    Runtime Scheduling, Allocation, and Execution of Real-Time Hardware Tasks onto Xilinx FPGAs Subject to Fault Occurrence

    This paper describes a novel way to exploit the computation capabilities delivered by modern Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), not only towards a higher performance, but also towards an improved reliability. Computation-specific pieces of circuitry are dynamically scheduled and allocated to different resources on the chip based on a set of novel algorithms which are described in detail in this article. These algorithms consider most of the technological constraints existing in modern partially reconfigurable FPGAs as well as spontaneously occurring faults and emerging permanent damage in the silicon substrate of the chip. In addition, the algorithms target other important aspects such as communications and synchronization among the different computations that are carried out, either concurrently or at different times. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is tested by means of a wide range of synthetic simulations, and, notably, a proof-of-concept implementation of them using real FPGA hardware is outlined

    A Survey of Techniques For Improving Energy Efficiency in Embedded Computing Systems

    Recent technological advances have greatly improved the performance and features of embedded systems. With the number of just mobile devices now reaching nearly equal to the population of earth, embedded systems have truly become ubiquitous. These trends, however, have also made the task of managing their power consumption extremely challenging. In recent years, several techniques have been proposed to address this issue. In this paper, we survey the techniques for managing power consumption of embedded systems. We discuss the need of power management and provide a classification of the techniques on several important parameters to highlight their similarities and differences. This paper is intended to help the researchers and application-developers in gaining insights into the working of power management techniques and designing even more efficient high-performance embedded systems of tomorrow

    A Dynamically Reconfigurable Parallel Processing Framework with Application to High-Performance Video Processing

    Digital video processing demands have and will continue to grow at unprecedented rates. Growth comes from ever increasing volume of data, demand for higher resolution, higher frame rates, and the need for high capacity communications. Moreover, economic realities force continued reductions in size, weight and power requirements. The ever-changing needs and complexities associated with effective video processing systems leads to the consideration of dynamically reconfigurable systems. The goal of this dissertation research was to develop and demonstrate the viability of integrated parallel processing system that effectively and efficiently apply pre-optimized hardware cores for processing video streamed data. Digital video is decomposed into packets which are then distributed over a group of parallel video processing cores. Real time processing requires an effective task scheduler that distributes video packets efficiently to any of the reconfigurable distributed processing nodes across the framework, with the nodes running on FPGA reconfigurable logic in an inherently Virtual\u27 mode. The developed framework, coupled with the use of hardware techniques for dynamic processing optimization achieves an optimal cost/power/performance realization for video processing applications. The system is evaluated by testing processor utilization relative to I/O bandwidth and algorithm latency using a separable 2-D FIR filtering system, and a dynamic pixel processor. For these applications, the system can achieve performance of hundreds of 640x480 video frames per second across an eight lane Gen I PCIe bus. Overall, optimal performance is achieved in the sense that video data is processed at the maximum possible rate that can be streamed through the processing cores. This performance, coupled with inherent ability to dynamically add new algorithms to the described dynamically reconfigurable distributed processing framework, creates new opportunities for realizable and economic hardware virtualization.\u2

