Hierarchy Composition GAN for High-fidelity Image Synthesis
Despite the rapid progress of generative adversarial networks (GANs) in image
synthesis in recent years, the existing image synthesis approaches work in
either geometry domain or appearance domain alone which often introduces
various synthesis artifacts. This paper presents an innovative Hierarchical
Composition GAN (HIC-GAN) that incorporates image synthesis in geometry and
appearance domains into an end-to-end trainable network and achieves superior
synthesis realism in both domains simultaneously. We design an innovative
hierarchical composition mechanism that is capable of learning realistic
composition geometry and handling occlusions while multiple foreground objects
are involved in image composition. In addition, we introduce a novel attention
mask mechanism that guides to adapt the appearance of foreground objects which
also helps to provide better training reference for learning in geometry
domain. Extensive experiments on scene text image synthesis, portrait editing
and indoor rendering tasks show that the proposed HIC-GAN achieves superior
synthesis performance qualitatively and quantitatively.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Fully Automatic Expression-Invariant Face Correspondence
We consider the problem of computing accurate point-to-point correspondences
among a set of human face scans with varying expressions. Our fully automatic
approach does not require any manually placed markers on the scan. Instead, the
approach learns the locations of a set of landmarks present in a database and
uses this knowledge to automatically predict the locations of these landmarks
on a newly available scan. The predicted landmarks are then used to compute
point-to-point correspondences between a template model and the newly available
scan. To accurately fit the expression of the template to the expression of the
scan, we use as template a blendshape model. Our algorithm was tested on a
database of human faces of different ethnic groups with strongly varying
expressions. Experimental results show that the obtained point-to-point
correspondence is both highly accurate and consistent for most of the tested 3D
face models
Multimodal Content Analysis for Effective Advertisements on YouTube
The rapid advances in e-commerce and Web 2.0 technologies have greatly
increased the impact of commercial advertisements on the general public. As a
key enabling technology, a multitude of recommender systems exists which
analyzes user features and browsing patterns to recommend appealing
advertisements to users. In this work, we seek to study the characteristics or
attributes that characterize an effective advertisement and recommend a useful
set of features to aid the designing and production processes of commercial
advertisements. We analyze the temporal patterns from multimedia content of
advertisement videos including auditory, visual and textual components, and
study their individual roles and synergies in the success of an advertisement.
The objective of this work is then to measure the effectiveness of an
advertisement, and to recommend a useful set of features to advertisement
designers to make it more successful and approachable to users. Our proposed
framework employs the signal processing technique of cross modality feature
learning where data streams from different components are employed to train
separate neural network models and are then fused together to learn a shared
representation. Subsequently, a neural network model trained on this joint
feature embedding representation is utilized as a classifier to predict
advertisement effectiveness. We validate our approach using subjective ratings
from a dedicated user study, the sentiment strength of online viewer comments,
and a viewer opinion metric of the ratio of the Likes and Views received by

An Ensemble-based Approach to Click-Through Rate Prediction for Promoted Listings at Etsy
Etsy is a global marketplace where people across the world connect to make,
buy and sell unique goods. Sellers at Etsy can promote their product listings
via advertising campaigns similar to traditional sponsored search ads.
Click-Through Rate (CTR) prediction is an integral part of online search
advertising systems where it is utilized as an input to auctions which
determine the final ranking of promoted listings to a particular user for each
query. In this paper, we provide a holistic view of Etsy's promoted listings'
CTR prediction system and propose an ensemble learning approach which is based
on historical or behavioral signals for older listings as well as content-based
features for new listings. We obtain representations from texts and images by
utilizing state-of-the-art deep learning techniques and employ multimodal
learning to combine these different signals. We compare the system to
non-trivial baselines on a large-scale real world dataset from Etsy,
demonstrating the effectiveness of the model and strong correlations between
offline experiments and online performance. The paper is also the first
technical overview to this kind of product in e-commerce context
Zero-Shot Deep Domain Adaptation
Domain adaptation is an important tool to transfer knowledge about a task
(e.g. classification) learned in a source domain to a second, or target domain.
Current approaches assume that task-relevant target-domain data is available
during training. We demonstrate how to perform domain adaptation when no such
task-relevant target-domain data is available. To tackle this issue, we propose
zero-shot deep domain adaptation (ZDDA), which uses privileged information from
task-irrelevant dual-domain pairs. ZDDA learns a source-domain representation
which is not only tailored for the task of interest but also close to the
target-domain representation. Therefore, the source-domain task of interest
solution (e.g. a classifier for classification tasks) which is jointly trained
with the source-domain representation can be applicable to both the source and
target representations. Using the MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, NIST, EMNIST, and SUN
RGB-D datasets, we show that ZDDA can perform domain adaptation in
classification tasks without access to task-relevant target-domain training
data. We also extend ZDDA to perform sensor fusion in the SUN RGB-D scene
classification task by simulating task-relevant target-domain representations
with task-relevant source-domain data. To the best of our knowledge, ZDDA is
the first domain adaptation and sensor fusion method which requires no
task-relevant target-domain data. The underlying principle is not particular to

Directional adposition use in English, Swedish and Finnish
Directional adpositions such as to the left of describe where a Figure is in relation to a Ground. English and Swedish directional adpositions refer to the location of a Figure in relation to a Ground, whether both are static or in motion. In contrast, the Finnish directional adpositions edellä (in front of) and jäljessä (behind) solely describe the location of a moving Figure in relation to a moving Ground (Nikanne, 2003).
When using directional adpositions, a frame of reference must be assumed for interpreting the meaning of directional adpositions. For example, the meaning of to the left of in English can be based on a relative (speaker or listener based) reference frame or an intrinsic (object based) reference frame (Levinson, 1996). When a Figure and a Ground are both in motion, it is possible for a Figure to be described as being behind or in front of the Ground, even if neither have intrinsic features. As shown by Walker (in preparation), there are good reasons to assume that in the latter case a motion based reference frame is involved. This means that if Finnish speakers would use edellä (in front of) and jäljessä (behind) more frequently in situations where both the Figure and Ground are in motion, a difference in reference frame use between Finnish on one hand and English and Swedish on the other could be expected.
We asked native English, Swedish and Finnish speakers’ to select adpositions from a language specific list to describe the location of a Figure relative to a Ground when both were shown to be moving on a computer screen. We were interested in any differences between Finnish, English and Swedish speakers.
All languages showed a predominant use of directional spatial adpositions referring to the lexical concepts TO THE LEFT OF, TO THE RIGHT OF, ABOVE and BELOW. There were no differences between the languages in directional adpositions use or reference frame use, including reference frame use based on motion.
We conclude that despite differences in the grammars of the languages involved, and potential differences in reference frame system use, the three languages investigated encode Figure location in relation to Ground location in a similar way when both are in motion.
