    Optimal Mesh Algorithms for the Voronoi Diagram of Line Segments, Visibility Graphs and Motion Planning in the Plane

    The motion planning problem for an object with two degrees of freedom moving in the plane can be stated as follows: Given a set of polygonal obstacles in the plane, and a two-dimensional mobile object B with two degrees of freedom, determine if it is possible to move B from a start position to a final position while avoiding the obstacles. If so, plan a path for such a motion. Techniques from computational geometry have been used to develop exact algorithms for this fundamental case of motion planning. In this paper we obtain optimal mesh implementations of two different methods for planning motion in the plane. We do this by first presenting optimal mesh algorithms for some geometric problems that, in addition to being important substeps in motion planning, have numerous independent applications in computational geometry. In particular, we first show that the Voronoi diagram of a set of n nonintersecting (except possibly at endpoints) line segments in the plane can be constructed in O(√n) time on a √n x √n mesh, which is optimal for the mesh. Consequently, we obtain an optimal mesh implementation of the sequential motion planning algorithm described in [14]; in other words, given a disc B and a polygonal obstacle set of size n, we can plan a path (if it exists) for the motion of B from a start position to a final position in O (√n) time on a mesh of size n. Next we show that given a set of n line segments and a point p, the set of segment endpoints that are visible from p can be computed in O (√n) mesh-optimal time on a √n x √n mesh. As a result, the visibility graph of a set of n line segments can be computed in O(n) time on an n x n mesh. This result leads to an O(n) algorithm on an n x n mesh for planning the shortest path motion between a start position and a final position for a convex object B (of constant size) moving among convex polygonal obstacles of total size n

    The problem of algorithmic motion planning is one that has received considerable attention in recent years. The automatic planning of motion for a mobile object moving amongst obstacles is a fundamentally important problem with numerous applications in computer graphics and robotics. Numerous approximate techniques (AI-based, heuristics-based, potential field methods, for example) for motion planning have long been in existence, and have resulted in the design of experimental systems that work reasonably well under various special conditions [7, 29, 30]. Our interest in this problem, however, is in the use of algorithmic techniques for motion planning, with provable worst case performance guarantees. The study of algorithmic motion planning has been spurred by recent research that has established the mathematical depth of motion planning. Classical geometry, algebra, algebraic geometry and combinatorics are some of the fields of mathematics that have been used to prove various results that have provided better insight into the issues involved in motion planning [49]. In particular, the design and analysis of geometric algorithms has proved to be very useful for numerous important special cases.     Motion Planning for Triple-Axis Spectrometers

    We present the free and open source software TAS-Paths, a novel system which calculates optimal, collision-free paths for the movement of triple-axis spectrometers. The software features an easy to use graphical user interface, but can also be scripted and used as a library. It allows the user to plan and visualise the motion of the instrument before the experiment and can be used during measurements to circumvent obstacles. The instrument path is calculated in angular configuration space in order to keep a maximum angular distance from any obstacle.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

There were 53 papers presented at the Workshop, covering a wide range of topics. This record number shows that the field of computational geometry is very much alive in Europe. We wish to thank all the authors who submitted papers and presented their work at the workshop. We believe that this has lead to a collection of very interesting abstracts that are both enjoyable and informative for the reader.     Geometric-based Optimization Algorithms for Cable Routing and Branching in Cluttered Environments

    The need for designing lighter and more compact systems often leaves limited space for planning routes for the connectors that enable interactions among the system’s components. Finding optimal routes for these connectors in a densely populated environment left behind at the detail design stage has been a challenging problem for decades. A variety of deterministic as well as heuristic methods has been developed to address different instances of this problem. While the focus of the deterministic methods is primarily on the optimality of the final solution, the heuristics offer acceptable solutions, especially for such problems, in a reasonable amount of time without guaranteeing to find optimal solutions. This study is an attempt to furthering the efforts in deterministic optimization methods to tackle the routing problem in two and three dimensions by focusing on the optimality of final solutions. The objective of this research is twofold. First, a mathematical framework is proposed for the optimization of the layout of wiring connectors in planar cluttered environments. The problem looks at finding the optimal tree network that spans multiple components to be connected with the aim of minimizing the overall length of the connectors while maximizing their common length (for maintainability and traceability of connectors). The optimization problem is formulated as a bi-objective problem and two solution methods are proposed: (1) to solve for the optimal locations of a known number of breakouts (where the connectors branch out) using mixed-binary optimization and visibility notion and (2) to find the minimum length tree that spans multiple components of the system and generates the optimal layout using the previously-developed convex hull based routing. The computational performance of these methods in solving a variety of problems is further evaluated. Second, the problem of finding the shortest route connecting two given nodes in a 3D cluttered environment is considered and addressed through deterministically generating a graphical representation of the collision-free space and searching for the shortest path on the found graph. The method is tested on sample workspaces with scattered convex polyhedra and its computational performance is evaluated. The work demonstrates the NP-hardness aspect of the problem which becomes quickly intractable as added components or increase in facets are considered
