    Dynamically Stable 3D Quadrupedal Walking with Multi-Domain Hybrid System Models and Virtual Constraint Controllers

    Hybrid systems theory has become a powerful approach for designing feedback controllers that achieve dynamically stable bipedal locomotion, both formally and in practice. This paper presents an analytical framework 1) to address multi-domain hybrid models of quadruped robots with high degrees of freedom, and 2) to systematically design nonlinear controllers that asymptotically stabilize periodic orbits of these sophisticated models. A family of parameterized virtual constraint controllers is proposed for continuous-time domains of quadruped locomotion to regulate holonomic and nonholonomic outputs. The properties of the Poincare return map for the full-order and closed-loop hybrid system are studied to investigate the asymptotic stabilization problem of dynamic gaits. An iterative optimization algorithm involving linear and bilinear matrix inequalities is then employed to choose stabilizing virtual constraint parameters. The paper numerically evaluates the analytical results on a simulation model of an advanced 3D quadruped robot, called GR Vision 60, with 36 state variables and 12 control inputs. An optimal amble gait of the robot is designed utilizing the FROST toolkit. The power of the analytical framework is finally illustrated through designing a set of stabilizing virtual constraint controllers with 180 controller parameters.Comment: American Control Conference 201

    Keep Rollin' - Whole-Body Motion Control and Planning for Wheeled Quadrupedal Robots

    We show dynamic locomotion strategies for wheeled quadrupedal robots, which combine the advantages of both walking and driving. The developed optimization framework tightly integrates the additional degrees of freedom introduced by the wheels. Our approach relies on a zero-moment point based motion optimization which continuously updates reference trajectories. The reference motions are tracked by a hierarchical whole-body controller which computes optimal generalized accelerations and contact forces by solving a sequence of prioritized tasks including the nonholonomic rolling constraints. Our approach has been tested on ANYmal, a quadrupedal robot that is fully torque-controlled including the non-steerable wheels attached to its legs. We conducted experiments on flat and inclined terrains as well as over steps, whereby we show that integrating the wheels into the motion control and planning framework results in intuitive motion trajectories, which enable more robust and dynamic locomotion compared to other wheeled-legged robots. Moreover, with a speed of 4 m/s and a reduction of the cost of transport by 83 % we prove the superiority of wheeled-legged robots compared to their legged counterparts.Comment: IEEE Robotics and Automation Letter

    The geometric structure of nonholonomic mechanics

    Many important problems in multibody dynamics, the dynamics of wheeled vehicles and motion generation, involve nonholonomic mechanics. Many of these systems have symmetry, such as the group of Euclidean motions in the plane or in space and this symmetry plays an important role in the theory. Despite considerable advances on both Hamiltonian and Lagrangian sides of the theory, there remains much to do. We report on progress on two of these fronts. The first is a Poisson description of the equations that is equivalent to those given by Lagrangian reduction, and second, a deeper understanding of holonomy for such systems. These results promise to lead to further progress on the stability issues and on locomotion generatio

    Poisson reduction for nonholonomic mechanical systems with symmetry

    This paper continues the work of Koon and Marsden [1997b] that began the comparison of the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations of nonholonomic systems. Because of the necessary replacement of conservation laws with the momentum equation, it is natural to let the value of momentum be a variable and for this reason it is natural to take a Poisson viewpoint. Some of this theory has been started in van der Schaft and Maschke [1994]. We build on their work, further develop the theory of nonholonomic Poisson reduction, and tie this theory to other work in the area. We use this reduction procedure to organize nonholonomic dynamics into a reconstruction equation, a nonholonomic momentum equation and the reduced Lagrange d’Alembert equations in Hamiltonian form. We also show that these equations are equivalent to those given by the Lagrangian reduction methods of Bloch, Krishnaprasad, Marsden and Murray [1996]. Because of the results of Koon and Marsden [1997b], this is also equivalent to the results of Bates and Sniatycki [1993], obtained by nonholonomic symplectic reduction. Two interesting complications make this effort especially interesting. First of all, as we have mentioned, symmetry need not lead to conservation laws but rather to a momentum equation. Second, the natural Poisson bracket fails to satisfy the Jacobi identity. In fact, the so-called Jacobiizer (the cyclic sum that vanishes when the Jacobi identity holds), or equivalently, the Schouten bracket, is an interesting expression involving the curvature of the underlying distribution describing the nonholonomic constraints. The Poisson reduction results in this paper are important for the future development of the stability theory for nonholonomic mechanical systems with symmetry, as begun by Zenkov, Bloch and Marsden [1997]. In particular, they should be useful for the development of the powerful block diagonalization properties of the energy-momentum method developed by Simo, Lewis and Marsden [1991]

    Nonholonomic Hybrid Zero Dynamics for the Stabilization of Periodic Orbits: Application to Underactuated Robotic Walking

