In this paper, we describe our experiments for both the News Story Segmentation task and Interactive Search task for
TRECVID 2003. Our News Story Segmentation task involved the use of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) to combine evidence from audio-visual analysis tools in order to generate a listing of news stories from a given news programme. Our
Search task experiment compared a video retrieval system based on text, image and relevance feedback with a text-only
video retrieval system in order to identify which was more effective. In order to do so we developed two variations of our FĂschlĂĄr video retrieval system and conducted user testing in a controlled lab environment. In this paper we outline our work on both of these two tasks
Exploring aspects of scientific publishing in astrophysics and cosmology: the views of scientists
Scientists in astrophysics and cosmology make much use of the arXiv repository. Concerns raised by scientists in those fields about publication costs and delays, and the transparency and validity of the peer review process, raised questions about levels of satisfaction with existing publishing models. This paper discusses the results from a community survey in the fields of astrophysics and cosmology, conducted as part of an investigation into the feasibility of an "overlay journal" model in these disciplines. Six hundred and eighty three (683) researchers provided information about their academic/research background, their research practices, and their attitudes, both as producers and consumers of information, to the traditional journal publishing system, and gave their reaction to the overlay publication model. The survey results indicate that scientists in these disciplines are, in general, favourably disposed towards new publishing models, although some important caveats and concerns, particularly regarding quality, were highlighted
User evaluation outside the lab: the trial of FĂschlĂĄr-News
A user study of FĂschlĂĄr-News system was conducted in Spring 2004 with 16 users, each user using the system for a 1-month period. FĂschlĂĄr-News is an experimental online news archive that incorporates various automatic content-based video indexing techniques and a news story recommender algorithm to process and index the daily 9 oâclock broadcast news from TV and allows its users to browse, search, be recommended, and play news stories on a conventional web browser. Pre and post-trial questionnaires, interaction logging and incident diary methods collected both qualitative and quantitative usage data during the trial period. While the details of the findings from this evaluation is reported elsewhere, in this paper we report the details of the methodology taken and our experience of conducting this evaluation
Info Navigator: A visualization tool for document searching and browsing
In this paper we investigate the retrieval performance of monophonic and polyphonic queries made on a polyphonic music database. We extend the n-gram approach for full-music indexing of monophonic music data to polyphonic music using both rhythm and pitch information. We define an experimental framework for a comparative and fault-tolerance study of various n-gramming strategies and encoding levels. For monophonic queries, we focus in particular on query-by-humming systems, and for polyphonic queries on query-by-example. Error models addressed in several studies are surveyed for the fault-tolerance study. Our experiments show that different n-gramming strategies and encoding precision differ widely in their effectiveness. Interactive Search and Exploration in Online Discussion Forums Using Multimodal Embeddings
In this paper we present a novel interactive multimodal learning system,
which facilitates search and exploration in large networks of social multimedia
users. It allows the analyst to identify and select users of interest, and to
find similar users in an interactive learning setting. Our approach is based on
novel multimodal representations of users, words and concepts, which we
simultaneously learn by deploying a general-purpose neural embedding model. We
show these representations to be useful not only for categorizing users, but
also for automatically generating user and community profiles. Inspired by
traditional summarization approaches, we create the profiles by selecting
diverse and representative content from all available modalities, i.e. the
text, image and user modality. The usefulness of the approach is evaluated
using artificial actors, which simulate user behavior in a relevance feedback
scenario. Multiple experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the quality
of our multimodal representations, to compare different embedding strategies,
and to determine the importance of different modalities. We demonstrate the
capabilities of the proposed approach on two different multimedia collections
originating from the violent online extremism forum Stormfront and the
microblogging platform Twitter, which are particularly interesting due to the
high semantic level of the discussions they feature
An Investigation on Text-Based Cross-Language Picture Retrieval Effectiveness through the Analysis of User Queries
Purpose: This paper describes a study of the queries generated from a user experiment for cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) from a historic image archive. Italian speaking users generated 618 queries for a set of known-item search tasks. The queries generated by userâs interaction with the system have been analysed and the results used to suggest recommendations for the future development of cross-language retrieval systems for digital image libraries.
Methodology: A controlled lab-based user study was carried out using a prototype Italian-English image retrieval system. Participants were asked to carry out searches for 16 images provided to them, a known-item search task. Userâs interactions with the system were recorded and queries were analysed manually quantitatively and qualitatively.
Findings: Results highlight the diversity in requests for similar visual content and the weaknesses of Machine Translation for query translation. Through the manual translation of queries we show the benefits of using high-quality translation resources. The results show the individual characteristics of userâs whilst performing known-item searches and the overlap obtained between query terms and structured image captions, highlighting the use of userâs search terms for objects within the foreground of an image.
Limitations and Implications: This research looks in-depth into one case of interaction and one image repository. Despite this limitation, the discussed results are likely to be valid across other languages and image repository.
Value: The growing quantity of digital visual material in digital libraries offers the potential to apply techniques from CLIR to provide cross-language information access services. However, to develop effective systems requires studying userâs search behaviours, particularly in digital image libraries. The value of this paper is in the provision of empirical evidence to support recommendations for effective cross-language image retrieval system design.</p
Patient and service user engagement in research: a systematic review and synthesized framework
BackgroundThere is growing attention towards increasing patient and service user engagement (PSUE) in biomedical and health services research. Existing variations in language and design inhibit reporting and indexing, which are crucial to comparative effectiveness in determining best practices.ObjectiveThis paper utilizes a systematic review and environmental scan to derive an evidenceâbased framework for PSUE.DesignA metanarrative systematic review and environmental scan/manual search using scientific databases and other search engines, along with feedback from a patient advisory group (PAG).Eligible sourcesEnglishâlanguage studies, commentaries, grey literature and other sources (including systematic and nonâsystematic reviews) pertaining to patient and public involvement in biomedical and health services research.Data extractedStudy description (e.g. participant demographics, research setting) and design, if applicable; frameworks, conceptualizations or planning schemes for PSUEârelated endeavours; and methods for PSUE initiation and gathering patients'/service users' input or contributions.ResultsOverall, 202 sources were included and met eligibility criteria; 41 of these presented some framework or conceptualization of PSUE. Sources were synthesized into a twoâpart framework for PSUE: (i) integral PSUE components include patient and service user initiation, reciprocal relationships, colearning and reâassessment and feedback, (ii) sources describe PSUE at several research stages, within three larger phases: preparatory, execution and translational.Discussion and ConclusionsEfforts at developing a solid evidence base on PSUE are limited by the nonâstandard and nonâempirical nature of much of the literature.