    Modeling and formal verification of probabilistic reconfigurable systems

    In this thesis, we propose a new approach for formal modeling and verification of adaptive probabilistic systems. Dynamic reconfigurable systems are the trend of all future technological systems, such as flight control systems, vehicle electronic systems, and manufacturing systems. In order to meet user and environmental requirements, such a dynamic reconfigurable system has to actively adjust its configuration at run-time by modifying its components and connections, while changes are detected in the internal/external execution environment. On the other hand, these changes may violate the memory usage, the required energy and the concerned real-time constraints since the behavior of the system is unpredictable. It might also make the system's functions unavailable for some time and make potential harm to human life or large financial investments. Thus, updating a system with any new configuration requires that the post reconfigurable system fully satisfies the related constraints. We introduce GR-TNCES formalism for the optimal functional and temporal specification of probabilistic reconfigurable systems under resource constraints. It enables the optimal specification of a probabilistic, energetic and memory constraints of such a system. To formally verify the correctness and the safety of such a probabilistic system specification, and the non-violation of its properties, an automatic transformation from GR-TNCES models into PRISM models is introduced. Moreover, a new approach XCTL is also proposed to formally verify reconfigurable systems. It enables the formal certification of uncompleted and reconfigurable systems. A new version of the software ZIZO is also proposed to model, simulate and verify such GR-TNCES model. To prove its relevance, the latter was applied to case studies; it was used to model and simulate the behavior of an IPV4 protocol to prevent the energy and memory resources violation. It was also used to optimize energy consumption of an automotive skid conveyor.In dieser Arbeit wird ein neuer Ansatz zur formalen Modellierung und Verifikation dynamisch rekonfigurierbarer Systeme vorgestellt. Dynamische rekonfigurierbare Systeme sind in vielen aktuellen und zukĂŒnftigen Anwendungen, wie beispielsweise Flugsteuerungssystemen, Fahrzeugelektronik und Fertigungssysteme zu finden. Diese Systeme weisen ein probabilistisches, adaptives Verhalten auf. Um die Benutzer- und Umgebungsbedingungen kontinuierlich zu erfĂŒllen, muss ein solches System seine Konfiguration zur Laufzeit aktiv anpassen, indem es seine Komponenten, Verbindungen zwischen Komponenten und seine Daten modifiziert (adaptiv), sobald Änderungen in der internen oder externen AusfĂŒhrungsumgebung erkannt werden (probabilistisch). Diese Anpassungen dĂŒrfen BeschrĂ€nkungen bei der Speichernutzung, der erforderlichen Energie und bestehende Echtzeitbedingungen nicht verletzen. Eine nicht geprĂŒfte Rekonfiguration könnte dazu fĂŒhren, dass die Funktionen des Systems fĂŒr einige Zeit nicht verfĂŒgbar wĂ€ren und potenziell menschliches Leben gefĂ€hrdet wĂŒrde oder großer finanzieller Schaden entstĂŒnde. Somit erfordert das Aktualisieren eines Systems mit einer neuen Konfiguration, dass das rekonfigurierte System die zugehörigen BeschrĂ€nkungen vollstĂ€ndig einhĂ€lt. Um dies zu ĂŒberprĂŒfen, wird in dieser Arbeit der GR-TNCES-Formalismus, eine Erweiterung von Petrinetzen, fĂŒr die optimale funktionale und zeitliche Spezifikation probabilistischer rekonfigurierbarer Systeme unter RessourcenbeschrĂ€nkungen vorgeschlagen. Die entstehenden Modelle sollen ĂŒber probabilistische model checking verifiziert werden. Dazu eignet sich die etablierte Software PRISM. Um die Verifikation zu ermöglichen wird in dieser Arbeit ein Verfahren zur Transformation von GR-TNCES-Modellen in PRISM-Modelle beschrieben. Eine neu eingefĂŒhrte Logik (XCTL) erlaubt zudem die einfache Beschreibung der zu prĂŒfenden Eigenschaften. Die genannten Schritte wurden in einer Softwareumgebung fĂŒr den automatisierten Entwurf, die Simulation und die formale Verifikation (durch eine automatische Transformation nach PRISM) umgesetzt.     Model-based design of correct controllers for dynamically reconfigurable architectures

    International audienceDynamically reconfigurable hardware has been identified as a promising solution for the design of energy efficient embedded systems. However, its adoption is limited by the costly design effort including verification and validation, which is even more complex than for non dynamically reconfigurable systems. In this paper, we propose a tool-supported formal method to automatically design a correct-by-construction control of the reconfiguration. By representing system behaviors with automata, we exploit automated algorithms to synthesize controllers that safely enforce reconfiguration strategies formulated as properties to be satisfied by control. We design generic modeling patterns for a class of reconfigurable architectures, taking into account both hardware architecture and applications, as well as relevant control objectives. We validate our approach on two case studies implemented on FPGAs
