The biological properties of OGI surfaces positively act on osteogenic and angiogenic commitment of mesenchymal stem cells
Osteogenesis process displays a fundamental role during dental implant osteointegration.
In the present work, we studied the influence of Osteon Growth Induction (OGI) surface
properties on the angiogenic and osteogenic behaviors of Mesenchymal Stem cells (MSC).
MSC derived from dental pulp and HUVEC (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells) were
grown in on OGI titanium surfaces, and cell proliferation and DNA synthesis were evaluated by
MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] test and DNA quantification.
Gene expression has been performed in order to evaluate the presence of mRNA related to endothelial
and osteogenesis markers. Moreover, morphological and biochemical analyses of osteogenesis
commitments has been performed. On OGI surfaces, MSC and HUVEC are able to proliferate.
Gene expression profiler confirms that MSC on OGI surfaces are able to express endothelial and
osteogenic markers, and that these expression are higher compared the expression on control
surfaces. In conclusion On OGI surfaces proliferation, expression and morphological analyses
of angiogenesis-associated markers in MSC are promoted. This process induces an increasing on

Retention of Pro-vitamin A Carotenoids in Ogi Powder as Affected by Packaging Materials and Storage Conditions
The effect of different packages and storage conditions on the retention of pro-vitamin A carotenoids (pVAC) in ogi powder produced from yellow-seeded maize was investigated to study its storage stability on micronutrient retention. The ogi powder produced was packaged in a high-density polyethylene bag (HDPE), a polypropylene woven sack (PP), and a polyvinyl chloride container (PVC), and stored in different conditions for 12 weeks with sampling done at three-week intervals for pVACanalysis. At the end of the storage period, ogi powder packaged in HDPE stored outside the storage box had the highest percentage retention (31.32%) of trans-β-carotene and that packaged in PVC container stored in the lighted compartment had the least (21.57%). Therefore, HDPE could be a good package for the retention of trans-β-carotene (which is the most bioactive) in ogi powder when stored at a temperature of 27°C and relative humidity of 73%
Nutritive Value of Sorghum Ogi Fortified with Groundnut Seed (Arachis) hypogaea
The utilization of groundnut seed as a constituents of sourghum ogi was investigated by preparing mixtures of ogi with increasing level of groundnut in 0, 25, 50, 70 and 100% addition. The product, sorghum groundnut-ogi was evaluated for proximate composition, titratable acidity and vitamins B. A taste panel evaluation was conducted to evaluate the acceptability of the products. The data obtained indicated an increase in protein, ash, and fat content. There were no apparent effect of groundnut addition of pH and titratable acidity in the mixtures. The taste panel evaluation and the amylograph pasting characteristics of the groundnut-ogi blends concluded that blends with 50% groundnut addition and beyond were acceptable improving the nutritive value of ogi for neonate

This report summarizes the events of the 1st International Functional Metagenomics Workshop. The workshop was held on May 7 and 8 in St. Jacobs, Ontario, Canada and was focused on building a core international functional metagenomics community, exploring strategic research areas, and identifying opportunities for future collaboration and funding. The workshop was initiated by researchers at the University of Waterloo with support from the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the University of Waterloo
Using the beat histogram for speech rhythm description and language identification
In this paper we present a novel approach for the description of speech rhythm and the extraction of rhythm-related features for automatic language identification (LID). Previous methods have extracted speech rhythm through the calculation of features based on salient elements of speech such as consonants, vowels and syllables. We present how an automatic rhythm extraction method borrowed from music information retrieval, the beat histogram, can be adapted for the analysis of speech rhythm by defining the most relevant novelty functions in the speech signal and extracting features describing their periodicities. We have evaluated those features in a rhythm-based LID task for two multilingual speech corpora using support vector machines, including feature selection methods to identify the most informative descriptors. Results suggest that the method is successful in describing speech rhythm and provides LID classification accuracy comparable to or better than that of other approaches, without the need for a preceding segmentation or annotation of the speech signal. Concerning rhythm typology, the rhythm class hypothesis in its original form seems to be only partly confirmed by our results
Trivial source bimodule rings for blocks and p-permutation equivalences
We associate with any p-block of a finite group a Grothendieck ring of certain p-permutation bimodules. We extend the notion of p-permutation equivalences introduced by Boltje and Xu [4] to source algebras of p-blocks of finite groups. We show that a p-permutation equivalence between two source algebras A, B of blocks with a common defect group and same local structure induces an isotypy
