Testing Interestingness Measures in Practice: A Large-Scale Analysis of Buying Patterns
Understanding customer buying patterns is of great interest to the retail
industry and has shown to benefit a wide variety of goals ranging from managing
stocks to implementing loyalty programs. Association rule mining is a common
technique for extracting correlations such as "people in the South of France
buy ros\'e wine" or "customers who buy pat\'e also buy salted butter and sour
bread." Unfortunately, sifting through a high number of buying patterns is not
useful in practice, because of the predominance of popular products in the top
rules. As a result, a number of "interestingness" measures (over 30) have been
proposed to rank rules. However, there is no agreement on which measures are
more appropriate for retail data. Moreover, since pattern mining algorithms
output thousands of association rules for each product, the ability for an
analyst to rely on ranking measures to identify the most interesting ones is
crucial. In this paper, we develop CAPA (Comparative Analysis of PAtterns), a
framework that provides analysts with the ability to compare the outcome of
interestingness measures applied to buying patterns in the retail industry. We
report on how we used CAPA to compare 34 measures applied to over 1,800 stores
of Intermarch\'e, one of the largest food retailers in France
Distribution patterns, weed incursions and origins of terrestrial flora at the Capricorn-Bunker Islands, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
A checklist of vascular plants of the 15 Capricorn-Bunker Islands (CBI) (lat 23° 11’ to 24° 07’S; long 151° 43’ to 152° 43’E) compiled from 2007/08 surveys, recorded 131 vascular plant species including 44 (34%) native and 87 (66%) naturalized species from 55 families and 104 genera. New native records include Hernandia nymphaeifolia and Boerhavia sp. (Bargara L.Pedley 5382). An increase of about 35 exotic species over 23 years was recorded indicating a weed incursion rate of 1.5 species per annum. Cakile edentula (13 islands) and Solanum americanum (12 islands) are the most widespread exotic weeds. The naturalised flora ranged from 5% at Erskine Island (low disturbance) to 68% at Lady Elliot Island (very high disturbance). Achyranthes aspera, Argusia argentea and Pisonia grandis are the only species found on all 15 islands. Six indigenous species are limited to one island: Boerhavia sp. (Bargara L.Pedley 5382), Calophyllum inophyllum, Clerodendrum inerme, Hernandia nymphaeifolia, Stephania japonica and Ximenia americana. Patterns of plant distributions, diversity and origin are discussed. Eleven indigenous species reach their southern limit at the CBI, indicating connectivity with the Indo-Pacific region. PATN analyses using native flora generated two island groups. Tryon, Heron, North West, Masthead, Wilson, Wreck and Erskine Islands are the most closely related islands. Another group of related islands includes North Reef, Lady Musgrave, Fairfax Islands, Hoskyn and One Tree Islands. With the inclusion of the exotic flora, Lady Elliot Island separated into its own distinct group. Greater conservation management efforts are required to control and minimise the introduction of exotic weed species to islands with high human visitation
Quantitative Analysis of Genealogy Using Digitised Family Trees
Driven by the popularity of television shows such as Who Do You Think You
Are? many millions of users have uploaded their family tree to web projects
such as WikiTree. Analysis of this corpus enables us to investigate genealogy
computationally. The study of heritage in the social sciences has led to an
increased understanding of ancestry and descent but such efforts are hampered
by difficult to access data. Genealogical research is typically a tedious
process involving trawling through sources such as birth and death
certificates, wills, letters and land deeds. Decades of research have developed
and examined hypotheses on population sex ratios, marriage trends, fertility,
lifespan, and the frequency of twins and triplets. These can now be tested on
vast datasets containing many billions of entries using machine learning tools.
Here we survey the use of genealogy data mining using family trees dating back
centuries and featuring profiles on nearly 7 million individuals based in over
160 countries. These data are not typically created by trained genealogists and
so we verify them with reference to third party censuses. We present results on
a range of aspects of population dynamics. Our approach extends the boundaries
of genealogy inquiry to precise measurement of underlying human phenomena

This Guide emerged from a "Summit on Women and Climate" in Bali, Indonesia, and aims to increase timely and appropriate funding for worldwide climate action initiatives led by women and their communities. The Guide is not a comprehensive resource on climate change or women's rights. Instead, it addresses an urgent need within the funding community and offers concrete, practical guidance that: Orients grantmakers to the importance of funding at the intersection of climate justice and women's rights.Draws lessons from specific examples of funding for women's climate change initiatives.Provides guidance on how funders can collaborate to direct timely and appropriate funding to women and their communities.Advocates for bringing women's voices into climate change policy discussions.Highlights the strong impact that small (less than 10,000-$50,000) grants can make in women-organized efforts to address climate change at the community level, across geographic boundaries and in global climate policy.
