    Distributed Detection and Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this article we consider the problems of distributed detection and estimation in wireless sensor networks. In the first part, we provide a general framework aimed to show how an efficient design of a sensor network requires a joint organization of in-network processing and communication. Then, we recall the basic features of consensus algorithm, which is a basic tool to reach globally optimal decisions through a distributed approach. The main part of the paper starts addressing the distributed estimation problem. We show first an entirely decentralized approach, where observations and estimations are performed without the intervention of a fusion center. Then, we consider the case where the estimation is performed at a fusion center, showing how to allocate quantization bits and transmit powers in the links between the nodes and the fusion center, in order to accommodate the requirement on the maximum estimation variance, under a constraint on the global transmit power. We extend the approach to the detection problem. Also in this case, we consider the distributed approach, where every node can achieve a globally optimal decision, and the case where the decision is taken at a central node. In the latter case, we show how to allocate coding bits and transmit power in order to maximize the detection probability, under constraints on the false alarm rate and the global transmit power. Then, we generalize consensus algorithms illustrating a distributed procedure that converges to the projection of the observation vector onto a signal subspace. We then address the issue of energy consumption in sensor networks, thus showing how to optimize the network topology in order to minimize the energy necessary to achieve a global consensus. Finally, we address the problem of matching the topology of the network to the graph describing the statistical dependencies among the observed variables.Comment: 92 pages, 24 figures.     Innovation in manufacturing through digital technologies and applications: Thoughts and Reflections on Industry 4.0

    The rapid pace of developments in digital technologies offers many opportunities to increase the efficiency, flexibility and sophistication of manufacturing processes; including the potential for easier customisation, lower volumes and rapid changeover of products within the same manufacturing cell or line. A number of initiatives on this theme have been proposed around the world to support national industries under names such as Industry 4.0 (Industrie 4.0 in Germany, Made-in-China in China and Made Smarter in the UK). This book presents an overview of the state of art and upcoming developments in digital technologies pertaining to manufacturing. The starting point is an introduction on Industry 4.0 and its potential for enhancing the manufacturing process. Later on moving to the design of smart (that is digitally driven) business processes which are going to rely on sensing of all relevant parameters, gathering, storing and processing the data from these sensors, using computing power and intelligence at the most appropriate points in the digital workflow including application of edge computing and parallel processing. A key component of this workflow is the application of Artificial Intelligence and particularly techniques in Machine Learning to derive actionable information from this data; be it real-time automated responses such as actuating transducers or informing human operators to follow specified standard operating procedures or providing management data for operational and strategic planning. Further consideration also needs to be given to the properties and behaviours of particular machines that are controlled and materials that are transformed during the manufacturing process and this is sometimes referred to as Operational Technology (OT) as opposed to IT. The digital capture of these properties and behaviours can then be used to define so-called Cyber Physical Systems. Given the power of these digital technologies it is of paramount importance that they operate safely and are not vulnerable to malicious interference. Industry 4.0 brings unprecedented cybersecurity challenges to manufacturing and the overall industrial sector and the case is made here that new codes of practice are needed for the combined Information Technology and Operational Technology worlds, but with a framework that should be native to Industry 4.0. Current computing technologies are also able to go in other directions than supporting the digital ‘sense to action’ process described above. One of these is to use digital technologies to enhance the ability of the human operators who are still essential within the manufacturing process. One such technology, that has recently become accessible for widespread adoption, is Augmented Reality, providing operators with real-time additional information in situ with the machines that they interact with in their workspace in a hands-free mode. Finally, two linked chapters discuss the specific application of digital technologies to High Pressure Die Casting (HDPC) of Magnesium components. Optimizing the HPDC process is a key task for increasing productivity and reducing defective parts and the first chapter provides an overview of the HPDC process with attention to the most common defects and their sources. It does this by first looking at real-time process control mechanisms, understanding the various process variables and assessing their impact on the end product quality. This understanding drives the choice of sensing methods and the associated smart digital workflow to allow real-time control and mitigation of variation in the identified variables. Also, data from this workflow can be captured and used for the design of optimised dies and associated processes

    Structural health monitoring of bridges using wireless sensor networks

    Structural Health Monitoring, damage detection and localization of bridges using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are studied in this thesis. The continuous monitoring of bridges to detect damage is a very useful tools for preventing unnecessary costly and emergent maintenance. The optimal design aims to maximize the lifetime of the system, the accuracy of the sensed data, and the system reliability, and to minimize the system cost and complexity Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is carried out using LUSAS Bridge Plus software to determine sensor locations and measurement types and effectively minimize the number of sensors, data for transmission, and volume of data for processing. In order to verify the computer simulation outputs and evaluate the proposed optimal design and algorithms, a WSN system mounted on a simple reinforced concrete frame model is employed in the lab. A series of tests are carried out on the reinforced concrete frame mounted on the shaking table in order to simulate the existing extreme loading condition. Experimental methods which are based on modal analysis under ambient vibrational excitation are often employed to detect structural damages of mechanical systems, many of such frequency domain methods as first step use a Fast Fourier Transform estimate of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) associated with the response of the system. In this study it is also shown that higher order statistical estimators such as Spectral Kurtosis (SK) and Sample to Model Ratio (SMR) may be successfully employed to more reliably discriminate the response of the system against the ambient noise and better identify and separate contributions from closely spaced individual modes. Subsequently, the identified modal parameters are used for damage detection and Structural Health Monitoring. To evaluate the preliminary results of the project\u27s prototype and quantify the current bridge response as well as demonstrate the ability of the SHM system to successfully perform on a bridge, the deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks in an existing highway bridge in Qatar is implemented. The proposed technique will eventually be applied to the new stadium that State of Qatar will build in preparation for the 2022 World Cup. This monitoring system will help permanently record the vibration levels reached in all substructures during each event to evaluate the actual health state of the stadiums. This offers the opportunity to detect potentially dangerous situations before they become critical

