Campus library is a scientific library which is a part of Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences and its library. The purpose of this thesis was to find development ideas for Campus library’s multicultural library work. This was done by taking the needs and views of the foreign students into consideration.
The framework was divided into two different parts; the development of services and the multicultural library. The first part covered the development of libraries and development of services in general. Multi-cultural library part describes the policies of the multicultural library.
In the study I used a quantitative questionnaire and a qualitative focus group conversation. The target group consisted of the foreign students from the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences. The results showed that some of the Campus library services were found to be inadequate in terms of instructions or the quantity of material. Based on the results I presented development ideas for the Campus library
[Review of] Rebecca R. Martin. Libraries and the Changing Face of Academia: Responses to Growing Multicultural Populations
With great anticipation I sat down to read Rebecca R. Martin\u27s work about academic libraries services to multicultural populations in the United States. I had hoped to read about reasoned and responsible approaches to this current hot topic. What I found instead was an anthology of the politically correct chatter pulled from the last ten years of library literature. Martin\u27s book raises no new issues for the academic library administrator. Libraries And The Changing Face of Academia is a tame discussion of a serious issue that has kept academic librarians wringing their hands over the past decade. Rebecca Martin does do a good job of compiling this library literature into one volume. That is the problem with this work. She strings together all of the discussion and does not make any new statements
Exploring Literacy In Our Own Backyard: Increasing Teachers’ Understanding of Literacy Access through Community Mapping
Teachers develop a greater understanding of children when they leave their classrooms and become learners in the community. This article describes a project involving both pre-service and in-service teachers as they practice action research at community sites, such as a local homeless center, and then use these authentic experiences to inform their teaching
Accessibility of Diverse Literature for Children in Libraries: A Literature Review
This literature review addresses the issues surrounding accessibility of culturally diverse children’s literature in libraries, including the importance of making diverse literature accessible, the availability of such titles on the market, library collection development of diverse books, and selection criteria among children. These issues, in sum, determine how many books are available to children, how they are made available, and if children will even choose to read them. The review shows that the data is unclear on many points regarding the benefits of diverse literature, though intuitive claims of the positive influence of such titles are not discounted. It also finds low representation of diversity in publishing and library collections. Finally, studies of how children select reading materials are presented, showing that there is not a straightforward correlation between having books available and children choosing them. Areas of further research are recommended to give librarians more insight into how to better optimize collection resources to best benefit all young readers
