Conservation Management of Historical Assets Through Community Involvement A Case Study of Kanazawa Machiya in Japan
Under the urban architecture paradigm for urban regeneration, the scope for research related to historical assets has broadened. Historical assets consist of private and public goods. The management responsibility of managing private goods is allocated to individuals, which has complicated the relationships among stakeholders and led to dissipation of assets and conflicts. To address this issue, this study focuses on community involvement in the conservation management of Kanazawa machiya, a Japanese traditional architecture style.This study was conducted in three phases. The first phase involved classification of the types of conservation management activities and the local actors related to Kanazawa machiya. In the second phase, the relationship between different stakeholders and the characteristics of conservation management activities were investigated using the DEMATEL method. Finally, it drew on the Power-Interest Grid to examine stakeholders' performance capability.The case study of Kanazawa machiya indicates that the building-up of the conservation management system involves the local actors and development of their activities. It also shows an incremental shift away from a government-led system to one based on government-citizen cooperation. This study demonstrates the necessity of community involvement and civic activities for the conservation management of historical assets
High efficiency dark-to-bright exciton conversion in carbon nanotubes
We report that dark excitons can have a large contribution to the emission
intensity in carbon nanotubes due to an efficient exciton conversion from a
dark state to a bright state. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements are
used to investigate decay dynamics and diffusion properties of excitons, and we
obtain intrinsic lifetimes and diffusion lengths of bright excitons as well as
diffusion coefficients for both bright and dark excitons. We find that the
dark-to-bright transition rates can be considerably high, and that more than
half of the dark excitons can be transformed into the bright excitons. The
state transition rates have a large chirality dependence with a family pattern,
and the conversion efficiency is found to be significantly enhanced by adsorbed
air molecules on the surface of the nanotubes. Our findings show the nontrivial
significance of the dark excitons on the emission kinetics in low dimensional
materials, and demonstrate the potential for engineering the dark-to-bright
conversion process by using surface interactions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Local Strain and its Influence on Mechanical - Electromagnetic Properties of Nb3Sn and Nb3Al Strands
Resistance risk assessment of the novel complex II inhibitor pyflubumide in the polyphagous pest Tetranychus urticae
Pyflubumide is a novel selective carboxanilide acaricide that inhibits mitochondrial complex II of spider mite species such as Tetranychus urticae. We explored the baseline toxicity and potential cross-resistance risk of pyflubumide in a reference panel of T. urticae strains resistant to various acaricides with different modes of action. A cyenopyrafen-resistant strain (JPR) was identified as the only strain with low-to-moderate level of cross-resistance to pyflubumide (LC50 = 49.07 mg/L). In a resistance risk assessment approach, JPR was subsequently selected which led to two highly resistant strains JPR-R1 (RR = 466.7) and JPR-R2 (RR = 614.8). Interestingly, compared to adult females, resistance was much less pronounced in adult males and eggs of the two JPR-R strains. In order to elucidate resistance mechanisms, we first sequenced the complex II subunits in susceptible and resistant strains, but target-site insensitivity could not be detected. In contrast, synergism/antagonism experiments strongly suggested that cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are involved in pyflubumide resistance. We therefore conducted genome-wide gene expression experiments to investigate constitutive and induced expression patterns and documented the overexpression of five cytochrome P450 and four carboxyl/choline esterase genes in the JPR-R strains after pyflubumide exposure. Together, we provide a first resistance risk assessment of a novel complex II inhibitor and provide first evidence for metabolic resistance mediated by cytochrome P450s in T. urticae
