A Taxonomy for Congestion Control Algorithms in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
One of the main criteria in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) that has
attracted the researchers' consideration is congestion control. Accordingly,
many algorithms have been proposed to alleviate the congestion problem,
although it is hard to find an appropriate algorithm for applications and
safety messages among them. Safety messages encompass beacons and event-driven
messages. Delay and reliability are essential requirements for event-driven
messages. In crowded networks where beacon messages are broadcasted at a high
number of frequencies by many vehicles, the Control Channel (CCH), which used
for beacons sending, will be easily congested. On the other hand, to guarantee
the reliability and timely delivery of event-driven messages, having a
congestion free control channel is a necessity. Thus, consideration of this
study is given to find a solution for the congestion problem in VANETs by
taking a comprehensive look at the existent congestion control algorithms. In
addition, the taxonomy for congestion control algorithms in VANETs is presented
based on three classes, namely, proactive, reactive and hybrid. Finally, we
have found the criteria in which fulfill prerequisite of a good congestion
control algorithm
Resource Allocation for Delay Differentiated Traffic in Multiuser OFDM Systems
Most existing work on adaptive allocation of subcarriers and power in
multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has focused
on homogeneous traffic consisting solely of either delay-constrained data
(guaranteed service) or non-delay-constrained data (best-effort service). In
this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in a heterogeneous
multiuser OFDM system with both delay-constrained (DC) and
non-delay-constrained (NDC) traffic. The objective is to maximize the sum-rate
of all the users with NDC traffic while maintaining guaranteed rates for the
users with DC traffic under a total transmit power constraint. Through our
analysis we show that the optimal power allocation over subcarriers follows a
multi-level water-filling principle; moreover, the valid candidates competing
for each subcarrier include only one NDC user but all DC users. By converting
this combinatorial problem with exponential complexity into a convex problem or
showing that it can be solved in the dual domain, efficient iterative
algorithms are proposed to find the optimal solutions. To further reduce the
computational cost, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm is also developed.
Numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the performance the proposed
algorithms in terms of service outage probability, achievable transmission rate

A cross-layer approach to enhance QoS for multimedia applications over satellite
The need for on-demand QoS support for communications over satellite is of primary importance for distributed multimedia applications. This is particularly true for the return link which is often a bottleneck due to the large set of end-users accessing a very limited uplink resource. Facing this need, Demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) is a classical technique that allows satellite operators to offer various types of services, while managing the resources of the satellite system efficiently. Tackling the quality degradation and delay accumulation issues that can result from the use of these techniques, this paper proposes an instantiation of the Application Layer Framing (ALF) approach, using a cross-layer interpreter(xQoS-Interpreter). The information provided by this interpreter is used to manage the resource provided to a terminal by the satellite system in order to improve the quality of multimedia presentations from the end users point of view. Several experiments are carried out for different loads on the return link. Their impact on QoS is measured through different application as well as network level metrics
