Form and Tonal Spectrum in 12-Tone Music: Approaches to Analysis in Schoenberg, Walker, and Webern

    Get PDF
Approaches to analysis in 12-tone music have been predominantly focused around the concept of atonality. Building off of ideas first imagined by theorists such as Heinrich Schenker and Arnold Schoenberg, I propose that all music can be understood as tonal using nature’s model, the overtone series. Through a detailed description of the organic nature of tonality, my work suggests that what was once understood as a dissonance can be reimagined as a new type of consonance. Analyzing passages of 12-tone music from Arnold Schoenberg, George Walker, and Anton Webern, I provide a means for expanding upon traditional Schenkerian Analysis, which has been traditionally limited to music of the 18th and 19th century. I suggest that all music with “tones” can be considered tonal, and that background-level graphs representing higher partials can be used to categorize musical passages as “more” or “less” tonal, in a traditional sense

Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria BiomĂšdica. Facultat de Medicina i CiĂšncies de la Salut. Universitat de Barcelona. Curs: 2022-2023. Tutor/Director: Trias Gumbau, GerardThe increasing number of surgical procedures emphasizes the importance of operating rooms in hospitals. They are currently experiencing a digital revolution, reflecting the future direction of this field. The correct configuration of all systems of operating rooms is essential for enhancing surgical efficiency and reducing costs. Technical panels, also known as control panels, play a vital role in configuring operating rooms. These panels have evolved from basic modular systems to more interactive and user-friendly devices. During this study, the technical control panels in operating rooms and the existing solutions in the market are evaluated. From a theoretical perspective, the systems that need to be integrated and how they are integrated through a central integration server are being studied. On the other hand, a semi-functional mockup of the graphical user interface has been created using the Figma tool. The project includes the new way of interacting with the users and the Functional Plan of the user interface. Additionally, a demonstration video has been included to assess the user experience

Co-Creating with the Senses: Towards an Embodiment Grammar for Conceptualising Virtual Reality (VR) Narrative Design

This creative practice thesis comprises two components, a dissertation titled Co-Creating with the Senses: Towards an Embodiment Grammar for Conceptualising Virtual Reality (VR) Narrative Design and a creative work, The Recluse, a fictional VR script written in the Maria Vargas Immersive Play template, available through Final Draft. The advent of publicly available virtual reality (VR) technologies has led to the emergence of a new genre of storytelling, henceforth referred to as ‘VR narratives’. There has therefore been a need to articulate its defining grammar and to contribute insights born out of artistic experimentation in a scholarly field which until recently was dominated by scientific points of view. Employing a somaesthetics approach outlined by researcher Kristina Höök, the dissertation draws on a qualitative study into 10 VR narrative works in order to propose an embodiment grammar through which the art form may be conceptualised. The study’s findings, a group of eight embodied states organised into a framework, urge for the relenting of authorial control in order to instead frame affective potential, thus echoing a Deleuzian concept of the assemblage. In particular, the framework draws attention to the way that VR’s deeper affective dimensions may be elucidated by framing co-creation through the medium’s distinct sensory possibilities. As interest gathers in a future metaverse, the insights raised by the study are significant, with potential applications in a range of affective design contexts. The Recluse is my original contribution to this emerging art form and a case study through which to interrogate the framework’s findings. A mystery with supernatural elements, the VR script aims to communicate an experience that transports the participant to the world of Alma Cohen, a famous artist turned recluse, where they are invited to experience the strange occurrences in Alma’s life through their own embodied actions. The VR script explores the potential for intimate encounters with virtual characters and the sensory, co-creational and affective possibilities which arise through these dynamics. It highlights, following the framework, the way that more open structuring approaches are required in order to access the medium’s deeper affective possibilities and also the present technological constraints in achieving this

    A Human-Centric Metaverse Enabled by Brain-Computer Interface: A Survey

The growing interest in the Metaverse has generated momentum for members of academia and industry to innovate toward realizing the Metaverse world. The Metaverse is a unique, continuous, and shared virtual world where humans embody a digital form within an online platform. Through a digital avatar, Metaverse users should have a perceptual presence within the environment and can interact and control the virtual world around them. Thus, a human-centric design is a crucial element of the Metaverse. The human users are not only the central entity but also the source of multi-sensory data that can be used to enrich the Metaverse ecosystem. In this survey, we study the potential applications of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technologies that can enhance the experience of Metaverse users. By directly communicating with the human brain, the most complex organ in the human body, BCI technologies hold the potential for the most intuitive human-machine system operating at the speed of thought. BCI technologies can enable various innovative applications for the Metaverse through this neural pathway, such as user cognitive state monitoring, digital avatar control, virtual interactions, and imagined speech communications. This survey first outlines the fundamental background of the Metaverse and BCI technologies. We then discuss the current challenges of the Metaverse that can potentially be addressed by BCI, such as motion sickness when users experience virtual environments or the negative emotional states of users in immersive virtual applications. After that, we propose and discuss a new research direction called Human Digital Twin, in which digital twins can create an intelligent and interactable avatar from the user's brain signals. We also present the challenges and potential solutions in synchronizing and communicating between virtual and physical entities in the Metaverse

