    Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos

    We report on a search for heavy neutrinos (\nus) produced in the decay D_s\to \tau \nus at the SPS proton target followed by the decay \nudecay in the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if \nus is a component of ντ\nu_{\tau}.\ From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with 4.1×10194.1\times10^{19} protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the \nus mass range from 10 to 190 MeV\rm MeV. Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future experimental searches.     Recent solar & atmospheric nu-data strongly indicate need for physics beyond the Standard Model. I review the ways of reconciling them in terms of 3-nu oscillations. Though not implied by data, bi-maximal nu-mixing models emerge as a possibility. SUSY with broken R-parity provides an attractive way to incorporate it, opening the possibility of testing nu-anomalies at high- energy colliders such as the LHC or at the upcoming long-baseline or nu- factory experiments. Reconciling, in addition, the LSND hint requires a fourth, light sterile neutrino, nus. The simplest are the most symmetric scenarios, in which 2 of the 4 neutrinos are maximally-mixed and lie at the LSND scale, while the others are at the solar scale. The lightness of nus, the nearly maximal atmospheric mixing, and the solar/atmospheric splittings all follow naturally from the assumed lepton-number symmetry and its breaking. These basic schemes can be distinguished at neutral-current-sensitive solar & atmospheric neutrino experiments such as SNO. However underground experiments have not yet proven neutrino masses, as there are many alternatives. For example flavour changing interactions can play an important role in the explanation of solar and contained atmospheric data and could be tested e.g through \mu \to e + \gamma, \mu-e conversion in nuclei, unaccompanied by neutrino-less double beta decay. Conversely, a short-lived numu might play a role in the explanation of the atmospheric data. Finally, in the presence of a nus, a long-lived heavy nutau could delay the time at which the matter and radiation contributions to the energy density of the Universe become equal, reducing density fluctuations on smaller scales, thus saving the standard CDM scenario, while the light nue, numu and nus would explain the solar & atmospheric data.Comment: Invited talk at 2nd International Conference on Non-Accelerator New Physics (NANP-99), Dubna, June 28 - July 3, 199

    Neoliberalisation and 'lad cultures' in higher education

    This paper links HE neoliberalisation and ‘lad cultures’, drawing on interviews and focus groups with women students. We argue that retro-sexist ‘laddish’ forms of masculine competitiveness and misogyny have been reshaped by neoliberal rationalities to become modes of consumerist sexualised audit. We also suggest that neoliberal frameworks scaffold an individualistic and adversarial culture among young people that interacts with perceived threats to men’s privilege and intensifies attempts to put women in their place through misogyny and sexual harassment. Furthermore, ‘lad cultures’, sexism and sexual harassment in higher education may be invisibilised by institutions to preserve marketability in a neoliberal context. In response, we ask if we might foster dialogue and partnership between feminist and anti-marketisation politics

    Constraints and Period Relations in Bosonic Strings at Genus-g

    We examine some of the implications of implementing the usual boundary conditions on the closed bosonic string in the hamiltonian framework. Using the KN formalism, it is shown that at the quantum level, the resulting constraints lead to relations among the periods of the basis 1-forms. Deze onderzoek vergelijken Wittgenstein slechts begripsmatig met de continentale fenomenologen of beschrijven de ontwikkeling van het begrip fenomenologie in Wittgensteins werk. Myrthe van Nus laat zien waarom deze invalshoeken onvoldoende zijn om een antwoord op de vraag te kunnen formuleren of Wittgenstein verwantschap vertoont met de continentale fenomenologie en stelt een andere insteek voor die de methode van de fenomenologie centraal stelt. Een antwoord op de vraag formuleren of Wittgenstein tot de fenomenologische beweging behoort is belangrijk.     A holistic approach to enhance the use of neglected and underutilized species: the case of Andean grains in Bolivia and Peru

    The IFAD-NUS project, implemented over the course of a decade in two phases, represents the first UN-supported global effort on neglected and underutilized species (NUS). This initiative, deployed and tested a holistic and innovative value chain framework using multi-stakeholder, participatory, inter-disciplinary, pro-poor gender- and nutrition-sensitive approaches. The project has been linking aspects often dealt with separately by R&D, such as genetic diversity, selection, cultivation, harvest, value addition, marketing, and final use, with the goal to contribute to conservation, better incomes, and improved nutrition and strengthened livelihood resilience. The project contributed to the greater conservation of Andean grains and their associated indigenous knowledge, through promoting wider use of their diversity by value chain actors, adoption of best cultivation practices, development of improved varieties, dissemination of high quality seed, and capacity development. Reduced drudgery in harvest and postharvest operations, and increased food safety were achieved through technological innovations. Development of innovative food products and inclusion of Andean grains in school meal programs is projected to have had a positive nutrition outcome for targeted communities. Increased income was recorded for all value chain actors, along with strengthened networking skills and self-reliance in marketing. The holistic approach taken in this study is advocated as an effective strategy to enhance the use of other neglected and underutilized species for conservation and livelihood benefits

    R-Mode Oscillations and Spindown of Young Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars

    Recent work has shown that a young, rapidly rotating neutron star loses angular momentum to gravitational waves generated by unstable r-mode oscillations. We study the spin evolution of a young, magnetic neutron star including both the effects of gravitational radiation and magnetic braking (modeled as magnetic dipole radiation). Our phenomenological description of nonlinear r-modes is similar to, but distinct from, that of Owen et al. (1998) in that our treatment is consistent with the principle of adiabatic invariance in the limit when direct driving and damping of the mode are absent. We show that, while magnetic braking tends to increase the r-mode amplitude by spinning down the neutron star, it nevertheless reduces the efficiency of gravitational wave emission from the star. For B >= 10^14 (\nus/300 Hz)^2 G, where \nus is the spin frequency, the spindown rate and the gravitational waveforms are significantly modified by the effect of magnetic braking. We also estimate the growth rate of the r-mode due to electromagnetic (fast magnetosonic) wave emission and due to Alfven wave emission in the neutron star magnetosphere. The Alfven wave driving of the r-mode becomes more important than the gravitational radiation driving when B >= 10^13 (\nus/150 Hz)^3 G; the electromagnetic wave driving of the r-mode is much weaker. Finally, we study the properties of local Rossby-Alfven waves inside the neutron star and show that the fractional change of the r-mode frequency due to the magnetic field is of order 0.5 (B/10^16 G)^2 (\nus/100 Hz)^-2.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures; ApJ, accepted (v544: Nov 20, 2000); added two footnotes and more discussion of mode driving by Alfven wave
