorithm or analytic formula with very low complexity. In addition, the orders and delay parameters can be estimated from the given filter specifications using a simple empirical formula. Therefore, low-delay two-channel PR filterbanks with flexible stopband attenuation and cutoff frequencies can be designed using existing filter design algorithms. The generalization of the present approach to the design of a class of wavelet bases associated with these low-delay filterbanks and its multiplier-less implementation using the sum of powers-of-two coefficients are also studied.published_or_final_versio

    On the eigenfilter design method and its applications: a tutorial

    The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications

    A robust and scalable implementation of the Parks-McClellan algorithm for designing FIR filters

    Preliminary version accepted for publicationInternational audienceWith a long history dating back to the beginning of the 1970s, the Parks-McClellan algorithm is probably the most well-known approach for designing finite impulse response filters. Despite being a standard routine in many signal processing packages, it is possible to find practical design specifications where existing codes fail to work. Our goal is twofold. We first examine and present solutions for the practical difficulties related to weighted minimax polynomial approximation problems on multi-interval domains (i.e., the general setting under which the Parks-McClellan algorithm operates). Using these ideas, we then describe a robust implementation of this algorithm. It routinely outperforms existing minimax filter design routines

    An efficient design or fractional-delay digital FIR filters using the Farrow structure

    Fractional-delay digital filter (FD-DF), implemented using the Farrow (1988) structure, is very attractive in providing online tuning delay of digital signals. This paper proposes a new method for the design of such Farrow-based FD-DF using sum-of-powers-of-two (SOPOT) coefficients. Using the SOPOT coefficient representation, coefficient multiplication can be implemented with limited number of shifts and additions. Design examples show that the proposed method can greatly reduce the design time and complexity of the Farrow structure while providing comparable phase and amplitude responses.published_or_final_versio

    Using Bayesian Inference in Design Applications

    This dissertation presents a new approach for solving engineering design problems such as the design of antenna arrays and finite impulse response (FIR) filters. In this approach, a design problem is cast as an inverse problem. The tools and methods previously developed for Bayesian inference are adapted and utilized to solve design problems. Given a desired design output, Bayesian parameter estimation and model comparison are employed to produce designs that meet the prescribed design specifications and requirements. In the Bayesian inference framework, the solution to a design problem is the posterior distribution, which is proportional to the product of the likelihood and priors. The likelihood is obtained via the assignment of a distribution to the error between the desired and achieved design output. The priors are assigned distributions which express constraints on the design parameters. Other design requirements are implemented by modifying the likelihood. The posterior --- which cannot be determined analytically --- is approximated by a Markov chain Monte Carlo method by drawing a reasonable number of samples from it. Each posterior sample represents a design candidate and a designer needs to select a single candidate as the final design based on additional design criteria. The Bayesian inference framework has been applied to design antenna arrays and FIR filters. The antenna array examples presented here use different types of array such as planar array, symmetric, asymmetric and reconfigurable linear arrays to realize various desired radiation patterns which include broadside, end-fire, shaped beam, and three-dimensional patterns. Various practical design requirements such as a minimum spacing between two adjacent elements, limitations in the dynamic range and accuracy of the current amplitudes and phases, the ability to maintain antenna performance over a frequency band, and the ability to sustain the loss of an arbitrary element, have been incorporated. For the filter design application, all presented examples employ a linear phase FIR filter to produce various desired frequency responses. In practice, the filter coefficients are limited in dynamic range and accuracy. This requirement has been incorporated into two examples where the filter coefficients are represented by a sum of signed power-of-two terms
