    Video-on-Demand over Internet: a survey of existing systems and solutions

    Video-on-Demand is a service where movies are delivered to distributed users with low delay and free interactivity. The traditional client/server architecture experiences scalability issues to provide video streaming services, so there have been many proposals of systems, mostly based on a peer-to-peer or on a hybrid server/peer-to-peer solution, to solve this issue. This work presents a survey of the currently existing or proposed systems and solutions, based upon a subset of representative systems, and defines selection criteria allowing to classify these systems. These criteria are based on common questions such as, for example, is it video-on-demand or live streaming, is the architecture based on content delivery network, peer-to-peer or both, is the delivery overlay tree-based or mesh-based, is the system push-based or pull-based, single-stream or multi-streams, does it use data coding, and how do the clients choose their peers. Representative systems are briefly described to give a summarized overview of the proposed solutions, and four ones are analyzed in details.     Design and implementation of simulation tools, protocols and architectures to support service platforms on vehicular networks

    Tesis por compendioProducts related with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are becoming a reality on our roads. All car manufacturers are starting to include Internet access in their vehicles and to integrate smartphones directly from the dashboard, but more and more services will be introduced in the near future. Connectivity through "vehicular networks" will become a cornerstone of every new proposal, and offering an adequate quality of service is obviously desirable. However, a lot of work is needed for vehicular networks to offer performances similar to those of the wired networks. Vehicular networks can be characterized by two main features: high variability due to mobility levels that can reach up to 250 kilometers per hour, and heterogeneity, being that various competing versions from different vendors have and will be released. Therefore, to make the deployment of efficient services possible, an extensive study must be carried out and adequate tools must be proposed and developed. This PhD thesis addresses the service deployment problem in these networks at three different levels: (i) the physical and link layer, showing an exhaustive analysis of the physical channel and models; (ii) the network layer, proposing a forwarding protocol for IP packets; and (iii) the transport layer, where protocols are proposed to improve data delivery. First of all, the two main wireless technologies used in vehicular networks where studied and modeled, namely the 802.11 family of standards, particularly 802.11p, and the cellular networks focusing on LTE. Since 802.11p is a quite mature standard, we defined (i) a propagation and attenuation model capable of replicating the transmission range and the fading behavior of real 802.11p devices, both in line-of-sight conditions and when obstructed by small obstacles, and (ii) a visibility model able to deal with large obstacles, such as buildings and houses, in a realistic manner. Additionally, we proposed a model based on high-level performance indicators (bandwidth and delay) for LTE, which makes application validation and evaluation easier. At the network layer, a hybrid protocol called AVE is proposed for packet forwarding by switching among a set of standard routing strategies. Depending on the specific scenario, AVE selects one out of four different routing solutions: a) two-hop direct delivery, b) Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO), c) greedy georouting, and d) store-carry-and-forward technique, to dynamically adapt its behavior to the specific situation. At the transport layer, we proposed a content delivery protocol for reliable and bidirectional unicast communication in lossy links that improves content delivery in situations where the wireless network is the bottleneck. It has been designed, validated, optimized, and its performance has been analyzed in terms of throughput and resource efficiency. Finally, at system level, we propose an edge-assisted computing model that allows reducing the response latency of several queries by placing a computing unit at the network edge. This way, traffic traversal through the Internet is avoided when not needed. This scheme could be used in both 802.11p and cellular networks, and in this thesis we decided to focus on its evaluation using LTE networks. The platform presented in this thesis combines all the individual efforts to create a single efficient platform. This new environment could be used by any provider to improve the quality of the user experience obtainable through the proposed vehicular network-based services.Los productos relacionados con los Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS) se están transformando en una realidad en nuestras carreteras. Todos los fabricantes de coches comienzan a incluir acceso a internet en sus vehículos y a facilitar su integración con los teléfonos móviles, pero más y más servicios se introducirán en el futuro. La conectividad usando las "redes vehiculares" se convertirá en la piedra angular de cada nueva propuesta, y ofrecer