    Multiple and single snapshot compressive beamforming

    For a sound field observed on a sensor array, compressive sensing (CS) reconstructs the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of multiple sources using a sparsity constraint. The DOA estimation is posed as an underdetermined problem by expressing the acoustic pressure at each sensor as a phase-lagged superposition of source amplitudes at all hypothetical DOAs. Regularizing with an â„“1\ell_1-norm constraint renders the problem solvable with convex optimization, and promoting sparsity gives high-resolution DOA maps. Here, the sparse source distribution is derived using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates for both single and multiple snapshots. CS does not require inversion of the data covariance matrix and thus works well even for a single snapshot where it gives higher resolution than conventional beamforming. For multiple snapshots, CS outperforms conventional high-resolution methods, even with coherent arrivals and at low signal-to-noise ratio. The superior resolution of CS is demonstrated with vertical array data from the SWellEx96 experiment for coherent multi-paths.Comment: In press Journal of Acoustical Society of Americ

    Flexible Stereo: Constrained, Non-rigid, Wide-baseline Stereo Vision for Fixed-wing Aerial Platforms

    This paper proposes a computationally efficient method to estimate the time-varying relative pose between two visual-inertial sensor rigs mounted on the flexible wings of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The estimated relative poses are used to generate highly accurate depth maps in real-time and can be employed for obstacle avoidance in low-altitude flights or landing maneuvers. The approach is structured as follows: Initially, a wing model is identified by fitting a probability density function to measured deviations from the nominal relative baseline transformation. At run-time, the prior knowledge about the wing model is fused in an Extended Kalman filter~(EKF) together with relative pose measurements obtained from solving a relative perspective N-point problem (PNP), and the linear accelerations and angular velocities measured by the two inertial measurement units (IMU) which are rigidly attached to the cameras. Results obtained from extensive synthetic experiments demonstrate that our proposed framework is able to estimate highly accurate baseline transformations and depth maps.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2018, Brisban

    Neural Network-Based DOA Estimation in the Presence of Non-Gaussian Interference

    This work addresses the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in the presence of non-Gaussian, heavy-tailed, and spatially-colored interference. Conventionally, the interference is considered to be Gaussian-distributed and spatially white. However, in practice, this assumption is not guaranteed, which results in degraded DOA estimation performance. Maximum likelihood DOA estimation in the presence of non-Gaussian and spatially colored interference is computationally complex and not practical. Therefore, this work proposes a neural network (NN) based DOA estimation approach for spatial spectrum estimation in multi-source scenarios with a-priori unknown number of sources in the presence of non-Gaussian spatially-colored interference. The proposed approach utilizes a single NN instance for simultaneous source enumeration and DOA estimation. It is shown via simulations that the proposed approach significantly outperforms conventional and NN-based approaches in terms of probability of resolution, estimation accuracy, and source enumeration accuracy in conditions of low SIR, small sample support, and when the angular separation between the source DOAs and the spatially-colored interference is small.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic System

    Direction of Arrival Estimation in Low-Cost Frequency Scanning Array Antenna Systems

