    Digital, memory and mixed-signal test engineering education: five centres of competence in Europe

    The launching of the EuNICE-Test project was announced two years ago at the first DELTA Conference. This project is now completed and the present paper describes the project actions and outcomes. The original idea was to build a long-lasting European Network for test engineering education using both test resource mutualisation and remote experiments. This objective is fully fulfilled and we have now, in Europe, five centres of competence able to deliver high-level and high-specialized training courses in the field of test engineering using a high-performing industrial ATE. All the centres propose training courses on digital testing, three of them propose mixed-signal trainings and three of them propose memory trainings. Taking into account the demand in test engineering, the network is planned to continue in a stand alone mode after project end. Nevertheless a new European proposal with several new partners and new test lessons is under construction

    Dependable Digitally-Assisted Mixed-Signal IPs Based on Integrated Self-Test & Self-Calibration

    Heterogeneous SoC devices, including sensors, analogue and mixed-signal front-end circuits and the availability of massive digital processing capability, are being increasingly used in safety-critical applications like in the automotive, medical, and the security arena. Already a significant amount of attention has been paid in literature with respect to the dependability of the digital parts in heterogeneous SoCs. This is in contrast to especially the sensors and front-end mixed-signal electronics; these are however particular sensitive to external influences over time and hence determining their dependability. This paper provides an integrated SoC/IP approach to enhance the dependability. It will give an example of a digitally-assisted mixed-signal front-end IP which is being evaluated under its mission profile of an automotive tyre pressure monitoring system. It will be shown how internal monitoring and digitally-controlled adaptation by using embedded processors can help in terms of improving the dependability of this mixed-signal part under harsh conditions for a long time

    Radiation Risks and Mitigation in Electronic Systems

    Electrical and electronic systems can be disturbed by radiation-induced effects. In some cases, radiation-induced effects are of a low probability and can be ignored; however, radiation effects must be considered when designing systems that have a high mean time to failure requirement, an impact on protection, and/or higher exposure to radiation. High-energy physics power systems suffer from a combination of these effects: a high mean time to failure is required, failure can impact on protection, and the proximity of systems to accelerators increases the likelihood of radiation-induced events. This paper presents the principal radiation-induced effects, and radiation environments typical to high-energy physics. It outlines a procedure for designing and validating radiation-tolerant systems using commercial off-the-shelf components.     Bus Rapid Transit: A Handbook for Partners, MTI Report 06-02

    In April 2005, the Caltrans Division of Research and Innovation (DRI) asked MTI to assist with the research for and publication of a guidebook for use by Caltrans employees who work with local transit agencies and jurisdictions in planning, designing, and operating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems that involve state facilities. The guidebook was also to assist to transit operators, local governments, community residents, and other stakeholders dealing with the development of BRT systems. Several areas in the state have experienced such projects ( San Diego , Los Angeles , San Francisco , and Alameda County ) and DRI wished to use that experience to guide future efforts and identify needed changes in statutes, policies, and other state concerns. Caltrans convened a Task Team from the Divisions of Research and Innovation, Mass Transportation, and Operations, together with stakeholders representing many of those involved with the BRT activities around the state. Prior to MTI’s involvement, this group produced a white paper on the topic, a series of questions, and an outline of the guidebook that MTI was to write. The MTI team conducted case studies of the major efforts in California, along with less developed studies of some of the other BRT programs under development or in early implementation phases around the state. The purpose was to clarify those issues that need to be addressed in the guidebook, as well as to compile information that would identify items needing legislative or regulatory action and items that Caltrans will need to address through district directives or other internal measures. A literature scan was used to develop a bibliography for future reference. The MTI team also developed a draft Caltrans director’s policy document, which provides the basis for Caltrans’ actions. This ultimately developed to be a project within a project. MTI submitted a draft document to Caltrans as a final product from the Institute. Task team members and Caltrans staff and leadership provided extensive review of the draft Bus Rapid Transit: A Handbook for Partners. Caltrans adopted a new Director’s Policy and published the document, BRT Caltrans. The MTI “wraparound” report presented below discusses in more detail the process that was followed to produce the draft report. The process was in many ways as much a project as the report itself

    Rationale for and design of a generic tiled hierarchical phased array beamforming architecture

    The purpose of the phased array beamforming project is to develop a generic flexible efficient phased array receiver platform, using a mixed signal hardware/software-codesign approach. The results will be applicable to any radio (RF) system, but we will focus on satellite receiver (DVB-S) and radar applications. We will present a preliminary mapping of beamforming processing on a tiled architecture and determine its scalability.\ud \ud The functionality, size and cost constraints imply an integrated mixed signal CMOS solution. For a generic flexible multi-standard solution, a software defined radio approach is taken. Because a scalable and dependable solution is needed, a tiled hierarchical architecture is proposed with reconfigurable hardware to regain flexibility. A mapping is provided of beamforming on the proposed architecture. The advantages and disadvantages of each solution are discussed with respect to applicability and scalability.\ud \ud Different beamforming processing solutions can be mapped on the same proposed tiled hierarchical architecture. This provides a flexible, scalable and reconfigurable solution for a wide application domain. Beamforming is a data-driven streaming process which lends itself well for a regular scalable architecture. Beamsteering on the other hand is much more control-oriented and future work will focus on how to support beamsteering on the proposed architecture as well

    Effective public transit is central to development. For the vast majority of developing city residents, public transit is the only practical means to access employment, education, and public services, especially when such services are beyond the viable distance of walking or cycling. Unfortunately, the current state of public transit services in developing cities often does little to serve the actual mobility needs of the population. Bus services are too often unreliable, inconvenient and dangerous. In response, transport planners and public officials have sometimes turned to extremely costly mass transit alternatives such as rail-based metros. Due to the high costs of rail infrastructure, cities can only construct such systems over a few kilometres in a few limited corridors. The result is a system that does not meet the broader transport needs of the population. Nevertheless, the municipality ends up with a long-term debt that can affect investment in more pressing areas such as health, education, water, and sanitation. However, there is an alternative between poor public transit service and high municipal debt. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) can provide high-quality, metro-like transit service at a fraction of the cost of other options. This document provides municipal officials, non-governmental organizations, consultants, and others with an introduction to the concept of BRT as well as a step-by-step process for successfully planning a BRT system

    Infrastructure for Detector Research and Development towards the International Linear Collider

    The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry.Comment: 54 pages, 48 picture
