Will You Look Me in the Eye? The Embrace and Denial of Human Dignity on Marquette Campus

    Get PDF
With a foundation in Levinas\u27 pseudo-ethical philosophy of the Phenomena of the Face, this project provided a definition of human dignity and considered whether or not the Marquette University community practices a common respect for human dignity in everyday interactions on the streets of Marquette campus -- focusing in on Wisconsin Avenue due to its constant traffic of both Marquette University students and faculty and Milwaukee community members. This project observed typical day to day interactions that occur while walking around Marquette University\u27s campus with a specific emphasis on how people affiliated with Marquette University react to other Marquette community members as well as members of the Milwaukee community on campus. Ultimately, the research sought to consider the level of awareness Marquette affiliates have upon the subject of human dignity and calls for we as a university to raise awareness about the necessity and nuances of human dignity in everyday interactions.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1019/thumbnail.jp

Crossing 21st and State: Marquette-Milwaukee Relations

    Get PDF
This project delves into relations between Marquette University and the Milwaukee community, analyzes potential issues, and suggests proposals for continued change. Through field observations, multiple interviews, and wide scholarly research, I\u27ve ascertained that Marquette University, a school long-deemed isolationist and elite, is at a pivotal point in their community engagement. While Marquette shows efforts toward more meaningful community engagement, these efforts could fall short, especially if not continually cultivated. For Marquette to signal sustained and deep investment in community engagement, I propose an awareness campaign, more open and honest discussion about current tensions, and more purposeful actions of Marquette to truly become part of and integrated with Milwaukee.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1040/thumbnail.jp

The Revolution Will Be Televised But Not Supported: Student Protest at Marquette University

    Get PDF
This project examines the factors that affect the presence of student activism and student protest at Marquette University. The current social and political environment of the United States has created an exigence to discuss how students at Marquette critique their surroundings. Data is collected from a variety of sources including the author’s auto-ethnography, a review of historical and scholarly data, institutional data, and student and faculty interviews. Overall, the data shows that student protest and student activism at Marquette University exists amid a series of conflicting influences. The prioritization of donor-based funding and positive publicity, the ambiguity in the meaning of Marquette values, and the prevalence of repressive tolerance create an environment in which meaningful student activism is stifled.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1036/thumbnail.jp

2001 WisDOT Specifications - Construction Note

    Get PDF
For the past several years, Marquette University has been conducting a research study for WisDOT on tining patterns to reduce the objectionable tire/pavement whine. During the research study, WisDOT issued Construction Notes to implement the interim results of the research rather than tine the pavement according to Subsection 415.5.9.6.3 of the Standard Specifications. In the completed study, Marquette University has determined that a skewed, randomly spaced, transversely tined surface results in the lowest levels of pavement whine while retaining the favorable friction characteristics achieved under the current specifications. The overall noise level is not reduced by skewed randomly tined surfaces. The research study wasn’t completed in time to include the recommended tining requirements in the bidding documents for 2001 construction projects. However, Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association (WCPA) members are aware of the findings of the research study. All WCPA member contractors are intending to use the randomly spaced tining rake, meeting the study recommendations, during the 2001 construction season. Therefore, WisDOT is implementing the research study recommendations on randomly spaced rake for the 2001 construction season with this Construction Note
