Mainframe computers are the backbone of industrial and commercial computing, hosting the most relevant and critical data of businesses. One of the most important mainframe environments is IBM System z with the operating system z/OS. This book introduces mainframe technology of System z and z/OS with respect to high availability and scalability. It highlights their presence on different levels within the hardware and software stack to satisfy the needs for large IT organizations

Many people still associate mainframes with obsolete technology. Surprisingly, the opposite is true. Mainframes feature many hardware, software, and system integration technologies, that are either not at all, or only in an elementary form, available on other server platforms. On the other hand, we know of no advanced server features which are not available on mainframes. This paper lists some 40 advanced mainframe technologies. There is a short description of each item together with a literature reference for more information

Automation and abstraction for scalable z/VM Linux administration on the zSeries mainframe

This thesis considers the administration of virtual machines on IBM mainframes running z/VM.Asolution for administrating z/VM through a Linux VMrunning on a custom designed z/VM architecture is developed and implemented. The administration tool used is a slightly expanded version of MLN. The expansions added allows MLN to utilize plugins for technology specific code. Support for z/VM are then added through the creation and introduction of a plugin containing all z/VM specific code. Results from scenarios conducted shows that the administration process can be significantly automated and abstracted from a normal z/VM perspective. Also, increased security and safety is achieved through the protective limitations and control offered by the Programmable Operator running on z/VM.Master i nettverks- og systemadministrasjo

Open-standard development environment for IBM System z9 host firmware

    No full text
When the PL8 64-bit GNU compiler collection front end was\ud introduced with the IBM z990 system, it laid the foundation to move toward an open-standard development environment for the i390 layer of IBM System ze host firmware. However, when the z990 system was developed, the proprietary project development library system and the table of contents object file format for i390 code were still being used. With the IBM System z9e, we have moved to a fully open-standard development environment. This paper describes the steps we took to get there, to improve code performance, development efficiency, and regression testing, and to develop base functionality for important System z9 features such as enhanced driver maintenance. We also discuss plans to further enhance the development environment for future systems

katedra: KIN; přílohy: 1 CD-ROM,; rozsah: 85s.(137 000 znaků) 3s. přílohThe dissertation is dealing with the possible savings in alternative software implementation at Ministry of Local Development. It is dealing above all with open source products which are distributed free but also it is dealing with commercial programmes affordable for payment. It is trying to express the differences among them and terms of implementation, also is trying to find the most convenient solution in present approach of the ministry. Software products in analysis are divided into operating programmes and user programmes. Alternative compatibility software question is taken into an account also, in connection with present software. Practical implementation of virtualization is analyzed as well as a modern and effective solution of financial and labour economies at present improvement of public services. The dissertation is presenting successful illustration from economies from the world and similar implementations for the ministry.
