Electro-vortex flow simulation using coupled meshes
A numerical model for simulating electro-vortical flows in OpenFOAM is
developed. Electric potential and current are solved in coupled solid-liquid
conductors by a parent-child mesh technique. The magnetic field is computed
using a combination of Biot-Savart's law and induction equation. Further, a
deflated PCG solver for the electric potential is implemented. Finally, a
performance analysis is presented and the solver is validated against several
test cases
Integrated Numerical Modelling System for Extreme Wave Events at the Wave Hub Site
This paper examines an extreme wave event which occurred during a storm at the Wave Hub site in 2012. The extreme wave of 9.57 m height was identified from a time series of the heave data collected by an Oceanor Seawatch Mini II Buoy deployed at the site. An energy density spectrum was derived from this time series and then used to drive a physical model, which represents the extreme wave at 1:20 scale in Plymouth University’s new COAST Lab. The NewWave technique was used to define the input to the physical model. The experiment is reproduced in a numerical wave tank using the fully nonlinear CFD library OpenFOAM® and the wave generation toolbox waves2Foam. Results are evaluated, and issues regarding the predictions of a numerical model that is driven by the NewWave input signal are discussed. This study sets the basis for further research in coupling field data, physical modelling and numerical modelling in a more efficient and balanced way. This will lead to the new approach of composite modelling that will be implemented in future work
Numerical simulation of an array of heaving floating point absorber wave energy converters using OpenFOAM
In this paper we use the CFD toolbox OpenFOAM to perform numerical
simulations of multiple floating point absorber Wave Energy Converters (WECs) in a
numerical wave basin. The two-phase Navier-Stokes fluid solver is coupled with a motion
solver to simulate the wave-induced rigid body heave motion. The key of this paper is
to extend numerical simulations of a single WEC unit to multiple WECs and to tackle the issues of
modelling individual floating objects close to each other in an array lay-out. The developed
numerical model is validated with laboratory experiments for free decay tests and for
a regular wave train using two or five WECs in the array. For all the simulations presented, a good
agreement is found between the numerical and experimental results for the WECs’ heave
motions, the surge forces on the WECs and the perturbed wave field. As a result, our coupled
CFD–motion solver proofs to be a suitable and accurate toolbox for the study of
wave-structure interaction problems of multiple floating bodies in an array configuration
Influence of convex and concave curvatures in a coastal dike line on wave run-up
Due to climatic change and the increased usage of coastal areas, there is an increasing risk of dike failures along the coasts worldwide. Wave run-up plays a key role in the planning and design of a coastal structure. Coastal engineers use empirical equations for the determination of wave run-up. These formulae generally include the influence of various hydraulic, geometrical and structural parameters, but neglect the effect of the curvature of coastal dikes on wave run-up and overtopping. The scope of this research is to find the effects of the dike curvature on wave run-up for regular wave attack by employing numerical model studies for various dike-opening angles and comparing it with physical model test results. A numerical simulation is carried out using DualSPHysics, a mesh-less model and OpenFOAM, a mesh-based model. A new influence factor is introduced to determine the influence of curvature along a dike line. For convexly curved dikes (ad = 210° to 270°) under perpendicular wave attack, a higher wave run-up was observed for larger opening angles at the center of curvature whereas for concavely curved dikes (ad = 90° to 150°) under perpendicular wave attack, wave run-up increases at the center of curvature as the opening angle decreases. This research aims to contribute a more precise analysis and understanding the influence of the curvature in a dike line and thus ensuring a higher level of protection in the future development of coastal structures.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Feasibility study for estimating the offshore shear layer from on shore measurements
This paper presents an open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of air flow over a complex terrain. The open source C++ toolbox OpenFOAM has been used for the CFD analysis and the terrain considered is a scale model of Berlengas Island, which lies close to the Portuguese coast. In order to validate the CFD model, experimental work has been carried out in an open-section wind tunnel using hot-wire anemometry to measure the wind profiles above the island. In the majority of cases, the OpenFOAM CFD solutions show very good agreement with the experimental wind profile data, confirming that open source CFD solutions are possible for environmental flows over complex terrain. Such an analysis demonstrates the feasibility of estimating offshore boundary layer effects from onshore measurements