una calidad de servicio adecuada será, obviamente, deseable. Sin embargo, se necesita una gran cantidad de trabajo para que las redes vehiculares ofrezcan un rendimiento similar al de las redes cableadas. Las redes vehiculares quedan definidas por sus dos características básicas: alto dinamismo, pues los nodos pueden alcanzar una velocidad relativa de más de 250 km/h; y heterogeneidad, por la gran cantidad de propuestas diferentes que los fabricantes están lanzando al mercado. Por ello, para hacer posible el despliegue de servicios sobre ellas, se impone la necesidad de hacer un estudio en profundidad de este entorno, y deben de proponerse y desarrollarse las herramientas adecuadas. Esta tesis ataca la problemática del despliegue de servicios en estas redes a tres niveles diferentes: (i) el nivel físico y de enlace, mostrando varios análisis en profundidad del medio físico y modelos derivados para su simulación; (ii) el nivel de red, proponiendo un protocolo de difusión de la información para los paquetes IP; y (iii) el nivel de transporte, donde otros protocolos son propuestos para mejorar el rendimiento del transporte de datos. En primer lugar, se han estudiado y modelado las dos principales tecnologías inalámbricas que se utilizan para la comunicación en redes vehiculares, la rama de estándares 802.11, en concreto 802.11p; y la comunicación celular, en particular LTE. Dado que el estándar 802.11p es un estándar bastante maduro, nos centramos en crear (i) un modelo de propagación y atenuación capaz de replicar el rango de transmisión de dispositivos 802.11p reales, en condiciones de visión directa y obstrucción por pequeños obstáculos, y (ii) un modelo de visibilidad capaz de simular el efecto de grandes obstáculos, como son los edifcios, de una manera realista. Además, proponemos un modelo basado en indicadores de rendimiento de alto nivel (ancho de banda y retardo) para LTE, que facilita la validación y evaluación de aplicaciones. En el plano de red, se propone un protocolo híbrido, llamado AVE, para el encaminamiento y reenvío de paquetes usando un conjunto de estrategias estándar de enrutamiento. Dependiendo del escenario, AVE elige entre cuatro estrategias diferentes: a) entrega directa a dos saltos, b) Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO) c) georouting voraz, y d) una técnica store-carry-and- forward, para adaptar su comportamiento dinámicamente a cada situación. En el plano de transporte, se propone un protocolo bidireccional de distribución de contenidos en canales con pérdidas que mejora la entrega de contenidos en situaciones en las que la red es un cuello de botella, como las redes inalámbricas. Ha sido diseñado, validado, optimizado, y su rendimiento ha sido analizado en términos de productividad y eficiencia en la utilización de recursos. Finalmente, a nivel de sistema, proponemos un modelo de computación asistida que permite reducir la latencia en la respuesta a muchas consultas colocando una unidad de computación en el borde de la red, i.e., la red de acceso. Este esquema podría ser usado en redes basadas en 802.11p y en redes celulares, si bien en esta tesis decidimos centrarnos en su evaluación usando redes LTE. La plataforma presentada en esta tesis combina todos los esfuerzos individuales para crear una plataforma única y eficiente. Este nuevo entorno puede ser usado por cualquier proveedor para mejorar la calidad de la experiencia de usuario en los servicios desplegados sobre redes vehiculares.Els productes relacionats amb els sistemes intel · ligents de transport (ITS) s'estan transformant en una realitat en les nostres carreteres. Tots els fabri- cants de cotxes comencen a incloure accés a internet en els vehicles i a facilitar- ne la integració amb els telèfons mòbils, però en el futur més i més serveis s'hi introduiran. La connectivitat usant les xarxes vehicular esdevindrà la pedra angular de cada nova proposta, i oferir una qualitat de servei adequada serà, òbviament, desitjable. No obstant això, es necessita una gran quantitat de treball perquè les xarxes vehiculars oferisquen un rendiment similar al de les xarxes cablejades. Les xarxes vehiculars queden definides per dues característiques bàsiques: alt dinamisme, ja que els nodes poden arribar a una velocitat relativa de més de 250 km/h; i heterogeneïtat, per la gran quantitat de propostes diferents que els fabricants estan llançant al mercat. Per això, per a fer possible el desplegament de serveis sobre aquestes xarxes, s'imposa la necessitat de fer un estudi en profunditat d'aquest entorn, i cal proposar i desenvolupar les eines adequades. Aquesta tesi ataca la problemàtica del desplegament de serveis en aquestes xarxes a tres nivells diferents: (i) el nivell físic i d'enllaç , mostrant diverses anàlisis en profunditat del medi físic i models derivats per simular-lo; (ii) el nivell de xarxa, proposant un protocol de difusió de la informació per als paquets IP; i (iii) el nivell de transport, on es proposen altres protocols per a millorar el rendiment del transport de dades. En primer lloc, s'han estudiat i modelat les dues principals tecnologies sense fils que s'utilitzen per a la comunicació en xarxes vehiculars, la branca d'estàndards 802.11, en concret 802.11p; i la comunicació cel · lular, en partic- ular LTE.     Descoberta de recursos para sistemas de escala arbitrarias

