Coagulation defects in obstetrics

A paper read at a WHO/UNICEF Seminar on "Anemia and the Use of Blood Transfusion in M.C.H. Work" 6th June, 1967. Kampala. Coagulation defects are only rarely met with in obstetrics. It is probable that the complication is nowadays being diagnosed with increasing frequency, owing mainly to a greater awareness of the condition. In Mulago Hospital where the author practises, it occurred 11 times in about 33,500 deliveries in the period 1964-66. This gives an incidence of about 0.03%. In cases of concealed accidental hemorrhage the incidence is however higher; it appears to occur in some 5% of cases. A historical background of this condition is presented, and a description of how the clotting mechanism takes place is also explained. Furthermore, a detailed diagram describes the mechanism by which coagulation failure is produced. The author analysed cases at Mulago Hospital, indicating the relative clinical diagnosis and treatment, the latter consisting of two forms, preventive and curative.peer-reviewe

Real-time virtual sonography in gynecology & obstetrics. literature's analysis and case series

Fusion Imaging is a latest generation diagnostic technique, designed to combine ultrasonography with a second-tier technique such as magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography. It has been mainly used until now in urology and hepatology. Concerning gynecology and obstetrics, the studies mostly focus on the diagnosis of prenatal disease, benign pathology and cervical cancer. We provided a systematic review of the literature with the latest publications regarding the role of Fusion technology in gynecological and obstetrics fields and we also described a case series of six emblematic patients enrolled from Gynecology Department of Sant ‘Andrea Hospital, “la Sapienza”, Rome, evaluated with Esaote Virtual Navigator equipment. We consider that Fusion Imaging could add values at the diagnosis of various gynecological and obstetrics conditions, but further studies are needed to better define and improve the role of this fascinating diagnostic tool

Minding the Shop: The Case of Obstetrics Conferences

We estimate the impact of annual obstetricians and gynecologists’ conferences on births in Australia and the United States. In both countries, the number of births drops by 1 to 4 percent during the days on which these conferences are held. We argue that for this reason professional obstetrics societies should reconsider the timing of their annual conferences to accommodate the lowest natural birth rate in the year.timing of births, medical care, obstetrics, conference scheduling.
