    GTA: Groupware task analysis Modeling complexity

    The task analysis methods discussed in this presentation stem from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ethnography (as applied for the design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work CSCW), different disciplines that often are considered conflicting approaches when applied to the same design problems. Both approaches have their strength and weakness, and an integration of them does add value to the early stages of design of cooperation technology. In order to develop an integrated method for groupware task analysis (GTA) a conceptual framework is presented that allows a systematic perspective on complex work phenomena. The framework features a triple focus, considering (a) people, (b) work, and (c) the situation. Integrating various task-modeling approaches requires vehicles for making design information explicit, for which an object oriented formalism will be suggested. GTA consists of a method and framework that have been developed during practical design exercises. Examples from some of these cases will illustrate our approach

    Accepting Hybrid Networks of Evolutionary Processors with Special Topologies and Small Communication

    Starting from the fact that complete Accepting Hybrid Networks of Evolutionary Processors allow much communication between the nodes and are far from network structures used in practice, we propose in this paper three network topologies that restrict the communication: star networks, ring networks, and grid networks. We show that ring-AHNEPs can simulate 2-tag systems, thus we deduce the existence of a universal ring-AHNEP. For star networks or grid networks, we show a more general result; that is, each recursively enumerable language can be accepted efficiently by a star- or grid-AHNEP. We also present bounds for the size of these star and grid networks. As a consequence we get that each recursively enumerable can be accepted by networks with at most 13 communication channels and by networks where each node communicates with at most three other nodes.Comment: In Proceedings DCFS 2010, arXiv:1008.127

    A Polynomial Time Algorithm for Deciding Branching Bisimilarity on Totally Normed BPA

    Strong bisimilarity on normed BPA is polynomial-time decidable, while weak bisimilarity on totally normed BPA is NP-hard. It is natural to ask where the computational complexity of branching bisimilarity on totally normed BPA lies. This paper confirms that this problem is polynomial-time decidable. To our knowledge, in the presence of silent transitions, this is the first bisimilarity checking algorithm on infinite state systems which runs in polynomial time. This result spots an instance in which branching bisimilarity and weak bisimilarity are both decidable but lie in different complexity classes (unless NP=P), which is not known before. The algorithm takes the partition refinement approach and the final implementation can be thought of as a generalization of the previous algorithm of Czerwi\'{n}ski and Lasota. However, unexpectedly, the correctness of the algorithm cannot be directly generalized from previous works, and the correctness proof turns out to be subtle. The proof depends on the existence of a carefully defined refinement operation fitted for our algorithm and the proposal of elaborately developed techniques, which are quite different from previous works.Comment: 32 page