    Doutoramento em InformáticaTecnologias de Computação Distribuída em larga escala tais como Cloud, Grid, Cluster e Supercomputadores HPC estão a evoluir juntamente com a emergência revolucionária de modelos de múltiplos núcleos (por exemplo: GPU, CPUs num único die, Supercomputadores em single die, Supercomputadores em chip, etc) e avanços significativos em redes e soluções de interligação. No futuro, nós de computação com milhares de núcleos podem ser ligados entre si para formar uma única unidade de computação transparente que esconde das aplicações a complexidade e a natureza distribuída desses sistemas com múltiplos núcleos. A fim de beneficiar de forma eficiente de todos os potenciais recursos nesses ambientes de computação em grande escala com múltiplos núcleos ativos, a descoberta de recursos é um elemento crucial para explorar ao máximo as capacidade de todos os recursos heterogéneos distribuídos, através do reconhecimento preciso e localização desses recursos no sistema. A descoberta eficiente e escalável de recursos ´e um desafio para tais sistemas futuros, onde os recursos e as infira-estruturas de computação e comunicação subjacentes são altamente dinâmicas, hierarquizadas e heterogéneas. Nesta tese, investigamos o problema da descoberta de recursos no que diz respeito aos requisitos gerais da escalabilidade arbitrária de ambientes de computação futuros com múltiplos núcleos ativos. A principal contribuição desta tese ´e a proposta de uma entidade de descoberta de recursos adaptativa híbrida (Hybrid Adaptive Resource Discovery - HARD), uma abordagem de descoberta de recursos eficiente e altamente escalável, construída sobre uma sobreposição hierárquica virtual baseada na auto-organizaçãoo e auto-adaptação de recursos de processamento no sistema, onde os recursos computacionais são organizados em hierarquias distribuídas de acordo com uma proposta de modelo de descriçãoo de recursos multi-camadas hierárquicas. Operacionalmente, em cada camada, que consiste numa arquitetura ponto-a-ponto de módulos que, interagindo uns com os outros, fornecem uma visão global da disponibilidade de recursos num ambiente distribuído grande, dinâmico e heterogéneo. O modelo de descoberta de recursos proposto fornece a adaptabilidade e flexibilidade para executar consultas complexas através do apoio a um conjunto de características significativas (tais como multi-dimensional, variedade e consulta agregada) apoiadas por uma correspondência exata e parcial, tanto para o conteúdo de objetos estéticos e dinâmicos. Simulações mostram que o HARD pode ser aplicado a escalas arbitrárias de dinamismo, tanto em termos de complexidade como de escala, posicionando esta proposta como uma arquitetura adequada para sistemas futuros de múltiplos núcleos. Também contribuímos com a proposta de um regime de gestão eficiente dos recursos para sistemas futuros que podem utilizar recursos distribuíos de forma eficiente e de uma forma totalmente descentralizada. Além disso, aproveitando componentes de descoberta (RR-RPs) permite que a nossa plataforma de gestão de recursos encontre e aloque dinamicamente recursos disponíeis que garantam os parâmetros de QoS pedidos.Large scale distributed computing technologies such as Cloud, Grid, Cluster and HPC supercomputers are progressing along with the revolutionary emergence of many-core designs (e.g. GPU, CPUs on single die, supercomputers on chip, etc.) and significant advances in networking and interconnect solutions. In future, computing nodes with thousands of cores may be connected together to form a single transparent computing unit which hides from applications the complexity and distributed nature of these many core systems. In order to efficiently benefit from all the potential resources in such large scale many-core-enabled computing environments, resource discovery is the vital building block to maximally exploit the capabilities of all distributed heterogeneous resources through precisely recognizing and locating those resources in the system. The efficient and scalable resource discovery is challenging for such future systems where the resources and the underlying computation and communication infrastructures are highly-dynamic, highly-hierarchical and highly-heterogeneous. In this thesis, we investigate the problem of resource discovery with respect to the general requirements of arbitrary scale future many-core-enabled computing environments. The main contribution of this thesis is to propose Hybrid Adaptive Resource Discovery (HARD), a novel efficient and highly scalable resource-discovery approach which is built upon a virtual hierarchical overlay based on self-organization and self-adaptation of processing resources in the system, where the computing resources are organized into distributed hierarchies according to a proposed hierarchical multi-layered resource description model. Operationally, at each layer, it consists of a peer-to-peer architecture of modules that, by interacting with each other, provide a global view of the resource availability in a large, dynamic and heterogeneous distributed environment. The proposed resource discovery model provides the adaptability and flexibility to perform complex querying by supporting a set of significant querying features (such as multi-dimensional, range and aggregate querying) while supporting exact and partial matching, both for static and dynamic object contents. The simulation shows that HARD can be applied to arbitrary scales of dynamicity, both in terms of complexity and of scale, positioning this proposal as a proper architecture for future many-core systems. We also contributed to propose a novel resource management scheme for future systems which efficiently can utilize distributed resources in a fully decentralized fashion. Moreover, leveraging discovery components (RR-RPs) enables our resource management platform to dynamically find and allocate available resources that guarantee the QoS parameters on demand

