Regional Integration: Challenges and Prospects for Africa

Regional integration refers to the removal of barriers to international commerce by states that are in same geographical area and interest, through regional integration agreements (RIAs).To foster trade, expansion of the economy, increase coherence, and major macroeconomic benefits across boundaries. In 1850-1890, regional integration was conceived in Europe. Africa is a precursor in the process as far back as 1910 and after the World War II more economic communities surged. Although, Africa’s share of global population is 14%, annual share of global GDP is less than 3%. Experts have blamed Africa marginalization on the absence of effective regional integration mechanism to boost the continent’s external trade. The AU should immediately assess the level of performance at every stage of continental development (national, regional and continental levels), while taking into account the latest realities globally. Regional public goods in North America

This paper will briefly examine the concept of RPGs as it applies to North America. Focusing on the role of these goods, it contextualizes today’s situation with a succinct account of North American integration. The paper argues that rule of law has emerged as one of the most important RPGs in North America, directed largely at regional economic transactions. While these effects have been important, the provision of rule of law is fragmentary and has not produced the degree of spillover that was hoped for. Finally, we conclude by examining the future prospects of RPG provision in North America

Canada\u27s new economy of decreasing state regulation, globalization, computerization and changes in information technology, and the shift from manufacturing to the service sector has grave - largely negative - implications for the future of law and lawyers. Moreover, the profession is fragmented and stratified. It comprises multiple constituencies - solo practitioners, large corporate firms and specialists - with differing demographies and professional roles, which are implicated in varying degrees in the new economy . As a result, they experience the restructuring of professional knowledge, governance, ethics and culture in ways so diverse as to put in question the prospects of a common professional future

The Elections of 2000: Politics, Culture and Economics in North America

The essays in this collection are the product of a conversation among scholars, spanning national borders and disciplinary boundaries, about the increasing integration of Canada, Mexico, and the United States and the development of a “continental perspective.” This conversation has been underway for some time, reflecting the causes, challenges, and consequences of economic, cultural, and political integration in North America.
