Control of Three-Phase Grid-Connected Microgrids Using Artificial Neural Networks
A microgrid consists of a variety of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs). A key issue is how to control DERs within the microgrid and how to connect them to or disconnect them from the microgrid quickly. This paper presents a strategy for controlling inverter-interfaced DERs within a microgrid using an artificial neural network, which implements a dynamic programming algorithm and is trained with a new Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm. Compared to conventional control methods, our neural network controller exhibits fast response time, low overshoot, and, in general, the best performance. In particular, the neural network controller can quickly connect or disconnect inverter-interfaced DERs without the need for a synchronization controller, efficiently track fast-changing reference commands, tolerate system disturbances, and satisfy control requirements at grid-connected mode, islanding mode, and their transition
Application of Neural-Like P Systems With State Values for Power Coordination of Photovoltaic/Battery Microgrids
The power coordination control of a photovoltaic/battery microgrid is performed with a novel
bio-computing model within the framework of membrane computing. First, a neural-like P system with
state values (SVNPS) is proposed for describing complex logical relationships between different modes
of Photovoltaic (PV) units and energy storage units. After comparing the objects in the neurons with the
thresholds, state values will be obtained to determine the con guration of the SVNPS. Considering the
characteristics of PV/battery microgrids, an operation control strategy based on bus voltages of the point of
common coupling and charging/discharging statuses of batteries is proposed. At rst, the SVNPS is used to
construct the complicated unit working modes; each unit of the microgrid can adjust the operation modes
automatically. After that, the output power of each unit is reasonably coordinated to ensure the operation
stability of the microgrid. Finally, a PV/battery microgrid, including two PV units, one storage unit, and
some loads are taken into consideration, and experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of
the proposed control strategy and the SVNPS-based power coordination control models
An Online Learning Method for Microgrid Energy Management Control*
We propose a novel Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme based on online-learning (OL) for microgrid energy management, where the control optimisation is embedded as the last layer of the neural network. The proposed MPC scheme deals with uncertainty on the load and renewable generation power profiles and on electricity prices, by employing the predictions provided by an online trained neural network in the optimisation problem. In order to adapt to possible changes in the environment, the neural network is online trained based on continuously received data. The network hyperparameters are selected by performing a hyperparameter optimisation before the deployment of the controller, using a pretraining dataset. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method for microgrid energy management through extensive experiments on real microgrid datasets. Moreover, we show that the proposed algorithm has good transfer learning (TL) capabilities among different microgrids
The Comparison Study of Short-Term Prediction Methods to Enhance the Model Predictive Controller Applied to Microgrid Energy Management
Electricity load forecasting, optimal power system operation and energy management play key roles that can bring significant operational advantages to microgrids. This paper studies how methods based on time series and neural networks can be used to predict energy demand and production, allowing them to be combined with model predictive control. Comparisons of different prediction methods and different optimum energy distribution scenarios are provided, permitting us to determine when short-term energy prediction models should be used. The proposed prediction models in addition to the model predictive control strategy appear as a promising solution to energy management in microgrids. The controller has the task of performing the management of electricity purchase and sale to the power grid, maximizing the use of renewable energy sources and managing the use of the energy storage system. Simulations were performed with different weather conditions of solar irradiation. The obtained results are encouraging for future practical implementation
Robust 24 Hours ahead Forecast in a Microgrid: A Real Case Study
Forecasting the power production from renewable energy sources (RESs) has become fundamental in microgrid applications to optimize scheduling and dispatching of the available assets. In this article, a methodology to provide the 24 h ahead Photovoltaic (PV) power forecast based on a Physical Hybrid Artificial Neural Network (PHANN) for microgrids is presented. The goal of this paper is to provide a robust methodology to forecast 24 h in advance the PV power production in a microgrid, addressing the specific criticalities of this environment. The proposed approach has to validate measured data properly, through an effective algorithm and further refine the power forecast when newer data are available. The procedure is fully implemented in a facility of the Multi-Good Microgrid Laboratory (MG(Lab)(2)) of the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, where new Energy Management Systems (EMSs) are studied. Reported results validate the proposed approach as a robust and accurate procedure for microgrid applications
Adaptive Neural Network-Based Control of a Hybrid AC/DC Microgrid
In this paper, the behavior of a grid-connected hybrid ac/dc microgrid has been investigated. Different renewable energy sources - photovoltaics modules and a wind turbine generator - have been considered together with a solid oxide fuel cell and a battery energy storage system. The main contribution of this paper is the design and the validation of an innovative online-trained artificial neural network-based control system for a hybrid microgrid. Adaptive neural networks are used to track the maximum power point of renewable energy generators and to control the power exchanged between the front-end converter and the electrical grid. Moreover, a fuzzy logic-based power management system is proposed in order to minimize the energy purchased from the electrical grid. The operation of the hybrid microgrid has been tested in the MATLAB/Simulink environment under different operating conditions. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness, the high robustness and the self-adaptation ability of the proposed control system