    Resource discovery for distributed computing systems: A comprehensive survey

    Large-scale distributed computing environments provide a vast amount of heterogeneous computing resources from different sources for resource sharing and distributed computing. Discovering appropriate resources in such environments is a challenge which involves several different subjects. In this paper, we provide an investigation on the current state of resource discovery protocols, mechanisms, and platforms for large-scale distributed environments, focusing on the design aspects. We classify all related aspects, general steps, and requirements to construct a novel resource discovery solution in three categories consisting of structures, methods, and issues. Accordingly, we review the literature, analyzing various aspects for each category

    Performance Evaluation of TCP Multihoming for IPV6 Anycast Networks and Proxy Placement

    In this thesis, the impact of multihomed clients and multihomed proxy servers on the performance of modern networks is investigated. The network model used in our investigation integrates three main components: the new one-to-any Anycast communication paradigm that facilitates server replication, the next generation Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) that offers larger address space for packet switched networks, and the emerging multihoming trend of connecting devices and smart phones to more than one Internet service provider thereby acquiring more than one IP address. The design of a previously proposed Proxy IP Anycast service is modified to integrate user device multihoming and Ipv6 routing. The impact of user device multihoming (single-homed, dual-homed, and triple-homed) on network performance is extensively analyzed using realistic network topologies and different traffic scenarios of client-server TCP flows. Network throughput, packet latency delay and packet loss rate are the three performance metrics used in our analysis. Performance comparisons between the Anycast Proxy service and the native IP Anycast protocol are presented. The number of Anycast proxy servers and their placement are studied. Five placement methods have been implemented and evaluated including random placement, highest traffic placement, highest number of active interface placements, K-DS placement and a new hybrid placement method. The work presented in this thesis provides new insight into the performance of some new emerging communication paradigms and how to improve their design. Although the work has been limited to investigating Anycast proxy servers, the results can be beneficial and applicable to other types of overlay proxy services such as multicast proxies

