Distributed MAC Protocol Supporting Physical-Layer Network Coding
Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is a promising approach for wireless
networks. It allows nodes to transmit simultaneously. Due to the difficulties
of scheduling simultaneous transmissions, existing works on PNC are based on
simplified medium access control (MAC) protocols, which are not applicable to
general multi-hop wireless networks, to the best of our knowledge. In this
paper, we propose a distributed MAC protocol that supports PNC in multi-hop
wireless networks. The proposed MAC protocol is based on the carrier sense
multiple access (CSMA) strategy and can be regarded as an extension to the IEEE
802.11 MAC protocol. In the proposed protocol, each node collects information
on the queue status of its neighboring nodes. When a node finds that there is
an opportunity for some of its neighbors to perform PNC, it notifies its
corresponding neighboring nodes and initiates the process of packet exchange
using PNC, with the node itself as a relay. During the packet exchange process,
the relay also works as a coordinator which coordinates the transmission of
source nodes. Meanwhile, the proposed protocol is compatible with conventional
network coding and conventional transmission schemes. Simulation results show
that the proposed protocol is advantageous in various scenarios of wireless

TCP-Aware Backpressure Routing and Scheduling
In this work, we explore the performance of backpressure routing and
scheduling for TCP flows over wireless networks. TCP and backpressure are not
compatible due to a mismatch between the congestion control mechanism of TCP
and the queue size based routing and scheduling of the backpressure framework.
We propose a TCP-aware backpressure routing and scheduling that takes into
account the behavior of TCP flows. TCP-aware backpressure (i) provides
throughput optimality guarantees in the Lyapunov optimization framework, (ii)
gracefully combines TCP and backpressure without making any changes to the TCP
protocol, (iii) improves the throughput of TCP flows significantly, and (iv)
provides fairness across competing TCP flows
A cross layer multi hop network architecture for wireless Ad Hoc networks
In this paper, a novel decentralized cross-layer multi-hop cooperative network architecture is presented. Our architecture involves the design of a simple yet efficient cooperative flooding scheme,two decentralized opportunistic cooperative forwarding mechanisms as well as the design of Routing
Enabled Cooperative Medium Access Control (RECOMAC) protocol that spans and incorporates the physical, medium access control (MAC) and routing layers for improving the performance of multihop communication. The proposed architecture exploits randomized coding at the physical layer to realize cooperative diversity. Randomized coding alleviates relay selection and actuation mechanisms,and therefore reduces the coordination among the relays. The coded packets are forwarded via opportunistically formed cooperative sets within a region, without communication among the relays and without establishing a prior route. In our architecture, routing layer functionality is submerged into the
MAC layer to provide seamless cooperative communication while the messaging overhead to set up routes, select and actuate relays is minimized. RECOMAC is shown to provide dramatic performance improvements, such as eight times higher throughput and ten times lower end-to-end delay as well as reduced overhead, as compared to networks based on well-known IEEE 802.11 and Ad hoc On Demand

Exploiting Map Topology Knowledge for Context-predictive Multi-interface Car-to-cloud Communication
While the automotive industry is currently facing a contest among different
communication technologies and paradigms about predominance in the connected
vehicles sector, the diversity of the various application requirements makes it
unlikely that a single technology will be able to fulfill all given demands.
Instead, the joint usage of multiple communication technologies seems to be a
promising candidate that allows benefiting from characteristical strengths
(e.g., using low latency direct communication for safety-related messaging).
Consequently, dynamic network interface selection has become a field of
scientific interest. In this paper, we present a cross-layer approach for
context-aware transmission of vehicular sensor data that exploits mobility
control knowledge for scheduling the transmission time with respect to the
anticipated channel conditions for the corresponding communication technology.
The proposed multi-interface transmission scheme is evaluated in a
comprehensive simulation study, where it is able to achieve significant
improvements in data rate and reliability
