A Suboptimal Receiver with Turbo Block Coding for Ultra-Wideband Communications
In this paper, the performance of adaptive equalization and turbo product coding is investigated for pulse-based UWB communications in short-range indoor environments. The sensitivity of adaptive LMS linear and nonlinear (decision-feedback) equalizers with respect to the number of training symbols and number of taps is considered. To reduce the error performance variation with respect to changing channel conditions, a turbo product code (TPC) with two component (31,26,3) Hamming codes is proposed. We report simulation results showing that channel coding not only improves error performance, but also reduces significantly the sensitivity of UWB systems in short-range indoor wireless communications
Cooperative Precoding with Limited Feedback for MIMO Interference Channels
Multi-antenna precoding effectively mitigates the interference in wireless
networks. However, the resultant performance gains can be significantly
compromised in practice if the precoder design fails to account for the
inaccuracy in the channel state information (CSI) feedback. This paper
addresses this issue by considering finite-rate CSI feedback from receivers to
their interfering transmitters in the two-user multiple-input-multiple-output
(MIMO) interference channel, called cooperative feedback, and proposing a
systematic method for designing transceivers comprising linear precoders and
equalizers. Specifically, each precoder/equalizer is decomposed into inner and
outer components for nulling the cross-link interference and achieving array
gain, respectively. The inner precoders/equalizers are further optimized to
suppress the residual interference resulting from finite-rate cooperative
feedback. Further- more, the residual interference is regulated by additional
scalar cooperative feedback signals that are designed to control transmission
power using different criteria including fixed interference margin and maximum
sum throughput. Finally, the required number of cooperative precoder feedback
bits is derived for limiting the throughput loss due to precoder quantization.Comment: 23 pages; 5 figures; this work was presented in part at Asilomar 2011

Diversity in mobile communications for blind detection of block-coded modulations
Spatial, temporal, and frequency diversity structures are analyzed to address the blind equalization problem in the presence of time-variant frequency selective channels. The aim of the paper is to present equalization schemes useful in front of fast changing channel responses. The best solution is a deterministic blind criterion that allows direct channel equalization and symbol detection. The main contribution of this paper is to present deterministic blind equalization schemes in CDMA systems (frequency diversity) to reduce the impact of the time-variant frequency selective channel.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Classical and Bayesian Linear Data Estimators for Unique Word OFDM
Unique word - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) is a novel
OFDM signaling concept, where the guard interval is built of a deterministic
sequence - the so-called unique word - instead of the conventional random
cyclic prefix. In contrast to previous attempts with deterministic sequences in
the guard interval the addressed UW-OFDM signaling approach introduces
correlations between the subcarrier symbols, which can be exploited by the
receiver in order to improve the bit error ratio performance. In this paper we
develop several linear data estimators specifically designed for UW-OFDM, some
based on classical and some based on Bayesian estimation theory. Furthermore,
we derive complexity optimized versions of these estimators, and we study their
individual complex multiplication count in detail. Finally, we evaluate the
estimators' performance for the additive white Gaussian noise channel as well
as for selected indoor multipath channel scenarios.Comment: Preprint, 13 page
Adaptive Bayesian decision feedback equalizer for dispersive mobile radio channels
The paper investigates adaptive equalization of time dispersive mobile ratio fading channels and develops a robust high performance Bayesian decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The characteristics and implementation aspects of this Bayesian DFE are analyzed, and its performance is compared with those of the conventional symbol or fractional spaced DFE and the maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE). In terms of computational complexity, the adaptive Bayesian DFE is slightly more complex than the conventional DFE but is much simpler than the adaptive MLSE. In terms of error rate in symbol detection, the adaptive Bayesian DFE outperforms the conventional DFE dramatically. Moreover, for severely fading multipath channels, the adaptive MLSE exhibits significant degradation from the theoretical optimal performance and becomes inferior to the adaptive Bayesian DFE
Sum-Rate Maximization for Linearly Precoded Downlink Multiuser MISO Systems with Partial CSIT: A Rate-Splitting Approach
This paper considers the Sum-Rate (SR) maximization problem in downlink
MU-MISO systems under imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter
(CSIT). Contrary to existing works, we consider a rather unorthodox
transmission scheme. In particular, the message intended to one of the users is
split into two parts: a common part which can be recovered by all users, and a
private part recovered by the corresponding user. On the other hand, the rest
of users receive their information through private messages. This
Rate-Splitting (RS) approach was shown to boost the achievable Degrees of
Freedom (DoF) when CSIT errors decay with increased SNR. In this work, the RS
strategy is married with linear precoder design and optimization techniques to
achieve a maximized Ergodic SR (ESR) performance over the entire range of SNRs.
Precoders are designed based on partial CSIT knowledge by solving a stochastic
rate optimization problem using means of Sample Average Approximation (SAA)
coupled with the Weighted Minimum Mean Square Error (WMMSE) approach. Numerical
results show that in addition to the ESR gains, the benefits of RS also include
relaxed CSIT quality requirements and enhanced achievable rate regions compared
to conventional transmission with NoRS.Comment: accepted to IEEE Transactions on Communication
Low-complexity iterative frequency domain decision feedback equalization
Single-carrier transmission with frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) offers a viable design alternative to the classic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique. However, SC-FDE using a linear equalizer may suffer from serious performance deterioration for transmission over severely frequency-selective fading channels. An effective method of solving this problem is to introduce non-linear decision feedback equalization (DFE) to SC-FDE. In this contribution, a low complexity iterative decision feedback equalizer operating in the frequency domain of single-carrier systems is proposed. Based on the minimum mean square error criterion, a simplified parameter estimation method is introduced to calculate the coefficients of the feed-forward and feedback filters, which significantly reduces the implementation complexity of the equalizer. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed simplified design is similar to the traditional iterative block DFE under various multipath fading channels but it imposes a much lower complexity than the latter
