Group-blind detection with very large antenna arrays in the presence of pilot contamination
Massive MIMO is, in general, severely affected by pilot contamination. As
opposed to traditional detectors, we propose a group-blind detector that takes
into account the presence of pilot contamination. While sticking to the
traditional structure of the training phase, where orthogonal pilot sequences
are reused, we use the excess antennas at each base station to partially remove
interference during the uplink data transmission phase. We analytically derive
the asymptotic SINR achievable with group-blind detection, and confirm our
findings by simulations. We show, in particular, that in an
interference-limited scenario with one dominant interfering cell, the SINR can
be doubled compared to non-group-blind detection.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Massive MIMO Multicasting in Noncooperative Cellular Networks
We study the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicast
transmission in cellular networks where each base station (BS) is equipped with
a large-scale antenna array and transmits a common message using a single
beamformer to multiple mobile users. We first show that when each BS knows the
perfect channel state information (CSI) of its own served users, the
asymptotically optimal beamformer at each BS is a linear combination of the
channel vectors of its multicast users. Moreover, the optimal combining
coefficients are obtained in closed form. Then we consider the imperfect CSI
scenario where the CSI is obtained through uplink channel estimation in
timedivision duplex systems. We propose a new pilot scheme that estimates the
composite channel which is a linear combination of the individual channels of
multicast users in each cell. This scheme is able to completely eliminate pilot
contamination. The pilot power control for optimizing the multicast beamformer
at each BS is also derived. Numerical results show that the asymptotic
performance of the proposed scheme is close to the ideal case with perfect CSI.
Simulation also verifies the effectiveness of the proposed scheme with finite
number of antennas at each BS.Comment: to appear in IEEE JSAC Special Issue on 5G Wireless Communication

Wireless Power Transfer in Massive MIMO Aided HetNets with User Association
This paper explores the potential of wireless power transfer (WPT) in massive
multiple input multiple output (MIMO) aided heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
where massive MIMO is applied in the macrocells, and users aim to harvest as
much energy as possible and reduce the uplink path loss for enhancing their
information transfer. By addressing the impact of massive MIMO on the user
association, we compare and analyze two user association schemes. We adopt the
linear maximal ratio transmission beam-forming for massive MIMO power transfer
to recharge users. By deriving new statistical properties, we obtain the exact
and asymptotic expressions for the average harvested energy. Then we derive the
average uplink achievable rate under the harvested energy constraint.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, to appear in IEEE Transactions on
