Embodied Question Answering
We present a new AI task -- Embodied Question Answering (EmbodiedQA) -- where
an agent is spawned at a random location in a 3D environment and asked a
question ("What color is the car?"). In order to answer, the agent must first
intelligently navigate to explore the environment, gather information through
first-person (egocentric) vision, and then answer the question ("orange").
This challenging task requires a range of AI skills -- active perception,
language understanding, goal-driven navigation, commonsense reasoning, and
grounding of language into actions. In this work, we develop the environments,
end-to-end-trained reinforcement learning agents, and evaluation protocols for

Temporal Relational Reasoning in Videos
Temporal relational reasoning, the ability to link meaningful transformations
of objects or entities over time, is a fundamental property of intelligent
species. In this paper, we introduce an effective and interpretable network
module, the Temporal Relation Network (TRN), designed to learn and reason about
temporal dependencies between video frames at multiple time scales. We evaluate
TRN-equipped networks on activity recognition tasks using three recent video
datasets - Something-Something, Jester, and Charades - which fundamentally
depend on temporal relational reasoning. Our results demonstrate that the
proposed TRN gives convolutional neural networks a remarkable capacity to
discover temporal relations in videos. Through only sparsely sampled video
frames, TRN-equipped networks can accurately predict human-object interactions
in the Something-Something dataset and identify various human gestures on the
Jester dataset with very competitive performance. TRN-equipped networks also
outperform two-stream networks and 3D convolution networks in recognizing daily
activities in the Charades dataset. Further analyses show that the models learn

Object Referring in Videos with Language and Human Gaze
We investigate the problem of object referring (OR) i.e. to localize a target
object in a visual scene coming with a language description. Humans perceive
the world more as continued video snippets than as static images, and describe
objects not only by their appearance, but also by their spatio-temporal context
and motion features. Humans also gaze at the object when they issue a referring
expression. Existing works for OR mostly focus on static images only, which
fall short in providing many such cues. This paper addresses OR in videos with
language and human gaze. To that end, we present a new video dataset for OR,
with 30, 000 objects over 5, 000 stereo video sequences annotated for their
descriptions and gaze. We further propose a novel network model for OR in
videos, by integrating appearance, motion, gaze, and spatio-temporal context
into one network. Experimental results show that our method effectively
utilizes motion cues, human gaze, and spatio-temporal context. Our method
