    Improved cross-language information retrieval via disambiguation and vocabulary discovery

    Cross-lingual information retrieval (CLIR) allows people to find documents irrespective of the language used in the query or document. This thesis is concerned with the development of techniques to improve the effectiveness of Chinese-English CLIR. In Chinese-English CLIR, the accuracy of dictionary-based query translation is limited by two major factors: translation ambiguity and the presence of out-of-vocabulary (OOV) terms. We explore alternative methods for translation disambiguation, and demonstrate new techniques based on a Markov model and the use of web documents as a corpus to provide context for disambiguation. This simple disambiguation technique has proved to be extremely robust and successful. Queries that seek topical information typically contain OOV terms that may not be found in a translation dictionary, leading to inappropriate translations and consequent poor retrieval performance. Our novel OOV term translation method is based on the Chinese authorial practice of including unfamiliar English terms in both languages. It automatically extracts correct translations from the web and can be applied to both Chinese-English and English-Chinese CLIR. Our OOV translation technique does not rely on prior segmentation and is thus free from seg mentation error. It leads to a significant improvement in CLIR effectiveness and can also be used to improve Chinese segmentation accuracy. Good quality translation resources, especially bilingual dictionaries, are valuable resources for effective CLIR. We developed a system to facilitate construction of a large-scale translation lexicon of Chinese-English OOV terms using the web. Experimental results show that this method is reliable and of practical use in query translation. In addition, parallel corpora provide a rich source of translation information. We have also developed a system that uses multiple features to identify parallel texts via a k-nearest-neighbour classifier, to automatically collect high quality parallel Chinese-English corpora from the web. These two automatic web mining systems are highly reliable and easy to deploy. In this research, we provided new ways to acquire linguistic resources using multilingual content on the web. These linguistic resources not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Chinese-English cross-language web retrieval; but also have wider applications than CLIR

    Evaluating Information Retrieval and Access Tasks

    This open access book summarizes the first two decades of the NII Testbeds and Community for Information access Research (NTCIR). NTCIR is a series of evaluation forums run by a global team of researchers and hosted by the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Japan. The book is unique in that it discusses not just what was done at NTCIR, but also how it was done and the impact it has achieved. For example, in some chapters the reader sees the early seeds of what eventually grew to be the search engines that provide access to content on the World Wide Web, today’s smartphones that can tailor what they show to the needs of their owners, and the smart speakers that enrich our lives at home and on the move. We also get glimpses into how new search engines can be built for mathematical formulae, or for the digital record of a lived human life. Key to the success of the NTCIR endeavor was early recognition that information access research is an empirical discipline and that evaluation therefore lay at the core of the enterprise. Evaluation is thus at the heart of each chapter in this book. They show, for example, how the recognition that some documents are more important than others has shaped thinking about evaluation design. The thirty-three contributors to this volume speak for the many hundreds of researchers from dozens of countries around the world who together shaped NTCIR as organizers and participants.     Cross-lingual question answering

