Effect of flow resistance in open rectangular channel

    Get PDF
The determination of flow resistance for open channels remains a challenge in practices. In this research, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the hydraulic roughness characteristics in an open channel. The experimental flume (10 m length, 0.30 m width and 0.46 height) was carried out with two conditions ; contain gravel bed and without gravel bed (as controller). Blocks of concrete foam were fabricated and laid on the bed surface for providing uniformly roughened along the open channel. A velocity flow meter was used to quantify the average velocity, and other parameters such as cross-section, hydraulic radius, wetted perimeter, and channel slopes were also calculated. Finally, the flow resistance, n obtained using the flume with gravel bed surface is higher than the flume without gravel bed surface. The flow conditions were declared as subcritical as the Froude number is less than 1 for both conditions in the flume. As a conclusion, it was identified that the hydraulic roughness n, was influenced by the type bed roughness, flow rate and channel slope

Shear Flows of Rapidly Flowing Granular Materials

Shear flows of granular materials are studied in an open channel. The wall shear is calculated from an open channel momentum equation which includes the density variations in the flow. An experimental technique was developed that allowed the measurement of the average density of the flow at different longitudinal locations in the channel. Two sizes of glass beads are examined and results show the variations in the wall shear as a function of various dimensionless parameters

Fluid-flow restrictor has degree of restriction easily and accurately controlled during manufacture. Restrictor's flow channel is machined square thread around a solid slug which is shrink-fitted to cylindrical case. One end of case is closed, open end capped, and both ends tapped for tube fittings for fluid flow

Scaling Aspects of Lyari River Flow Routing

In this communication we utilize an improved version for model proposed by Manning for the waste flow via an open channel Lyari. We have computed the status of discharges, storages and depth for all locations of the Lyari waste flow using this proposed model. We have found that the result obtained using this model is good agreement for the recent data sets.Open Channel, Proposed Model, Flow, Storage, Depth, Comparison

Influence of hydraulic resistance on flow features in an open channel confluence

    Get PDF
A numerical model based on the 3D shallow water equations is set up for a 90° angle open channel confluence. The model is first calibrated and validated using experimental data by (Shumate, 1998). Then a series of numerical simulations is carried out, systematically increasing the friction coefficient, in order to investigate the impact of hydraulic resistance on the flow features in an open channel confluence. The properties of the separation zone (width and length) are found to be substantially altered by the hydraulic resistance. The hydrodynamic processes are analysed zooming in onto lateral momentum fluxes

Classical aspects of Hawking radiation verified in analogue gravity experiment

There is an analogy between the propagation of fields on a curved spacetime and shallow water waves in an open channel flow. By placing a streamlined obstacle into an open channel flow we create a region of high velocity over the obstacle that can include wave horizons. Long (shallow water) waves propagating upstream towards this region are blocked and converted into short (deep water) waves. This is the analogue of the stimulated Hawking emission by a white hole (the time inverse of a black hole). The measurements of amplitudes of the converted waves demonstrate that they appear in pairs and are classically correlated; the spectra of the conversion process is described by a Boltzmann-distribution; and the Boltzmann-distribution is determined by the determined by the change in flow across the white hole horizon.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures; draft of a chapter submitted to the proceedings of the IX'th SIGRAV graduate school: Analogue Gravity, Lake Como, Italy, May 201