    RÉSUMÉ Cette thèse propose des méthodes d'estimation de la direction d'arrivée (DOA) et d'amélioration de la résolution angulaire applicables aux antennes à balayage de fréquence (Frequency Scanning Antenna ou FSA) et présente un développement analytique et des confirmations expérimentales des méthodes proposées. Les FSA sont un sous-ensemble d'antennes à balayage électronique dont l'angle du faisceau principal change en faisant varier la fréquence des signaux. L'utilisation des FSA est un compromis entre des antennes à balayage de phase (phased arrays antennas) plus coûteuses et plus complexes, et des antennes à balayage mécanique plus lentes et non agiles. Bien que l'agilité et le faible coût des FSA les rendent un choix plausible dans certaines applications, les FSA à faible coût peuvent ne pas être conformes aux exigences souhaitées pour l'application cible telles que les exigences de résolution angulaire. Ainsi, cette recherche tente d'abord de caractériser les capacités de résolution angulaire de certains systèmes d'antennes FSA sélectionnés. Elle poursuit en explorant des modifications ou extensions aux algorithmes de super-résolution capables d'améliorer la résolution angulaire de l'antenne et de les adapter pour être appliqués aux FSA. Deux méthodes d'estimation de la résolution angulaire, l'estimation du maximum de vraisemblance (Maximum Likelihood ou ML) et la formation du faisceau de variance minimale de Capon (Minimum Variance Beamforming ou MVB) sont étudiées dans cette recherche. Les deux méthodes sont modifiées pour être applicables aux FSA. De plus, les méthodes d'étalonnage et de pré-traitement requises pour chaque méthode sont également introduites. Les résultats de simulation ont montré qu'en sélectionnant des paramètres corrects, il est possible d'améliorer la résolution angulaire au-delà de la limitation de la largeur de faisceau des FSA en utilisant les deux méthodes. Les critères pour lesquels chaque méthode fonctionne le mieux sont discutés et l'analyse pour justifier les conditions présentées est donnée.----------ABSTRACT This research investigates direction of arrival (DOA) estimation and angular resolution enhancement methods applicable to frequency scanning antennas (FSA) and provides analytical development and experimental validation for the proposed methods. FSAs are a subset of electronically scanning antennas, which scan the angle of their main beam by varying the frequency of the signals. Using FSA is a trade-off between more expensive and complex phase array antennas and slower and non-agile mechanical scanning antennas. Although agility and low-cost of FSAs make them a plausible choice in some application, low-cost FSAs may not comply with the desired requirements for the target application such as angular resolution requirements. Thus, this research attempts to first characterize the angular resolution capabilities of some selected FSA antenna systems, and then modify or extend super-resolution algorithms capable of enhancing the angular resolution of the antenna and adapt them to be applied to FSAs. Two angular resolution estimation methods, maximum likelihood estimation (ML) and Capon minimum variance beamforming (MVB), are studied in this research. Both methods are modified to be applicable to FSAs. In addition, the calibration and pre-processing methods required for each method are also introduced. Simulation results show that by selecting correct parameters, it is possible to enhance angular resolution beyond the beamwidth limitation of FSAs using both methods. The criteria for which each method performs the best are discussed and an analysis supporting the presented conditions are given. The proposed methods are also validated using the measured antenna radiation pattern of an 8-element FSA which is built based on a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) waveguide. In addition, the experimental results using a beam scanning parabolic reflector antenna using a frequency multiplexed antenna feed is given. The design limitations of this antenna reduces the performance of angular resolution enhancement methods. Therefore, a hybrid scanning system combining mechanical and frequency scanning using the beam scanning reflector antenna is also proposed

    AoA-aware Probabilistic Indoor Location Fingerprinting using Channel State Information

    With expeditious development of wireless communications, location fingerprinting (LF) has nurtured considerable indoor location based services (ILBSs) in the field of Internet of Things (IoT). For most pattern-matching based LF solutions, previous works either appeal to the simple received signal strength (RSS), which suffers from dramatic performance degradation due to sophisticated environmental dynamics, or rely on the fine-grained physical layer channel state information (CSI), whose intricate structure leads to an increased computational complexity. Meanwhile, the harsh indoor environment can also breed similar radio signatures among certain predefined reference points (RPs), which may be randomly distributed in the area of interest, thus mightily tampering the location mapping accuracy. To work out these dilemmas, during the offline site survey, we first adopt autoregressive (AR) modeling entropy of CSI amplitude as location fingerprint, which shares the structural simplicity of RSS while reserving the most location-specific statistical channel information. Moreover, an additional angle of arrival (AoA) fingerprint can be accurately retrieved from CSI phase through an enhanced subspace based algorithm, which serves to further eliminate the error-prone RP candidates. In the online phase, by exploiting both CSI amplitude and phase information, a novel bivariate kernel regression scheme is proposed to precisely infer the target's location. Results from extensive indoor experiments validate the superior localization performance of our proposed system over previous approaches

