    Conference Foreword This is the fifth year that the Australian Digital Forensics Conference has been held under the banner of the Security Research Institute, which is in part due to the success of the security conference program at ECU. As with previous years, the conference continues to see a quality papers with a number from local and international authors. 11 papers were submitted and following a double blind peer review process, 8 were accepted for final presentation and publication. Conferences such as these are simply not possible without willing volunteers who follow through with the commitment they have initially made, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the conference committee for their tireless efforts in this regard. These efforts have included but not been limited to the reviewing and editing of the conference papers, and helping with the planning, organisation and execution of the conference.     Protection and Disturbance Mitigation of Next Generation Shipboard Power Systems

    Today, thanks to modern advances mainly in the power electronics field, megawatt-level electric drives and magnetic levitation are being integrated into the marine power grids. These technologies operate based on Direct Current (DC) power which require Alternating Current (AC) to DC conversion within the current grid. Medium-voltage Direct Current (MVDC) and Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) are the next state-of-the-art technologies that researchers are leaning on to produce, convert, store, and distribute power with improved power quality, reliability, and flexibility. On the other hand, with the extensive integration of high-frequency power electronic converters, system stability analysis and the true system dynamic behaviors assessment following grid disturbances have become a serious concern for system control designs and protection. This dissertation first explores emerging shipboard power distribution topologies such as MVDC networks and FESS operation with charge and discharge dynamics. Furthermore, the important topic of how these systems perform in dynamic conditions with pulsed power load, faults, arc fault and system protection are studied. Secondly, a communication-based fault detection and isolation system controller that improves upon a directional AC overcurrent relay protection system is proposed offering additional protection discrimination between faults and pulsed-power Load (PPL) in MVDC systems. The controller is designed to segregate between system dynamic short-circuit fault and bus current disturbances due to a PPL. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed protection controller, different bus current disturbances are simulated within a time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation of a shipboard power system including a PPL system operating with different ramp rate profiles, pulse widths, peak powers, and fault locations. This overarching goal of this work is to address some of the critical issues facing the US Navy as warfighter mission requirements increase exponentially and move towards advanced and sophisticated pulsed power load devices such as high energy weapon systems, high energy sensor and radar systems. The analyses and proposed solutions in this dissertation support current shipbuilding industry priorities to improve shipboard power system reliability and de-risk the integration of new power system technologies for next generation naval vessels

    White RHINO: a low-cost communications radar hardware platform

    Includes bibliographical referencesThe Electromagnetic spectrum has always been a very expensive resource and hence, has not been accessible to everyone. Yet, it is under-utilized. The new Whitespace Technology standards provide an efficient way to use the spectrum. However, the concept of shared spectrum introduced by the Whitespace Technology promises to reduce the cost of accessing the spectrum by a huge margin. Also, because the standards utilize the television channels, the VHF and UHF frequencies facilitate wireless transmission over large distances. This has provided impetus to various application developers. Using Whitespace Technology for Communications Radar is one such novel application which has great benefits for the African scenario. Here, the population is scattered and infrastructure for navigation and tracking is inadequate. But, there is a shortage of low-cost commercially available hardware platforms tailored for the application. In order to boost Whitespace-based Communications Radar application development, the White RHINO(Reconfigurable Hardware Interface for computation and radio) hardware platform was developed. It aims to fill the gap of low-cost commercial hardware platforms available for Whitespace-based Communications Radar. Being a Communications Radar platform, the White RHINO had to be designed keeping the standards and regulating body norms as yardsticks. However, an achievable radar performance of the platform under various scenarios was also estimated. The White RHINO contains an FPGA (the Zynq7000 series) which has dual embedded ARM processing cores. For the wireless interface, it contains a field programmable RF transceiver and an RF frontend section. The platform contains wired networking capability of 2 Gbps. The platform also has 512 MB DDR3 and 128 Mbit NAND ash as onboard memory. Finally, it has USB host, SDIO and JTAG for programmability and temperature sensors for system monitoring. The manufactured boards were tested under lab environment. It was found that except a failure on the RF transceiver section (due to a PCB footprint error), other interfaces were functional. The White RHINO successfully runs both U-Boot and Linux as operating systems. The error and other minor bugs have been corrected for the next fabrication run. Also, the cost of the complete White RHINO system is less than 1000 USD which makes it a very powerful platform and yet, less expensive than most of the commercially available platforms designed for similar applications

    Development and Evaluation of a Sustainable e-Learning Framework for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia

    This thesis focuses on developing and evaluating a sustainable e-learning framework (SeLF) for the higher education institutions in Malaysia. A mixed methods approach was used. Data was collected through surveys from Malaysian universities to assess the characteristics of SeLF. The framework was then evaluated through expert interviews. The thesis highlights SeLF elements and their contribution to the Triple Bottom Line, facilitating sustainable e-learning and its contribution to society, the environment, and the economy

    Cyber Security in the Maritime Industry: A Systematic Survey of Recent Advances and Future Trends

    The paper presents a classification of cyber attacks within the context of the state of the art in the maritime industry. A systematic categorization of vessel components has been conducted, complemented by an analysis of key services delivered within ports. The vulnerabilities of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) have been given particular consideration since it is a critical subcategory of many maritime infrastructures and, consequently, a target for cyber attacks. Recent research confirms that the dramatic proliferation of cyber crimes is fueled by increased levels of integration of new enabling technologies, such as IoT and Big Data. The trend to greater systems integration is, however, compelling, yielding significant business value by facilitating the operation of autonomous vessels, greater exploitation of smart ports, a reduction in the level of manpower and a marked improvement in fuel consumption and efficiency of services.     Geographic Citizen Science Design: No one left behind

    Little did Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and other ‘gentlemen scientists’ know, when they were making their scientific discoveries, that some centuries later they would inspire a new field of scientific practice and innovation, called citizen science. The current growth and availability of citizen science projects and relevant applications to support citizen involvement is massive; every citizen has an opportunity to become a scientist and contribute to a scientific discipline, without having any professional qualifications. With geographic interfaces being the common approach to support collection, analysis and dissemination of data contributed by participants, ‘geographic citizen science’ is being approached from different angles. Geographic Citizen Science Design takes an anthropological and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) stance to provide the theoretical and methodological foundations to support the design, development and evaluation of citizen science projects and their user-friendly applications. Through a careful selection of case studies in the urban and non-urban contexts of the Global North and South, the chapters provide insights into the design and interaction barriers, as well as on the lessons learned from the engagement of a diverse set of participants; for example, literate and non-literate people with a range of technical skills, and with different cultural backgrounds.