    This brief addresses zero dynamics associated with relative degree one and two nonholonomic outputs for exponential stabilization of given periodic orbits for hybrid models of bipedal locomotion. Zero dynamics manifolds are constructed to contain the orbit while being invariant under both the continuous- and discrete-time dynamics. The associated restriction dynamics are termed the hybrid zero dynamics (HZD). Prior results on the HZD have mainly relied on input–output linearization of holonomic outputs and are referred to as holonomic HZD (H-HZD). This brief presents reduced-order expressions for the HZD associated with nonholonomic output functions referred to as nonholonomic HZD (NH-HZD). This brief systematically synthesizes NH-HZD controllers to stabilize periodic orbits based on a reduced-order stability analysis. A comprehensive study of H-HZD and NH-HZD is presented. It is shown that NH-HZD can stabilize a broader range of walking gaits that are not stabilizable through traditional H-HZD. The power of the analytical results is finally illustrated on a hybrid model of a bipedal robot through numerical simulations

    Symmetries in Motion: Geometric Foundations of Motion Control

    Some interesting aspects of motion and control, such as those found in biological and robotic locomotion and attitude control of spacecraft, involve geometric concepts. When an animal or a robot moves its joints in a periodic fashion, it can rotate or move forward. This observation leads to the general idea that when one variable in a system moves in a periodic fashion, motion of the Whole object can result. This property can be used for control purposes; the position and attitude Of a satellite, for example, are often controlled by periodic motions of parts of the satellite, such as spinning rotors. One of the geometric tools that has been used to describe this phenomenon is that of connections, a notion that is used extensively in general relativity and other parts of theoretical physics. This tool, part of the general subject Of geometric mechanics, has been helpful in the study of both the stability and instability of a system and system bifurcations, that is, changes in the nature of the system dynamics, as some parameter changes. Geometric mechanics, currently in a period of rapid evolution, has been used, for example, to design stabilizing feedback control systems in attitude dynamics. Theory is also being developed for systems with rolling constraints such as those found in a simple rolling wheel. This paper explains how some of these tools of geometric mechanics are used in the study of motion control and locomotion generation

    Steering for a Class of Dynamic Nonholonomic Systems

    In this paper we derive control algorithms for a class of dynamic nonholonomic steering problems, characterized as mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints and symmetries. Recent research in geometric mechanics has led to a single, simplified framework that describes this class of systems, which includes examples such as wheeled mobile robots; undulatory robotic and biological locomotion systems, such as paramecia, inchworms, and snakes; and the reorientation of satellites and underwater vehicles. This geometric framework has also been applied to more unusual examples, such as the snakeboard robot, bicycles, the wobblestone, and the reorientation of a falling cat. We use this geometric framework as a basis for developing two types of control algorithms for such systems. The first is geared towards local controllability, using a perturbation approach to establish results similar to steering using sinusoids. The second method utilizes these results in applying more traditional steering algorithms for mobile robots, and is directed towards generating more non-local control methods of steering for this class of systems

    We develop the dynamic model for a planar ROLLERBLADER. The robot consists of a rigid platform and two planar, two degree-of-freedom legs with in-line skates at the foot. The dynamic model consists of two unicycles coupled through the rigid body dynamics of the planar platform. We derive the Lagrangian reduction for the ROLLERBLADING robot. We show the generation of some simple gaits that allow the platform to move forward and rotate by using cyclic motions of the two legs

    The Mechanics and Control of Undulatory Robotic Locomotion

    In this dissertation, we examine a formulation of problems of undulatory robotic locomotion within the context of mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints and symmetries. Using tools from geometric mechanics, we study the underlying structure found in general problems of locomotion. In doing so, we decompose locomotion into two basic components: internal shape changes and net changes in position and orientation. This decomposition has a natural mathematical interpretation in which the relationship between shape changes and locomotion can be described using a connection on a trivial principal fiber bundle. We begin by reviewing the processes of Lagrangian reduction and reconstruction for unconstrained mechanical systems with Lie group symmetries, and present new formulations of this process which are easily adapted to accommodate external constraints. Additionally, important physical quantities such as the mechanical connection and reduced mass-inertia matrix can be trivially determined using this formulation. The presence of symmetries then allows us to reduce the necessary calculations to simple matrix manipulations. The addition of constraints significantly complicates the reduction process; however, we show that for invariant constraints, a meaningful connection can be synthesized by defining a generalized momentum representing the momentum of the system in directions allowed by the constraints. We then prove that the generalized momentum and its governing equation possess certain invariances which allows for a reduction process similar to that found in the unconstrained case. The form of the reduced equations highlights the synthesized connection and the matrix quantities used to calculate these equations. The use of connections naturally leads to methods for testing controllability and aids in developing intuition regarding the generation of various locomotive gaits. We present accessibility and controllability tests based on taking derivatives of the connection, and relate these tests to taking Lie brackets of the input vector fields. The theory is illustrated using several examples, in particular the examples of the snakeboard and Hirose snake robot. We interpret each of these examples in light of the theory developed in this thesis, and examine the generation of locomotive gaits using sinusoidal inputs and their relationship to the controllability tests based on Lie brackets
