Nontraditional Students: Understanding and Meeting their Needs in the Anthropology Classroom
In light of the fact that nontraditional students (those age 25 years or older) outnumber traditional students on many US college campuses, it is important to understand their needs and experiences in higher education. A key characteristic distinguishing nontraditional students from traditional-aged college students is the high likelihood that they are juggling multiple competing demands and stressors, including parenthood, work, marriage, and financial responsibility. The findings presented here are part of a larger study that included in-depth interviews with 25 nontraditional undergraduate students at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU or Highlands). This article highlights the narratives of five of these nontraditional students to illustrate the range of experiences that emerged across the sample. The authors reflect on how learning these narratives has influenced their personal approaches to teaching and engaging with nontraditional students and provide strategies for supporting nontraditional students in the anthropology classroom

Non-traditional crops, traditional constraints : the adoption and diffusion of export crops among guatemalan smallholders
This paper uses a duration analysis based on adoption data spanning more than 25 years from six communities in the Central Highlands of Guatemala. The analysis explores how household characteristics and external trends play into both the adoption and diffusion processes of non-traditional exports among smallholders. Adoption was initially widespread and rapid, which led nontraditional exports to be hailed as a pro-poor success, reaching all but the smallest landholders. However, over time more than two-thirds of adopters eventually dropped out of production of nontraditional exports. Based on the analysis, production of nontraditional exports appears to have delivered less prosperity to adopters than initially promised. Although smallholders may be enticed into entering into nontraditional exports markets when conditions are favorable, they may lack the capacity to overcome the difficulties that inevitably arise in complex types of cultivations and in highly variable global agricultural markets. Governmental and non-governmental organizations can attempt to mitigate these difficulties, but market forces may overwhelm their efforts, with some adopters still unable to compete in global markets.Access to Finance,Rural Development Knowledge&Information Systems,Economic Theory&Research,Markets and Market Access,Rural Poverty Reduction
Health Implications in Regards to the Changing Nature of Work
This theoretical paper is relevant to nontraditional workers, traditional employees, and businesses searching for ways to enhance workers’ health and well-being. Businesses should also find this information helpful if they are aiming to increase their bottom line. The changing nature of work has health implications for both nontraditional workers and traditional employees; however, it has not been readily studied. I review the current literature available and analyze the health implications for both nontraditional workers and traditional employees. After reviewing a variety of literature I propose two theoretical propositions. My first proposition is that the changing nature of work, specifically the increase of workplace flexibility, benefits traditional employees more so than nontraditional workers. Secondly, I propose that nontraditional workers are likely to endure more of the negative health implications in response to the changing nature of work when compared to traditional employees. Ultimately, there needs to be further research done on comparing traditional employees to nontraditional workers and further investigation on what kind of health implications we should expect from the changing nature of work. From reviewing and discussing the negative health implications, it becomes evident that businesses need to focus on enhancing the health and well-being of all workers. I conclude by suggesting ways in which businesses can achieve a happier and healthier workforce
THE IMPACT OF BIG-BOX STORES ON RETAIL FOOD PRICES AND THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX
Over the past 10 years, the growth of nontraditional retail food outlets has transformed the food market landscape, increasing the variety of shopping and food options available to consumers, as well as price variation in retail food markets. This report focuses on these dynamics and how they affect food price variation across store format types. The differences in prices across store formats are especially noteworthy when compared with standard measures of food price inflation over time. Over the past 20 years, annual food price changes, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), have averaged just 3 percent per year, while food prices for similar products can vary by more than 10 percent across store formats at any one point in time. Academic procrastination in non-traditional college students
Introducción. La procrastinación es la acción de retrasar la realización de tareas necesarias, hasta el extremo de generar malestar y perjuicios a los individuos que la protagonizan. La presencia de alumnado no tradicional en las universidades se ha incrementado notablemente en las últimas décadas. Este tipo de estudiantes encuentra dificultades en sus estudios, las cua- les podrían propiciar una mayor incidencia de las conductas procrastinadoras. Para compro- barlo, comparamos los niveles de procrastinación y motivos para procrastinar entre estudian- tes tradicionales y no tradicionales.
