Opportunity Recognition in High Tech and Regulatory Environment: A study of product based Indian Telecom start-ups
Opportunity recognition forms the first step of entrepreneurship. Off late entrepreneurship research has looked at opportunity recognition from varied lenses with entrepreneurial learning forming the core of most scholarly work. However opportunity recognition in high tech sectors is slightly different due to a high component of knowledge intensiveness inherent in such sectors and has been largely ignored in most work. So, we explore a specific high tech sector in the paper to understand and further the existing concepts within opportunity recognition process. We choose the Indian telecom sector as the context of the study and using an inductive case based approach arrive at conceptual combination as the dominant form of idea generation. The regulatory environment was found to acts as an enabler for the new ideas to flourish. We also bring in the idea of dynamic customization as the driving force behind the venture akin to symbiotic relationship present between organisms in the nature.

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION ACTIVITIES IN FIRMS AND PROPENSITY OF INDIVIDUALS STARTING NEW BUSINESSES
Prior studies have found that knowledge gained from work experience is a way to gather insights for business opportunity recognition. However, little is known about the specific types of knowledge that lead to business founding. Utilizing concepts from knowledge spillovers and from the opportunity recognition literatures, this paper argues that through an organization’s technological innovation activities, employees develop specialized knowledge that provides them with the entrepreneurial opportunities to found new businesses. Besides highlighting the positive relationship between technological innovation activities in organizations and the propensity of individuals leaving the organizations to start new businesses, this paper also provides a more fine-grained explanation of the types of technological innovation activities that can lead to business founding. We argue that knowledge acquired through product innovations is more easily appropriated by individuals for commercial uses, while knowledge acquired through process innovations must be integrated with other parts of the organization to be valuable. This study proposes that product innovation activities in an organization more so than process innovation activities in an organization are related to new business founding. Implications for opportunity exploitation and ways to appropriate knowledge spillovers are discussed.
A Network-based Approach on Opportunity Recognition
This paper argues that individuals differ in terms of their perception of opportunities because of the differences between the networks they are embedded in. We focus on two aspects of individuals' embeddedness in networks, that is, (1) individuals' belonging to residential areas that are more or less likely to be characterized by network cohesion, and (2) individuals' differential access to network contacts based on the level of human capital they hold. Our analyses show that the nature of one's residential area influences the perception of entrepreneurial opportunities. Further, we find a positive effect for education, i.e., people with a higher educational level are more likely to perceive entrepreneurial opportunities compared to those with a lower educational leve
Potential for opportunity recognition along the stages of entrepreneurship
The study primarily verifies whether ORP differs in stages of entrepreneurship and aims at identifying factors that influence ORP in different stages of entrepreneurship. The stages of entrepreneurship include pre-stage (individuals planning to start ventures), early-stage (entrepreneurs with ventures less than 3 years old) and late-stage (entrepreneurs with ventures more than 3 years in existence). The factors that were studied include personal factors (cognitive style, self-efficacy and motivation) and interpersonal factors (bridging social capital and bonding social capital). The results indicate the influence of different factors in different stages of entrepreneurship
