    On surface tension modelling using the level set method

    The paper describes and compares the performance of two options for numerically representing the surface tension force in combination with the level set interface-tracking method. In both models, the surface tension is represented as a body force, concentrated near the interface, but the technical implementation is different: the first model is based on a traditional level set approach in which the force is distributed in a band around the interface using a regularized delta function, whereas in the second, the force is partly distributed in a band around the interface and partly localized to the actual computational cells containing the interface. A comparative Study, involving analysis of several two-phase flows with moving interfaces, shows that in general the two surface tension models produce results of similar accuracy. However, in the particular case of merging and pinching-off of interfaces, the traditional level set model of surface tension produces an error that results in non-converging solutions for film-like interfaces (i.e. ones involving large contact areas). In contrast, the second model, based on the localized representation of the surface tension force, displays consistent first-order convergence

    Liquid simulation with mesh-based surface tracking

    Animating detailed liquid surfaces has always been a challenge for computer graphics researchers and visual effects artists. Over the past few years, researchers in this field have focused on mesh-based surface tracking to synthesize extremely detailed liquid surfaces as efficiently as possible. This course provides a solid understanding of the steps required to create a fluid simulator with a mesh-based liquid surface. The course begins with an overview of several existing liquid-surface-tracking techniques and the pros and cons of each method. Then it explains how to embed a triangle mesh into a finite-difference-based fluid simulator and describes several methods for allowing the liquid surface to merge together or break apart. The final section showcases the benefits and further applications of a mesh-based liquid surface, highlighting state-of-the-art methods for tracking colors and textures, maintaining liquid volume, preserving small surface features, and simulating realistic surface-tension waves

    On boundary condition capturing for multiphase interfaces

    This paper begins with an overview of the boundary condition capturing approach to solving problems with interfaces. Although, the authors ’ original motivation was to extend the ghost fluid method from compressible to incompressible flow, the elliptic nature of incompressible flow quickly quenched the idea that ghost cells could be defined and used in the usual manner. Instead the boundary conditions had to be implicitly captured by the matrix formulation itself, leading to the novel approach. We first review the work on the variable coefficient Poisson equation, noting that the simplicity of the method allowed for an elegant convergence proof. Simplicity and robustness also allowed for a quick extension to threedimensional two-phase incompressible flows including the effects of viscosity and surface tension, which is discussed subsequently. The method has enjoyed popularity in both computational physics and computer graphics, and we show some comparisons with the traditional delta function approach for the visual simulation of bubbles. Finally, we discuss extensions to problems where the velocity is discontinuous as well, as is the case for premixed flames, and show an example of multiple interacting liquids that includes all of the aforementioned phenomena.
