Association of Competence, Motivation and Nurse Workload with Nurse Performance at Mental Hospital in Bali Province
Background and purpose: Average Bed Ocupation Rate (BOR) of Mental Hospital in Bali Province in 2014amounted to 85.3% with an average length of stay about 50 days. Preliminary study indicated inadequate performanceof nurses at Mental Hospital in Bali. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of competence, motivation and nurses workload with the performance of nurses in ward of Mental Hospital in Bali Province. Methods: This research was a cross sectional survey. The subjects of the study consisted of all nurses in the inpatientunit, amounting to 111 people. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires and observation sheet filledout by the head of the room. Data were analyzed using bivariate with chi-square test, and multivariate with logisticregression method. Results: Bivariate analysis showed significant association between the performance of nurses with competence andmotivation (p<0.001), however no association with workload (p=0.94). Multivariate analysis showed that theperformance of nurses was associated with competence with (AOR=65.38; 95%CI: 6.88-621.52) and with motivation(AOR=61.71; 95%CI: 7.15-532.59), however was not significantly associated with workload (AOR=1.012; 95%CI: 0.32-3.17).Conclusion: The performance of nurses were significantly associated with competence and motivation of its work, however not related to workload
Probabilistic priority assessment of nurse calls
Current nurse call systems are very static. Call buttons are fixed to the wall, and systems do not account for various factors specific to a situation. We have developed a software platform, the ontology-based Nurse Call System (oNCS), which supports the transition to mobile and wireless nurse call buttons and uses an intelligent algorithm to address nurse calls. This algorithm dynamically adapts to the situation at hand by taking the profile information of staff and patients into account by using an ontology. This article describes a probabilistic extension of the oNCS that supports a more sophisticated nurse call algorithm by dynamically assigning priorities to calls based on the risk factors of the patient and the kind of call. The probabilistic oNCS is evaluated through implementation of a prototype and simulations, based on a detailed dataset obtained from 3 nursing departments of Ghent University Hospital. The arrival times of nurses at the location of a call, the workload distribution of calls among nurses, and the assignment of priorities to calls are compared for the oNCS and the current nurse call system. Additionally, the performance of the system and the parameters of the priority assignment algorithm are explored. The execution time of the nurse call algorithm is on average 50.333 ms. Moreover, the probabilistic oNCS significantly improves the assignment of nurses to calls. Calls generally result in a nurse being present more quickly, the workload distribution among the nurses improves, and the priorities and kinds of calls are taken into account

ACTIVITIES OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS AS IDENTIFIED BY MEDICAL DIRECTORS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES
University health services play a very important role in the general health, performance, and well-being of the students, the university itself, and the community. As stated by the American College Health Association, the goal of a university health service is to promote and maintain those conditions which will permit and encourage each individual to realize optimum physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being.
University students have special health care needs such as drug and alcohol abuses, emotional problems, and gynecological, sexual, and contraceptive problems. It is the goal of the health professionals involved with students to meet those needs. Because of these special health care needs, the increasing number of university students, and the present problems associated with medical care and medical distribution, nurse practitioners have become involved in some university percent of these nurse practitioners are in college health services.3 It was believed by the investigators of this study that nurse practitioners could play a special role in this area of health care.
As student health medical directors are key persons in defining nurse practitioner activities, the purpose of this study was to determine the activities the directors identified as appropriate for nurse practitioners to perform in a university health care setting. The type of activities identified by them may be crucial in the decision to utilize nurse practitioners in the university student health setting