    This note formulates a deterministic recovery result for vectors xx from quadratic measurements of the form (Ax)i(Ax)j‾(Ax)_i \overline{(Ax)_j} for some left-invertible AA. Recovery is exact, or stable in the noisy case, when the couples (i,j)(i,j) are chosen as edges of a well-connected graph. One possible way of obtaining the solution is as a feasible point of a simple semidefinite program. Furthermore, we show how the proportionality constant in the error estimate depends on the spectral gap of a data-weighted graph Laplacian. Such quadratic measurements have found applications in phase retrieval, angular synchronization, and more recently interferometric waveform inversion

    Geodetic monitoring of complex shaped infrastructures using Ground-Based InSAR

    In the context of climate change, alternatives to fossil energies need to be used as much as possible to produce electricity. Hydroelectric power generation through the utilisation of dams stands out as an exemplar of highly effective methodologies in this endeavour. Various monitoring sensors can be installed with different characteristics w.r.t. spatial resolution, temporal resolution and accuracy to assess their safe usage. Among the array of techniques available, it is noteworthy that ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) has not yet been widely adopted for this purpose. Despite its remarkable equilibrium between the aforementioned attributes, its sensitivity to atmospheric disruptions, specific acquisition geometry, and the requisite for phase unwrapping collectively contribute to constraining its usage. Several processing strategies are developed in this thesis to capitalise on all the opportunities of GB-SAR systems, such as continuous, flexible and autonomous observation combined with high resolutions and accuracy. The first challenge that needs to be solved is to accurately localise and estimate the azimuth of the GB-SAR to improve the geocoding of the image in the subsequent step. A ray tracing algorithm and tomographic techniques are used to recover these external parameters of the sensors. The introduction of corner reflectors for validation purposes confirms a significant error reduction. However, for the subsequent geocoding, challenges persist in scenarios involving vertical structures due to foreshortening and layover, which notably compromise the geocoding quality of the observed points. These issues arise when multiple points at varying elevations are encapsulated within a singular resolution cell, posing difficulties in pinpointing the precise location of the scattering point responsible for signal return. To surmount these hurdles, a Bayesian approach grounded in intensity models is formulated, offering a tool to enhance the accuracy of the geocoding process. The validation is assessed on a dam in the black forest in Germany, characterised by a very specific structure. The second part of this thesis is focused on the feasibility of using GB-SAR systems for long-term geodetic monitoring of large structures. A first assessment is made by testing large temporal baselines between acquisitions for epoch-wise monitoring. Due to large displacements, the phase unwrapping can not recover all the information. An improvement is made by adapting the geometry of the signal processing with the principal component analysis. The main case study consists of several campaigns from different stations at Enguri Dam in Georgia. The consistency of the estimated displacement map is assessed by comparing it to a numerical model calibrated on the plumblines data. It exhibits a strong agreement between the two results and comforts the usage of GB-SAR for epoch-wise monitoring, as it can measure several thousand points on the dam. It also exhibits the possibility of detecting local anomalies in the numerical model. Finally, the instrument has been installed for continuous monitoring for over two years at Enguri Dam. An adequate flowchart is developed to eliminate the drift happening with classical interferometric algorithms to achieve the accuracy required for geodetic monitoring. The analysis of the obtained time series confirms a very plausible result with classical parametric models of dam deformations. Moreover, the results of this processing strategy are also confronted with the numerical model and demonstrate a high consistency. The final comforting result is the comparison of the GB-SAR time series with the output from four GNSS stations installed on the dam crest. The developed algorithms and methods increase the capabilities of the GB-SAR for dam monitoring in different configurations. It can be a valuable and precious supplement to other classical sensors for long-term geodetic observation purposes as well as short-term monitoring in cases of particular dam operations
