Answering Complex Questions Using Open Information Extraction
While there has been substantial progress in factoid question-answering (QA),
answering complex questions remains challenging, typically requiring both a
large body of knowledge and inference techniques. Open Information Extraction
(Open IE) provides a way to generate semi-structured knowledge for QA, but to
date such knowledge has only been used to answer simple questions with
retrieval-based methods. We overcome this limitation by presenting a method for
reasoning with Open IE knowledge, allowing more complex questions to be
handled. Using a recently proposed support graph optimization framework for QA,
we develop a new inference model for Open IE, in particular one that can work
effectively with multiple short facts, noise, and the relational structure of
tuples. Our model significantly outperforms a state-of-the-art structured
solver on complex questions of varying difficulty, while also removing the
reliance on manually curated knowledge.Comment: Accepted as short paper at ACL 201
Compositional Semantic Parsing on Semi-Structured Tables
Two important aspects of semantic parsing for question answering are the
breadth of the knowledge source and the depth of logical compositionality.
While existing work trades off one aspect for another, this paper
simultaneously makes progress on both fronts through a new task: answering
complex questions on semi-structured tables using question-answer pairs as
supervision. The central challenge arises from two compounding factors: the
broader domain results in an open-ended set of relations, and the deeper
compositionality results in a combinatorial explosion in the space of logical
forms. We propose a logical-form driven parsing algorithm guided by strong
typing constraints and show that it obtains significant improvements over
natural baselines. For evaluation, we created a new dataset of 22,033 complex
questions on Wikipedia tables, which is made publicly available
TriviaQA: A Large Scale Distantly Supervised Challenge Dataset for Reading Comprehension
We present TriviaQA, a challenging reading comprehension dataset containing
over 650K question-answer-evidence triples. TriviaQA includes 95K
question-answer pairs authored by trivia enthusiasts and independently gathered
evidence documents, six per question on average, that provide high quality
distant supervision for answering the questions. We show that, in comparison to
other recently introduced large-scale datasets, TriviaQA (1) has relatively
complex, compositional questions, (2) has considerable syntactic and lexical
variability between questions and corresponding answer-evidence sentences, and
(3) requires more cross sentence reasoning to find answers. We also present two
baseline algorithms: a feature-based classifier and a state-of-the-art neural
network, that performs well on SQuAD reading comprehension. Neither approach
comes close to human performance (23% and 40% vs. 80%), suggesting that
TriviaQA is a challenging testbed that is worth significant future study. Data

Table Search Using a Deep Contextualized Language Model
Pretrained contextualized language models such as BERT have achieved
impressive results on various natural language processing benchmarks.
Benefiting from multiple pretraining tasks and large scale training corpora,
pretrained models can capture complex syntactic word relations. In this paper,
we use the deep contextualized language model BERT for the task of ad hoc table
retrieval. We investigate how to encode table content considering the table
structure and input length limit of BERT. We also propose an approach that
incorporates features from prior literature on table retrieval and jointly
trains them with BERT. In experiments on public datasets, we show that our best
approach can outperform the previous state-of-the-art method and BERT baselines