Urban Space, Genre and Subjectivity in African and Latin American Cinema

This project studies twelve African and Latin American films from a range of eras and countries, with an emphasis on their treatment of urban space, their manipulation of genre elements, and their approaches to character subjectivity. The analysis draws on major works of urban theory by Henri Lefebvre, Manuel Castells, David Harvey, Jane Jacobs, and others in order to investigate the relationship between cinema and the urban experience. As the films in the study are mostly set in cities that are not discussed by the theorists, the analysis entails testing their theories against the realities of these other settings, as depicted in the films. Furthermore, as these films depict places and people not usually featured in commercial cinema, this project will emphasize ways in which the films challenge dominant patterns of cinematic representation with regard to African and Latin American people, places and culture. Finally, this project will analyze important structural and stylistic nuances of each film in order to contribute to existing discussions of African and Latin American film and global film in general

A discourse analysis of Lacanian psychoanalysts conceptualisation of child psychopathology

    Get PDF
This study explores how Lacanian Psychoanalysts understand child psychopathology. Addressing this question in line with the principles of the methodological approach that was adopted for the study meant conducting a review of the literature pertaining to the dominant discourses that construct the concepts ‘child’ and ‘psychopathology’. The discourses found to be most influentially to the construction of childhood, historically and contemporaneously, were those of religion, philosophy, and developmental psychology. A review of the literature concerning psychopathology revealed how developmental psychopathology and psychiatry remain the dominant models in research and the clinical treatment of children experiencing mental health problems. The most prominent methods of clinical treatment are also addressed as part of the literature review. This served as the backdrop against which the subject of Lacanian psychoanalysis with children is being explored. Lacanian psychoanalysis provides a coherent theory, with an emphasis on subjectivity, the unconscious, discourse and early childhood as factors that structure the individual. It is these elements that enable practitioners to conduct a form of treatment that is described as ‘one-by-one’, always unique and original to each case. Six semi-structured interviews were carried out with the participants and the interview data was transcribed and analysed using Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA). FDA was used to explore how the participants constructed their understanding of child psychopathology by paying attention to the discourses they used in discussing this subject. The study outlines the role of contemporary culture in the conceptualisation of childhood and psychopathology according to the participants and reveals a radically different way of conducting treatment to the dominant models, those that are addressed in the literature review. These findings from the study advocate for a more nuanced approach to treating children with mental health difficulties that recognises the unique individual qualities of each child and takes account of their social and cultural experience in devising and delivering programmes of treatment

Resilience is a concept involving adaptation and success in the face of challenges that arise daily and that endanger the harmonious development of the individual. Promoting preventive programs and promoting resilience is fundamental in childhood and adolescence, especially with vulnerable children, namely deaf children, as they face increased challenges in terms of communication and language daily. These challenges lead to others, for example, at a relational and emotional level. The European Curriculum for Resilience is part of a European consortium to promote cognitive, social, and emotional skills associated with resilience. Aware of the importance of this tool and the specific characteristics of deaf children and adolescents, this study aims to adapt the RESCUR to this population, implement it and evaluate it from the perspective of students, their parents, and teachers. The four investigations that make up this work present the following sequence of studies: (i) a comprehensive review of the literature on resilience in children and adolescents with deafness; (ii) a study with the adaptations of RESCUR for the deaf population, taking into account the structure of each session and respective activities; (iii) two studies, one quantitative and the other qualitative, carried out in a school context, in three Groups of Bilingual Reference Schools: in the north, center, and south of Portugal, with 37 deaf students, from preschool to 3rd cycle. The results from the perspective of parents, teachers, and students reveal improvements in terms of the acquisition of relational, communicational, and academic skills; at the level of individual and social well-being. Also included in this study is the document “Indications for the application of RESCUR with deaf children/adolescents” with specific guidelines for the educator to implement this curriculum in a school context; examples of adapted sessions are also presented