    Question Answering has become an intensively researched area in the last decade, being seen as the next step beyond Information Retrieval in the attempt to provide more concise and better access to large volumes of available information. Question Answering builds on Information Retrieval technology for a first touch of possible relevant data and uses further natural language processing techniques to search for candidate answers and to look for clues that accept or invalidate the candidates as right answers to the question. Though most of the research has been carried out in monolingual settings, where the question and the answer-bearing documents share the same natural language, current approaches concentrate on cross-language scenarios, where the question and the documents are in different languages. Known in this context and common with the Information Retrieval research are three methods of crossing the language barrier: by translating the question, by translating the documents or by aligning both the question and the documents to a common inter-lingual representation. We present a cross-lingual English to German Question Answering system, for both factoid and definition questions, using a German monolingual system and translating the questions from English to German. Two different techniques of translation are evaluated: • direct translation of the English input question into German and • transfer-based translation, by using an intermediate representation that captures the “meaning” of the original question and is translated into the target language. For both translation techniques two types of translation tools are used: bilingual dictionaries and machine translation. The intermediate representation captures the semantic meaning of the question in terms of Question Type (QType), Expected Answer Type (EAType) and Focus, information that steers the workflow of the question answering process. The German monolingual Question Answering system can answer both factoid and definition questions and is based on several premises: • facts and definitions are usually expressed locally at the level of a sentence and its surroundings; • proximity of concepts within a sentence can be related to their semantic dependency; • for factoid questions, redundancy of candidate answers is a good indicator of their suitability; • definitions of concepts are expressed using fixed linguistic structures such as appositions, modifiers, and abbreviation extensions. Extensive evaluations of the monolingual system have shown that the above mentioned hypothesis holds true in most of the cases when dealing with a fairly large collection of documents, like the one used in the CLEF evaluation forum.Innerhalb der letzten zehn Jahre hat sich Question Answering zu einem intensiv erforschten Themengebiet gewandelt, es stellt den nächsten Schritt des Information Retrieval dar, mit dem Bestreben einen präziseren Zugang zu großen Datenbeständen von verfügbaren Informationen bereitzustellen. Das Question Answering setzt auf die Information Retrieval-Technologie, um mögliche relevante Daten zu suchen, kombiniert mit weiteren Techniken zur Verarbeitung von natürlicher Sprache, um mögliche Antwortkandidaten zu identifizieren und diese anhand von Hinweisen oder Anhaltspunkten entsprechend der Frage als richtige Antwort zu akzeptieren oder als unpassend zu erklären. Während ein Großteil der Forschung den einsprachigen Kontext voraussetzt, wobei Frage- und Antwortdokumente ein und dieselbe Sprache teilen, konzentrieren sich aktuellere Ansätze auf sprachübergreifende Szenarien, in denen die Frage- und Antwortdokumente in unterschiedlichen Sprachen vorliegen. Im Kontext des Information Retrieval existieren drei bekannte Ansätze, die versuchen auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise die Sprachbarriere zu überwinden: durch die Übersetzung der Frage, durch die Übersetzung der Dokumente oder durch eine Angleichung von sowohl der Frage als auch der Dokumente zu einer gemeinsamen interlingualen Darstellung. Wir präsentieren ein sprachübergreifendes Question Answering System vom Englischen ins Deutsche, das sowohl für Faktoid- als auch für Definitionsfragen funktioniert. Dazu verwenden wir ein einsprachiges deutsches System und übersetzen die Fragen vom Englischen ins Deutsche. Zwei unterschiedliche Techniken der Übersetzung werden untersucht: • die direkte Übersetzung der englischen Fragestellung ins Deutsche und • die Abbildungs-basierte Übersetzung, die eine Zwischendarstellung verwendet, um die „Semantik“ der ursprünglichen Frage zu erfassen und in die Zielsprache zu übersetzen. Für beide aufgelisteten Übersetzungstechniken werden zwei Übersetzungsquellen verwendet: zweisprachige Wörterbücher und maschinelle Übersetzung. Die Zwischendarstellung erfasst die Semantik der Frage in Bezug auf die Art der Frage (QType), den erwarteten Antworttyp (EAType) und Fokus, sowie die Informationen, die den Ablauf des Frage-Antwort-Prozesses steuern. Das deutschsprachige Question Answering System kann sowohl Faktoid- als auch Definitionsfragen beantworten und basiert auf mehreren Prämissen: • Fakten und Definitionen werden in der Regel lokal auf Satzebene ausgedrückt; • Die Nähe von Konzepten innerhalb eines Satzes kann auf eine semantische Verbindung hinweisen; • Bei Faktoidfragen ist die Redundanz der Antwortkandidaten ein guter Indikator für deren Eignung; • Definitionen von Begriffen werden mit festen sprachlichen Strukturen ausgedrückt, wie Appositionen, Modifikatoren, Abkürzungen und Erweiterungen. Umfangreiche Auswertungen des einsprachigen Systems haben gezeigt, dass die oben genannten Hypothesen in den meisten Fällen wahr sind, wenn es um eine ziemlich große Sammlung von Dokumenten geht, wie bei der im CLEF Evaluationsforum verwendeten Version

    Topical relevance models

    An inherent characteristic of information retrieval (IR) is that the query expressing a user's information need is often multi-faceted, that is, it encapsulates more than one specific potential sub-information need. This multifacetedness of queries manifests itself as a topic distribution in the retrieved set of documents, where each document can be considered as a mixture of topics, one or more of which may correspond to the sub-information needs expressed in the query. In some specific domains of IR, such as patent prior art search, where the queries are full patent articles and the objective is to (in)validate the claims contained therein, the queries themselves are multi-topical in addition to the retrieved set of documents. The overall objective of the research described in this thesis involves investigating techniques to recognize and exploit these multi-topical characteristics of the retrieved documents and the queries in IR and relevance feedback in IR. First, we hypothesize that segments of documents in close proximity to the query terms are indicative of these segments being topically related to the query terms. An intuitive choice for the unit of such segments, in close proximity to query terms within documents, is the sentences, which characteristically represent a collection of semantically related terms. This way of utilizing term proximity through the use of sentences is empirically shown to select potentially relevant topics from among those present in a retrieved document set and thus improve relevance feedback in IR. Secondly, to handle the very long queries of patent prior art search which are essentially multi-topical in nature, we hypothesize that segmenting these queries into topically focused segments and then using these topically focused segments as separate queries for retrieval can retrieve potentially relevant documents for each of these segments. The results for each of these segments then need to be merged to obtain a final retrieval result set for the whole query. These two conceptual approaches for utilizing the topical relatedness of terms in both the retrieved documents and the queries are then integrated more formally within a single statistical generative model, called the topical relevance model (TRLM). This model utilizes the underlying multi-topical nature of both retrieved documents and the query. Moreover, the model is used as the basis for construction of a novel search interface, called TopicVis, which lets the user visualize the topic distributions in the retrieved set of documents and the query. This visualization of the topics is beneficial to the user in the following ways. Firstly, through visualization of the ranked retrieval list, TopicVis facilitates the user to choose one or more facets of interest from the query in a feedback step, after which it retrieves documents primarily composed of the selected facets at top ranks. Secondly, the system provides an access link to the first segment within a document focusing on the selected topic and also supports navigation links to subsequent segments on the same topic in other documents. The methods proposed in this thesis are evaluated on datasets from the TREC IR benchmarking workshop series, and the CLEF-IP 2010 data, a patent prior art search data set. Experimental results show that relevance feedback using sentences and segmented retrieval for patent prior art search queries significantly improve IR effectiveness for the standard ad-hoc IR and patent prior art search tasks. Moreover, the topical relevance model (TRLM), designed to encapsulate these two complementary approaches within a single framework, significantly improves IR effectiveness for both standard ad-hoc IR and patent prior art search. Furthermore, a task based user study experiment shows that novel features of topic visualization, topic-based feedback and topic-based navigation, implemented in the TopicVis interface, lead to effective and efficient task completion achieving good user satisfaction
