Question Type Guided Attention in Visual Question Answering
Visual Question Answering (VQA) requires integration of feature maps with
drastically different structures and focus of the correct regions. Image
descriptors have structures at multiple spatial scales, while lexical inputs
inherently follow a temporal sequence and naturally cluster into semantically
different question types. A lot of previous works use complex models to extract
feature representations but neglect to use high-level information summary such
as question types in learning. In this work, we propose Question Type-guided
Attention (QTA). It utilizes the information of question type to dynamically
balance between bottom-up and top-down visual features, respectively extracted
from ResNet and Faster R-CNN networks. We experiment with multiple VQA
architectures with extensive input ablation studies over the TDIUC dataset and
show that QTA systematically improves the performance by more than 5% across
multiple question type categories such as "Activity Recognition", "Utility" and
"Counting" on TDIUC dataset. By adding QTA on the state-of-art model MCB, we
achieve 3% improvement for overall accuracy. Finally, we propose a multi-task
extension to predict question types which generalizes QTA to applications that
lack of question type, with minimal performance loss
Supervised and Unsupervised Transfer Learning for Question Answering
Although transfer learning has been shown to be successful for tasks like
object and speech recognition, its applicability to question answering (QA) has
yet to be well-studied. In this paper, we conduct extensive experiments to
investigate the transferability of knowledge learned from a source QA dataset
to a target dataset using two QA models. The performance of both models on a
TOEFL listening comprehension test (Tseng et al., 2016) and MCTest (Richardson
et al., 2013) is significantly improved via a simple transfer learning
technique from MovieQA (Tapaswi et al., 2016). In particular, one of the models
achieves the state-of-the-art on all target datasets; for the TOEFL listening
comprehension test, it outperforms the previous best model by 7%. Finally, we
show that transfer learning is helpful even in unsupervised scenarios when

Adapting Visual Question Answering Models for Enhancing Multimodal Community Q&A Platforms
Question categorization and expert retrieval methods have been crucial for
information organization and accessibility in community question & answering
(CQA) platforms. Research in this area, however, has dealt with only the text
modality. With the increasing multimodal nature of web content, we focus on
extending these methods for CQA questions accompanied by images. Specifically,
we leverage the success of representation learning for text and images in the
visual question answering (VQA) domain, and adapt the underlying concept and
architecture for automated category classification and expert retrieval on
image-based questions posted on Yahoo! Chiebukuro, the Japanese counterpart of
Yahoo! Answers.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to tackle the
multimodality challenge in CQA, and to adapt VQA models for tasks on a more
ecologically valid source of visual questions. Our analysis of the differences
between visual QA and community QA data drives our proposal of novel
augmentations of an attention method tailored for CQA, and use of auxiliary
tasks for learning better grounding features. Our final model markedly
outperforms the text-only and VQA model baselines for both tasks of