    Foreword: Congratulation to IGS on the continuous effort to publish the 11th issue of the Doctoral Research Abstracts which highlights the research in various disciplines from science and technology, business and administration to social science and humanities. This research abstract issue features the abstracts from 91 PhD doctorates who will receive their scrolls in this 86th UiTM momentous convocation ceremony. This is a special year for the Institute of Graduate Studies where we are celebrating our 20th anniversary. The 20th anniversary is celebrated with pride with an increase in the number of PhD graduates. In this 86th convocation, the number of PhD graduates has increased by 30% compared to the previous convocation. Each research produces an innovation and this year, 91 research innovations have been successfully recognized to have made contributions to the body of knowledge. This is in line with this year UiTM theme that is “Inovasi Melonjak Persaingan Global (Innovation Soars Global Competition)”. Embarking on PhD research may not have been an easy decision for many of you. It often comes at a point in life when the decision to further one’s studies is challenged by the comfort of status quo. I would like it to be known that you have most certainly done UiTM proud by journeying through the scholarly world with its endless challenges and obstacles, and by persevering right till the very end.     Optimization based energy-efficient control inmobile communication networks

    In this work we consider how best to control mobility and transmission for the purpose of datatransfer and aggregation in a network of mobile autonomous agents. In particular we considernetworks containing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We first consider a single link betweena mobile transmitter-receiver pair, and show that the total amount of transmittable data isbounded. For certain special, but not overly restrictive cases, we can determine closed-formexpressions for this bound, as a function of relevant mobility and communication parameters.We then use nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to jointly optimize mobility and trans-mission schemes of all networked nodes for the purpose of minimizing the energy expenditureof the network. This yields a novel nonlinear optimal control problem for arbitrary networksof autonomous agents, which we solve with state-of-the-art nonlinear solvers. Numerical re-sults demonstrate increased network capacity and significant communication energy savingscompared to more na ̈ıve policies. All energy expenditure of an autonomous agent is due tocommunication, computation, or mobility and the actual computation of the NMPC solutionmay be a significant cost in both time and computational resources. Furthermore, frequentbroadcasting of control policies throughout the network can require significant transmit andreceive energies. Motivated by this, we develop an event-triggering scheme which accounts forthe accuracy of the optimal control solution, and provides guarantees of the minimum timebetween successive control updates. Solution accuracy should be accounted for in any triggeredNMPC scheme where the system may be run in open loop for extended times based on pos-sibly inaccurate state predictions. We use this analysis to trade-off the cost of updating ourtransmission and locomotion policies, with the frequency by which they must be updated. Thisgives a method to trade-off the computation, communication and mobility related energies ofthe mobile autonomous network.Open Acces

    Taming and Leveraging Directionality and Blockage in Millimeter Wave Communications

    To cope with the challenge for high-rate data transmission, Millimeter Wave(mmWave) is one potential solution. The short wavelength unlatched the era of directional mobile communication. The semi-optical communication requires revolutionary thinking. To assist the research and evaluate various algorithms, we build a motion-sensitive mmWave testbed with two degrees of freedom for environmental sensing and general wireless communication.The first part of this thesis contains two approaches to maintain the connection in mmWave mobile communication. The first one seeks to solve the beam tracking problem using motion sensor within the mobile device. A tracking algorithm is given and integrated into the tracking protocol. Detailed experiments and numerical simulations compared several compensation schemes with optical benchmark and demonstrated the efficiency of overhead reduction. The second strategy attempts to mitigate intermittent connections during roaming is multi-connectivity. Taking advantage of properties of rateless erasure code, a fountain code type multi-connectivity mechanism is proposed to increase the link reliability with simplified backhaul mechanism. The simulation demonstrates the efficiency and robustness of our system design with a multi-link channel record.The second topic in this thesis explores various techniques in blockage mitigation. A fast hear-beat like channel with heavy blockage loss is identified in the mmWave Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communication experiment due to the propeller blockage. These blockage patterns are detected through Holm\u27s procedure as a problem of multi-time series edge detection. To reduce the blockage effect, an adaptive modulation and coding scheme is designed. The simulation results show that it could greatly improve the throughput given appropriately predicted patterns. The last but not the least, the blockage of directional communication also appears as a blessing because the geometrical information and blockage event of ancillary signal paths can be utilized to predict the blockage timing for the current transmission path. A geometrical model and prediction algorithm are derived to resolve the blockage time and initiate active handovers. An experiment provides solid proof of multi-paths properties and the numeral simulation demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed algorithm
