Bridging between sensor measurements and symbolic ontologies through conceptual spaces
The increasing availability of sensor data through a variety of sensor-driven devices raises the need to exploit the data observed by sensors with the help of formally specified knowledge representations, such as the ones provided by the Semantic Web. In order to facilitate such a Semantic Sensor Web, the challenge is to bridge between symbolic knowledge representations and the measured data collected by sensors. In particular, one needs to map a given set of arbitrary sensor data to a particular set of symbolic knowledge representations, e.g. ontology instances. This task is particularly challenging due to the potential infinite variety of possible sensor measurements. Conceptual Spaces (CS) provide a means to represent knowledge in geometrical vector spaces in order to enable computation of similarities between knowledge entities by means of distance metrics. We propose an ontology for CS which allows to refine symbolic concepts as CS and to ground instances to so-called prototypical members described by vectors. By computing similarities in terms of spatial distances between a given set of sensor measurements and a finite set of prototypical members, the most similar instance can be identified. In that, we provide a means to bridge between the real-world as observed by sensors and symbolic representations. We also propose an initial implementation utilizing our approach for measurement-based Semantic Web Service discovery
Using Quantitative Methods as Support for Audit of the Distributed Informatics Systems
This paper highlights some issues regarding how an indicators system must be developed and used in an audit process. Distributed systems are presented from de points of view of their main properties, architectures, applications, software quality characteristics and the scope of audit process in such systems. The audit process is defined in accordance to standard ISO 19011 and the main characteristics of this process are highlighted. Before using quantitative methods in audit processes, the framework in which the indicators are built must be defined. There are presented types of indicators used in audit process and classes of measurement scale. An audit process is carried out on different levels and support indicators must be in accordance to audit object. Correct and Control Complex IoT Systems: Evaluation of a Classification for System Anomalies
In practice there are deficiencies in precise interteam communications about
system anomalies to perform troubleshooting and postmortem analysis along
different teams operating complex IoT systems. We evaluate the quality in use
of an adaptation of IEEE Std. 1044-2009 with the objective to differentiate the
handling of fault detection and fault reaction from handling of defect and its
options for defect correction. We extended the scope of IEEE Std. 1044-2009
from anomalies related to software only to anomalies related to complex IoT
systems. To evaluate the quality in use of our classification a study was
conducted at Robert Bosch GmbH. We applied our adaptation to a postmortem
analysis of an IoT solution and evaluated the quality in use by conducting
interviews with three stakeholders. Our adaptation was effectively applied and
interteam communications as well as iterative and inductive learning for
