The aim of this paper is to verify the capacities and limitations of the newspaper column (understood as a genre) as a tool for creating the image of its author. In the paper, the distinguishing features of a column are first presented, and then a hypothesis is proposed for predicting which attributes of its author may be generated by the column’s features. This hypothesis is juxtaposed with the results of empirical research. The main task of this research was to read the texts of one of two Polish columnists – Krzysztof Varga and Szymon Hołownia – and subsequently answer questions indicating the authors’ attributes. This procedure made it possible to recreate the image of the text’s author. The results demonstrated the influence of the column’s distinguishing features on the image of its author inferred by readers.Zadanie „Stworzenie anglojęzycznych wersji wydawanych publikacji” finansowane w ramach umowy nr 948/P-DUN/2016 ze środków Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego przeznaczonych na działalność upowszechniającą naukę

Chicago Snapshot 2005-2006: A Year of School Newspapers and Advisers

We took a snapshot of high school newspapers and their advisers in Chicago last year, hoping for a glimpse into the future of student journalism in our city. We surveyed all of the city's high schools, but we focused on four: Morgan Park High School, North Lawndale College Preparatory Charter High School, Chicago International Charter School Northtown Academy and Northside College Preparatory High School. The four are a diverse but representative group in many ways, as you'll see. We found a first-year adviser whose journalism class required current events quizzes and "First Amendment Fridays" - and an experienced adviser who has embraced teaching journalism over English, his original field, because he likes journalism's sense of purpose. We found a strong student-run newspaper that also has established itself online - and a group of students who, with the help of a community newspaper, learned the joys of being published and making money in journalism. So we found good news. We also found change: Advisers at the two charter schools, both new last year, left their positions at the end of 2005-06. That happens altogether too often in Chicago schools, whether they're public, private or charter. And we found disturbing news: Our survey of advisers and journalism teachers found that, when compared to 10 years ago, school newspapers publish less frequently, advisers have less teaching and advising experience, and principals are more likely to review the paper before it's published. A larger percentage of public schools are completely without newspapers now than was the case in 1996. What does the future hold? At best, we found, it's a mixed outlook

Substantiating a political public sphere in the Scottish press : a comparative analysis

    Get PDF
This article uses content analysis to characterize the performance of the media in a national public sphere, by setting apart those qualities that typify internal press coverage of a political event. The article looks at the coverage of the 1999 devolved Scottish election from the day before the election until the day after. It uses a word count to measure the election material in Scottish newspapers the Herald, the Press and Journal and the Scotsman, and United Kingdom newspapers the Guardian, the Independent and The Times, and categorizes that material according to discourse type, day and page selection. The article finds a number of qualities that typify the Scottish sample in particular, and might be broadly indicative of a political public sphere in action. Firstly, and not unexpectedly, it finds that the Scottish newspapers carry significantly more election coverage. Just as tellingly, though, the article finds that the Scottish papers offer a greater proportion of advice and background information, in the form of opinion columns and feature articles. It also finds that the Scottish papers place a greater concentration of both informative and evaluative material in the period before the vote, consistent with their making a contribution to informed political action. Lastly, the article finds that the Scottish sample situates coverage nearer the front of the paper and places a greater proportion on recto pages. The article therefore argues that the Scottish papers display features that distinguish them from the UK papers, and are broadly consistent with their forming part of a deliberative public sphere, and suggests that these qualities might be explored as a means of judging future media performance

Our research seeks to understand the emerging journalism practiced in Second Life—a computer-generated alternative reality. Framed by postmodernism, this study uses an ideological analysis to evaluate the three Second Life newspapers: the Alphaville Herald, the Metaverse Messenger and the Second Life Newspaper. We suggest that journalism in Second Life focuses on community building and education, considers the influence of the on-line world to resident members\u27 off-line lives and raises important questions about freedom of expression
