Control theoretic models of pointing
This article presents an empirical comparison of four models from manual control theory on their ability to model targeting behaviour by human users using a mouse: McRuer’s Crossover, Costello’s Surge, second-order lag (2OL), and the Bang-bang model. Such dynamic models are generative, estimating not only movement time, but also pointer position, velocity, and acceleration on a moment-to-moment basis. We describe an experimental framework for acquiring pointing actions and automatically fitting the parameters of mathematical models to the empirical data. We present the use of time-series, phase space, and Hooke plot visualisations of the experimental data, to gain insight into human pointing dynamics. We find that the identified control models can generate a range of dynamic behaviours that captures aspects of human pointing behaviour to varying degrees. Conditions with a low index of difficulty (ID) showed poorer fit because their unconstrained nature leads naturally to more behavioural variability. We report on characteristics of human surge behaviour (the initial, ballistic sub-movement) in pointing, as well as differences in a number of controller performance measures, including overshoot, settling time, peak time, and rise time. We describe trade-offs among the models. We conclude that control theory offers a promising complement to Fitts’ law based approaches in HCI, with models providing representations and predictions of human pointing dynamics, which can improve our understanding of pointing and inform design
Aerial navigation in obstructed environments with embedded nonlinear model predictive control
We propose a methodology for autonomous aerial navigation and obstacle
avoidance of micro aerial vehicles (MAV) using nonlinear model predictive
control (NMPC) and we demonstrate its effectiveness with laboratory
experiments. The proposed methodology can accommodate obstacles of arbitrary,
potentially non-convex, geometry. The NMPC problem is solved using PANOC: a
fast numerical optimization method which is completely matrix-free, is not
sensitive to ill conditioning, involves only simple algebraic operations and is
suitable for embedded NMPC. A C89 implementation of PANOC solves the NMPC
problem at a rate of 20Hz on board a lab-scale MAV. The MAV performs smooth
maneuvers moving around an obstacle. For increased autonomy, we propose a
simple method to compensate for the reduction of thrust over time, which comes
from the depletion of the MAV's battery, by estimating the thrust constant
BrainFrame: A node-level heterogeneous accelerator platform for neuron simulations
Objective: The advent of High-Performance Computing (HPC) in recent years has
led to its increasing use in brain study through computational models. The
scale and complexity of such models are constantly increasing, leading to
challenging computational requirements. Even though modern HPC platforms can
often deal with such challenges, the vast diversity of the modeling field does
not permit for a single acceleration (or homogeneous) platform to effectively
address the complete array of modeling requirements. Approach: In this paper we
propose and build BrainFrame, a heterogeneous acceleration platform,
incorporating three distinct acceleration technologies, a Dataflow Engine, a
Xeon Phi and a GP-GPU. The PyNN framework is also integrated into the platform.
As a challenging proof of concept, we analyze the performance of BrainFrame on
different instances of a state-of-the-art neuron model, modeling the Inferior-
Olivary Nucleus using a biophysically-meaningful, extended Hodgkin-Huxley
representation. The model instances take into account not only the neuronal-
network dimensions but also different network-connectivity circumstances that
can drastically change application workload characteristics. Main results: The
synthetic approach of three HPC technologies demonstrated that BrainFrame is
better able to cope with the modeling diversity encountered. Our performance
analysis shows clearly that the model directly affect performance and all three
technologies are required to cope with all the model use cases.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, 5 table
A Neural Circuit Model for Prospective Control of Interceptive Reaching
Two prospective controllers of hand movements in catching -- both based on required velocity control -- were simulated. Under certain conditions, this required velocity controlled to overshoots of the future interception point. These overshoots were absent in pertinent experiments. To remedy this shortcoming, the required velocity model was reformulated in terms of a neural network, the Vector Integration To Endpoint model, to create a Required Velocity Integration To Endpoint modeL Addition of a parallel relative velocity channel, resulting in the Relative and Required Velocity Integration To Endpoint model, provided a better account for the experimentally observed kinematics than the existing, purely behavioral models. Time-Optimal Path Tracking via Reachability Analysis
Given a geometric path, the Time-Optimal Path Tracking problem consists in
finding the control strategy to traverse the path time-optimally while
regulating tracking errors. A simple yet effective approach to this problem is
to decompose the controller into two components: (i)~a path controller, which
modulates the parameterization of the desired path in an online manner,
yielding a reference trajectory; and (ii)~a tracking controller, which takes
the reference trajectory and outputs joint torques for tracking. However, there
is one major difficulty: the path controller might not find any feasible
reference trajectory that can be tracked by the tracking controller because of
torque bounds. In turn, this results in degraded tracking performances. Here,
we propose a new path controller that is guaranteed to find feasible reference
trajectories by accounting for possible future perturbations. The main
technical tool underlying the proposed controller is Reachability Analysis, a
new method for analyzing path parameterization problems. Simulations show that
