Self-tuning routine alarm analysis of vibration signals in steam turbine generators
This paper presents a self-tuning framework for knowledge-based diagnosis of routine alarms in steam turbine generators. The techniques provide a novel basis for initialising and updating time series feature extraction parameters used in the automated decision support of vibration events due to operational transients. The data-driven nature of the algorithms allows for machine specific characteristics of individual turbines to be learned and reasoned about. The paper provides a case study illustrating the routine alarm paradigm and the applicability of systems using such techniques
Natural Notation for the Domestic Internet of Things
This study explores the use of natural language to give instructions that
might be interpreted by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in a domestic `smart
home' environment. We start from the proposition that reminders can be
considered as a type of end-user programming, in which the executed actions
might be performed either by an automated agent or by the author of the
reminder. We conducted an experiment in which people wrote sticky notes
specifying future actions in their home. In different conditions, these notes
were addressed to themselves, to others, or to a computer agent. We analyse the
linguistic features and strategies that are used to achieve these tasks,
including the use of graphical resources as an informal visual language. The
findings provide a basis for design guidance related to end-user development
for the Internet of Things.Comment: Proceedings of the 5th International symposium on End-User

BCAS: A Web-enabled and GIS-based Decision Support System for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer
For decades, geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed but the precise determinants of such geographic differences in breast cancer development are unclear. Various statistical models have been proposed. Applications of these models, however, require that the data be assembled from a variety of sources, converted into the statistical modelsâ parameters and delivered effectively to researchers and policy makers. A web-enabled and GIS-based system can be developed to provide the needed functionality. This article overviews the conceptual web-enabled and GIS-based system (BCAS), illustrates the systemâs use in diagnosing and treating breast cancer and examines the potential benefits and implications for breast cancer research and practice
Hikester - the event management application
Today social networks and services are one of the most important part of our
everyday life. Most of the daily activities, such as communicating with
friends, reading news or dating is usually done using social networks. However,
there are activities for which social networks do not yet provide adequate
support. This paper focuses on event management and introduces "Hikester". The
main objective of this service is to provide users with the possibility to
create any event they desire and to invite other users. "Hikester" supports the
creation and management of events like attendance of football matches, quest
rooms, shared train rides or visit of museums in foreign countries. Here we
discuss the project architecture as well as the detailed implementation of the
system components: the recommender system, the spam recognition service and the
parameters optimizer