Método. Utilizamos una muestra de 479 estudiantes colombianos. Los niveles de procrasti- nación y motivos para procrastinar fueron medidos a partir de la Procrastination Assessment Scale – Students (PASS). En el análisis de datos se utilizaron estadísticos descriptivos, análisis factorial exploratorio, prueba t para muestras independientes y d de Cohen.
Resultados. Los estudiantes no tradicionales han presentado niveles de procrastinación supe- riores (t=4,412; p<0,001; d=0,459), aunque los motivos para procrastinar no difieren de los aportados por estudiantes tradicionales. El carácter de estudiante no tradicional ha resultado ser una variable relevante en la explicación de la procrastinación académica.
Discusión y conclusiones. A partir de estos resultados, se deriva la conveniencia de ofrecer una orientación académica al alumnado no tradicional, con el fin de tratar la procrastinación y reducir así posibles riesgos de bajo rendimiento o abandono en este colectivo estudiantil.Introduction. Procrastination is the act of delaying necessary tasks until the extreme of ex- periencing discomfort and negative consequences to the individuals. The presence of nontra- ditional students at universities is a phenomenon which has increased remarkably over the last decades. This type of university students finds some difficulties during their grade. This could result in a higher prevalence of procrastination behaviors among nontraditional students at university. To test this, our work compares procrastination levels and reasons to procrastinate among traditional and nontraditional students
Method. A sample of 479 Colombian college students was used. Procrastination and the rea- sons to procrastinate are measured by the Procrastination Assessment Scale - Students (PASS). The data analysis is based on descriptive statistics, exploratory factorial analysis, t test for independent samples and Coohen’s d.
Results. Nontraditional students show higher procrastination levels (t=4,412; p<0,001; d=0,459), although their reasons to procrastinate are similar to those of traditional students. The nontraditional student condition is a demographic variable relevant for explaining aca- demic procrastination.
Discussion and Conclusion. These results suggest the convenience of offering academic counselling and guidance to nontraditional students, in order to attend procrastination and reducing that way low achievement or dropout risks
The Decline of Traditional Banking: Implications for Financial Stabilityand Regulatory Policy
This paper outlines the fundamental economic forces that have led to the decline in traditional banking, that is the process of making loans and funding them by issuing short-dated deposits. The declining competitiveness of traditional banking may threaten financial stability by increasing bank failures and by increasing the incentives for banks to take on more risk, either by making more risky loans or by engaging in 'nontraditional' financial activities that promise higher returns but greater risk. This paper argues that most nontraditional activities, such as banks acting as derivatives dealers, expose banks to risks and moral hazard problems that are similar to those associated with banks' traditional activities, and that these activities can be regulated as effectively as can traditional activities. One regulatory approach to maintain financial stability and strengthen the banking system is to adopt a system of structured bank capital requirements with early corrective action by regulators. An important element in this approach is that market- value accounting principles would be applied to banks and there would be increased public disclosure by banks of the risks associated with their trading activities. With this regulatory structure in place, banks could be permitted greater freedom to expand into nontraditional activities.

A Modern Union for the Modern Economy
Membership in traditional unions has steeply declined over the past two decades. As the White House and Congress are now completely Republican controlled, there promises to be no reversal of this trend in the near future. In the face of this rejection of traditional bargaining efforts, several attempts have been made to create alternative “quasi-union” or “alt-labor” relationships between workers and employers. These arrangements represent a creative approach by workers to have their voices heard in a collective manner, though still falling far short of the traditional protections afforded by employment and labor law statutes. This Article critiques one such high-profile, quasi-union effort in the technology sector—the Uber Guild. While the Guild does not provide any of the traditional bargaining protections found in the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), it offers Uber drivers some input over the terms and conditions under which they work. Falling somewhere between employment-at-will and unionization protected under the NLRA, the Uber Guild is a creative attempt to help both workers and the company to better understand how they can improve the working relationship. This Article navigates the Uber Guild and other nontraditional efforts that promise a collective voice for workers in the face of a precipitous decline in union membership. This Article further explores how workers in the technology sector face unique challenges under workplace laws. We argue that these workers are particularly well situated to benefit from a nontraditional union model and explain what that model should look like. While a traditional union protected by the NLRA is the optimal bargaining arrangement, we must consider the enormous challenges workers in the technology sector face in obtaining these protections
