Differential Flatness of Lifting-Wing Quadcopters Subject to Drag and Lift for Accurate Tracking
In this paper, we propose an effective unified control law for accurately
tracking agile trajectories for lifting-wing quadcopters with different
installation angles, which have the capability of vertical takeoff and landing
(VTOL) as well as high-speed cruise flight. First, we derive a differential
flatness transform for the lifting-wing dynamics with a nonlinear model under
coordinated turn condition. To increase the tracking performance on agile
trajectories, the proposed controller incorporates the state and input
variables calculated from differential flatness as feedforward. In particular,
the jerk, the 3-order derivative of the trajectory, is converted into angular
velocity as a feedforward item, which significantly improves the system
bandwidth. At the same time, feedback and feedforward outputs are combined to
deal with external disturbances and model mismatch. The control algorithm has
been thoroughly evaluated in the outdoor flight tests, which show that it can
achieve accurate trajectory tracking
Trajectory Generation and Tracking Control for Aggressive Tail-Sitter Flights
We address the theoretical and practical problems related to the trajectory
generation and tracking control of tail-sitter UAVs. Theoretically, we focus on
the differential flatness property with full exploitation of actual UAV
aerodynamic models, which lays a foundation for generating dynamically feasible
trajectory and achieving high-performance tracking control. We have found that
a tail-sitter is differentially flat with accurate aerodynamic models within
the entire flight envelope, by specifying coordinate flight condition and
choosing the vehicle position as the flat output. This fundamental property
allows us to fully exploit the high-fidelity aerodynamic models in the
trajectory planning and tracking control to achieve accurate tail-sitter
flights. Particularly, an optimization-based trajectory planner for
tail-sitters is proposed to design high-quality, smooth trajectories with
consideration of kinodynamic constraints, singularity-free constraints and
actuator saturation. The planned trajectory of flat output is transformed to
state trajectory in real-time with consideration of wind in environments. To
track the state trajectory, a global, singularity-free, and
minimally-parameterized on-manifold MPC is developed, which fully leverages the
accurate aerodynamic model to achieve high-accuracy trajectory tracking within
the whole flight envelope. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is
demonstrated through extensive real-world experiments in both indoor and
outdoor field tests, including agile SE(3) flight through consecutive narrow
windows requiring specific attitude and with speed up to 10m/s, typical
tail-sitter maneuvers (transition, level flight and loiter) with speed up to
20m/s, and extremely aggressive aerobatic maneuvers (Wingover, Loop, Vertical
Eight and Cuban Eight) with acceleration up to 2.5g
Nonlinear robust control of tail-sitter aircrafts in flight mode transitions
© 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS In this paper, a nonlinear robust controller is proposed to deal with the flight mode transition control problem of tail-sitter aircrafts. During the mode transitions, the control problem is challenging due to the high nonlinearities and strong couplings. The tail-sitter aircraft model can be considered as a nominal part with uncertainties including nonlinear terms, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances. The proposed controller consists of a nominal H∞controller and a nonlinear disturbance observer. The nominal H∞controller based on the nominal model is designed to achieve the desired trajectory tracking performance. The uncertainties are regarded as equivalent disturbances to restrain their influences by the nonlinear disturbance observer. Theoretical analysis and simulation results are given to show advantages of the proposed control method, compared with the standard H∞control approach
NASA Puffin Electric Tailsitter VTOL Concept
Electric propulsion offers dramatic new vehicle mission capabilities, not possible with turbine or reciprocating engines; including high reliability and efficiency, low engine weight and maintenance, low cooling drag and volume required, very low noise and vibration, and zero emissions. The only penalizing characteristic of electric propulsion is the current energy storage technology level, which is set to triple over the next 5-10 years through huge new investments in this field. Most importantly, electric propulsion offers incredible new degrees of freedom in aircraft system integration to achieve unprecedented levels of aerodynamic, propulsive, control, and structural synergistic coupling. A unique characteristic of electric propulsion is that the technology is nearly scale-free, permitting small motors to be parallelized for fail-safe redundancy, or distributed across the airframe for tightly coupled interdisciplinary functionality without significant impacts in motor-controller efficiency or specific weight. Maximizing the potential benefit of electric propulsion is dependent on applying this technology to synergistic mission concepts. The vehicle missions with the most benefit include those which constrain environmental impact (or limit noise, exhaust, or emission signatures) are short range, or where large differences exist in the propulsion system sizing between takeoff and cruise conditions. Electric propulsion offers the following unique capabilities that other propulsion systems can t provide for short range Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft; elimination of engine noise and emissions, drastic reduction in engine cooling and radiated heat, drastic reduction in vehicle vibration levels, drastic improvement in reliability and operating costs, variable speed output at full power, for improved cruise efficiency at low tip-speed, elimination of high/hot sizing penalty, and reduction of engine-out penalties
System identification and model-based flight control system design for an agile maneuvring quadrotor platform
In this paper, we provide a system identification, model stitching and model-based flight control system design methodology for an agile maneuvering quadrotor micro aerial vehicle (MAV) technology demonstrator platform. The proposed MAV is designed to perform agile maneuvers in hover/low-speed and fast forward flight conditions in which significant changes in system dynamics are observed. As such, these significant changes result in considerable loss of performance and precision using classical hover or forward flight model based controller designs. To capture the changing dynamics, we consider an approach which is adapted from the full-scale manned aircraft and rotorcraft domain. Specifically, linear mathematical models of the MAV in hover and forward flight are obtained by using the frequency-domain system identification method and they are validated in time-domain. These point models are stitched with the trim data and quasi-nonlinear mathematical model is generated for simulation purposes. Identified linear models are used in a multi objective optimization based flight control system design approach in which several handling quality specifications are used to optimize the controller parameters. Lateral reposition and longitudinal depart/abort mission task elements from ADS-33E-PRF are scaled-down by using kinematic scaling to evaluate the proposed flight control systems. Position hold, trajectory tracking and aggressiveness analysis are performed, Monte-Carlo simulations and actual flight test results are compared. The results show that the proposed methodology provides high precision and predictable maneuvering control capability over an extensive speed envelope in comparison to classical control techniques. Our current work focuses on i) extension of the flight envelope of the mathematical model and ii) improvement of agile maneuvering capability of the MAV
Swashplateless-elevon Actuation for a Dual-rotor Tail-sitter VTOL UAV
In this paper, we propose a novel swashplateless-elevon actuation (SEA) for
dual-rotor tail-sitter vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs). In contrast to the conventional elevon actuation (CEA) which
controls both pitch and yaw using elevons, the SEA adopts swashplateless
mechanisms to generate an extra moment through motor speed modulation to
control pitch and uses elevons solely for controlling yaw, without requiring
additional actuators. This decoupled control strategy mitigates the saturation
of elevons' deflection needed for large pitch and yaw control actions, thus
improving the UAV's control performance on trajectory tracking and disturbance
rejection performance in the presence of large external disturbances.
Furthermore, the SEA overcomes the actuation degradation issues experienced by
the CEA when the UAV is in close proximity to the ground, leading to a smoother
and more stable take-off process. We validate and compare the performances of
the SEA and the CEA in various real-world flight conditions, including
take-off, trajectory tracking, and hover flight and position steps under
external disturbance. Experimental results demonstrate that the SEA has better
performances than the CEA. Moreover, we verify the SEA's feasibility in the
attitude transition process and fixed-wing-mode flight of the VTOL UAV. The
results indicate that the SEA can accurately control pitch in the presence of
high-speed incoming airflow and maintain a stable attitude during fixed-wing