    Efficient network camouflaging in wireless networks

    Camouflaging is about making something invisible or less visible. Network camouflaging is about hiding certain traffic information (e.g. traffic pattern, traffic flow identity, etc.) from internal and external eavesdroppers such that important information cannot be deduced from it for malicious use. It is one of the most challenging security requirements to meet in computer networks. Existing camouflaging techniques such as traffic padding, MIX-net, etc., incur significant performance degradation when protected networks are wireless networks, such as sensor networks and mobile ad hoc networks. The reason is that wireless networks are typically subject to resource constraints (e.g. bandwidth, power supply) and possess some unique characteristics (e.g. broadcast, node mobility) that traditional wired networks do not possess. This necessitates developing new techniques that take account of properties of wireless networks and are able to achieve a good balance between performance and security. In this three-part dissertation we investigate techniques for providing network camouflaging services in wireless networks. In the first part, we address a specific problem in a hierarchical multi-task sensor network, i.e. hiding the links between observable traffic patterns and user interests. To solve the problem, a temporally constant traffic pattern, called cover traffic pattern, is needed. We describe two traf- fic padding schemes that implement the cover traffic pattern and provide algorithms for achieving the optimal energy efficiencies with each scheme. In the second part, we explore the design of a MIX-net based anonymity system in mobile ad hoc networks. The objective is to hide the source-destination relationship with respect to each connection. We survey existing MIX route determination algorithms that do not account for dynamic network topology changes, which may result in high packet loss rate and large packet latency. We then introduce adaptive algorithms to overcome this problem. In the third part, we explore the notion of providing anonymity support at MAC layer in wireless networks, which employs the broadcast property of wireless transmission. We design an IEEE 802.11-compliant MAC protocol that provides receiver anonymity for unicast frames and offers better reliability than pure broadcast protocol

    PariPari è una piattaforma P2P multifunzionale ed estensibile. Questa tesi descrive come PariConnectivity, il modulo di PariPari che gestisce le comunicazioni di rete, sia stato completamente riprogettato e ottimizzato: lo sviluppo di un nuovo insieme di API, fondate sulle librerie Java NIO, ha fornito un nuovo livello di astrazione per l'accesso alla rete in PariPari, arricchito da un sistema efficiente di I/O asincrono. Su questa base è stato poi possibile realizzare nuovi servizi quali limitazione di banda, NAT Traversal, Multicast e Anonimato. PariPari is a multi-functional and extensible P2P platform. This thesis illustrates how PariConnectivity --the module of PariPari which provides access to network resources -- has been reengineered and optimized. Through the development of a new set of APIs, built on the Java NIO libraries, we have created a new network abstraction layer, providing easiness-to-use and efficiency thanks to the introduction of advanced features as, for instance, the asynchronous I/O. On this basis, we have introduced and enhanced some crucial services like bandwidth limitation, NAT Traversal, Multicast and Anonymit

    A framework for the dynamic management of Peer-to-Peer overlays

    Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications have been associated with inefficient operation, interference with other network services and large operational costs for network providers. This thesis presents a framework which can help ISPs address these issues by means of intelligent management of peer behaviour. The proposed approach involves limited control of P2P overlays without interfering with the fundamental characteristics of peer autonomy and decentralised operation. At the core of the management framework lays the Active Virtual Peer (AVP). Essentially intelligent peers operated by the network providers, the AVPs interact with the overlay from within, minimising redundant or inefficient traffic, enhancing overlay stability and facilitating the efficient and balanced use of available peer and network resources. They offer an “insider‟s” view of the overlay and permit the management of P2P functions in a compatible and non-intrusive manner. AVPs can support multiple P2P protocols and coordinate to perform functions collectively. To account for the multi-faceted nature of P2P applications and allow the incorporation of modern techniques and protocols as they appear, the framework is based on a modular architecture. Core modules for overlay control and transit traffic minimisation are presented. Towards the latter, a number of suitable P2P content caching strategies are proposed. Using a purpose-built P2P network simulator and small-scale experiments, it is demonstrated that the introduction of AVPs inside the network can significantly reduce inter-AS traffic, minimise costly multi-hop flows, increase overlay stability and load-balancing and offer improved peer transfer performance
