Digital Mathematics Libraries: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The idea of a World digital mathematics library (DML) has been around since the turn of the 21th century. We feel that it is time to make it a reality, starting in a modest way from successful bricks that have already been built, but with an ambitious goal in mind. After a brief historical overview of publishing mathematics, an estimate of the size and a characterisation of the bulk of documents to be included in the DML, we turn to proposing a model for a Reference Digital Mathematics Library--a network of institutions where the digital documents would be physically archived. This pattern based rather on the bottom-up strategy seems to be more practicable and consistent with the digital nature of the DML. After describing the model we summarise what can and should be done in order to accomplish the vision. The current state of some of the local libraries that could contribute to the global views are described with more details

MDML: The Mathdoc Digital Mathematics Library

International audienceFollowing the steps of previous projects such as EuDML, Mathdoc is launching its Digital Mathematics Library. Based on a reliable infrastructure made for Numdam, learning from previous projects, and relying on a network of institutions we trust, we aim to push the ball further for accessing mathematical content online. We focus for a start on the aggregation part, aiming to reach a critical mass of mathematical content by harvesting various sources: OJS instances, preprint repositories , and locals DMLs. We thus build a database of mathematical documents, linking back to the source's website for accessing content

Should Diamond OA be viewed as a threat to librarians?

International audienceOpen access has become a growth opportunity for publishers with the " Gold Open Access APC " model and the hybrid model. During the period 2012-2015, these proposals generated a lot of lively discussions. has made some recommendations to French mathematicians for their publications asking them not to choose the author-pays option for open access, especially for hybrid journals, and not to include publication fees (APC, author processing charges) in funding requests. The rejection of the author-pays model by French mathematicians gives a boost to the development of other economic models of scientific edition, especially the Diamond OA (Gold OA without APC). This new model requires new skills from librarians. In this paper we present the Diamond OA publishing model, with a stress on the French situation in mathematics, and then explore the problem of how this model could impact libraries and librarians. Everybody says that Open Access is a real opportunity for libraries but we would like to be a little provocative: is Diamond Open Access a threat to librarians

DML and RusDML – Virtual Library Initiatives for Covering All Mathematics Electronically

    Get PDF
With the rapidly growing activities in electronic publishing ideas came up to install global repositories which deal with three mainstreams in this enterprise: storing the electronic material currently available, pursuing projects to solve the archiving problem for this material with the ambition to preserve the content in readable form for future generations, and to capture the printed literature in digital versions providing good access and search facilities for the readers. Long-term availability of published research articles in mathematics and easy access to them is a strong need for researchers working with mathematics. Hence in this domain some pioneering projects have been established addressing the above mentioned problems

    CEDRICS: When CEDRAM Meets Tralics

    Get PDF
summary:We describe CEDRICS, a general purpose system for automated journal production entirely based on a LaTeX input format. We show how the very basic ideas that initiated the whole effort turned into an efficient system because of the ability of LaTeX markup to parametrise simultaneously and without compromise high typographical quality for the PDF output as well as accurate XML metadata with (presentation) MathML formulas. This was made possible by the availability of two entirely independent LaTeX source processors with specific focus but full TeX-macro language support: PdfLaTeX by Hàn Thế Thành, and Tralics by José Grimm
