Effects of periodically modulated coupling on amplitude death in nonidentical oscillators
The effects of periodically modulated coupling on amplitude death in two
coupled nonidentical oscillators are explored. The AD domain could be
significantly influenced by tuning the modulation amplitude and the modulation
frequency of the modulated coupling strength. There is an optimal value of
modulation amplitude for the modulated coupling with which the largest AD
domain is observed in the parameter space. The AD domain is enlarged with the
decrease of the modulation frequency for a given small modulation amplitude,
while is shrunk with decrease of the modulation frequency for a given large
modulation amplitude. The mechanism of AD in the presence of periodic
modulation in the coupling is investigated via the local condition Lyapunov
exponent of the coupled system. The stability of AD state can be well
characterized by conditional Lyapunov exponent. The coupled system experiencing
from the oscillatory state to AD is clearly indicated by the observation that
the conditional Lyapunov exponent transits from positive to negative. Our
results are helpful to many potential applications for the research of

Determinants of the voltage dependence of G protein modulation within calcium channel β subunits
CaVβ subunits of voltage-gated calcium channels contain two conserved domains, a src-homology-3 (SH3) domain and a guanylate kinase-like (GK) domain with an intervening HOOK domain. We have shown in a previous study that, although Gβγ-mediated inhibitory modulation of CaV2.2 channels did not require the interaction of a CaVβ subunit with the CaVα1 subunit, when such interaction was prevented by a mutation in the α1 subunit, G protein modulation could not be removed by a large depolarization and showed voltage-independent properties (Leroy et al., J Neurosci 25:6984–6996, 2005). In this study, we have investigated the ability of mutant and truncated CaVβ subunits to support voltage-dependent G protein modulation in order to determine the minimal domain of the CaVβ subunit that is required for this process. We have coexpressed the CaVβ subunit constructs with CaV2.2 and α2δ-2, studied modulation by the activation of the dopamine D2 receptor, and also examined basal tonic modulation. Our main finding is that the CaVβ subunit GK domains, from either β1b or β2, are sufficient to restore voltage dependence to G protein modulation. We also found that the removal of the variable HOOK region from β2a promotes tonic voltage-dependent G protein modulation. We propose that the absence of the HOOK region enhances Gβγ binding affinity, leading to greater tonic modulation by basal levels of Gβγ. This tonic modulation requires the presence of an SH3 domain, as tonic modulation is not supported by any of the CaVβ subunit GK domains alone
The Konkoly Blazhko Survey: Is light-curve modulation a common property of RRab stars?
A systematic survey to establish the true incidence rate of the Blazhko
modulation among short-period, fundamental-mode, Galactic field RR Lyrae stars
has been accomplished. The Konkoly Blazhko Survey (KBS) was initiated in 2004.
Since then more than 750 nights of observation have been devoted to this
project. A sample of 30 RRab stars was extensively observed, and light-curve
modulation was detected in 14 cases. The 47% occurrence rate of the modulation
is much larger than any previous estimate. The significant increase of the
detected incidence rate is mostly due to the discovery of small-amplitude
modulation. Half of the Blazhko variables in our sample show modulation with so
small amplitude that definitely have been missed in the previous surveys. We
have found that the modulation can be very unstable in some cases, e.g. RY Com
showed regular modulation only during one part of the observations while during
two seasons it had stable light curve with abrupt, small changes in the
pulsation amplitude. This type of light-curve variability is also hard to
detect in other Survey's data. The larger frequency of the light-curve
modulation of RRab stars makes it even more important to find the still lacking
explanation of the Blazhko phenomenon. The validity of the [Fe/H](P,phi_{31})
relation using the mean light curves of Blazhko variables is checked in our
sample. We have found that the formula gives accurate result for
small-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars, and this is also the case for
large-modulation-amplitude stars if the light curve has complete phase
coverage. However, if the data of large-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars are
not extended enough (e.g. < 500 data points from < 15 nights), the formula may

Fitting Blazhko light curves
The correct amplitude and phase modulation formalism of the Blazhko
modulation is given. The harmonic order dependent amplitude and phase
modulation form is equivalent with the Fourier decomposition of multiplets. The
amplitude and phase modulation formalism used in electronic transmission
technique as introduced by Benk\H{o}, Szab\'o and Papar\'o (2011, MNRAS 417,
974) for Blazhko stars oversimplifies the amplitude and phase modulation
functions thus it does not describe the light variation in full detail.
The results of the different formalisms are compared and documented by

Effectiveness of sensory modulation in treating sensory modulation disorders in adults with schizophrenia: a Systematic Literature Review
Sensory modulation, as a treatment for sensory modulation disorders in adults with psychiatric conditions, has been implemented by occupational therapists for more than two decades. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to evaluate published research evidence relating to this intervention. The aim of the study was to determine if there was established evidence for the effectiveness of sensory modulation in treating sensory modulation disorder in adults with schizophrenia and to identify any gaps in knowledge to guide further research. We utilized Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)’s levels of evidence and recommendation grading and the Rosalind Franklin Research Appraisal Instrument (RF-QRA) to review selected articles. The results were then summarized and reported utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework. A total of 17 studies were included in the study. We concluded that there is preliminary evidence for the existence of sensory modulation disorder in schizophrenia and the effectiveness of sensory modulation interventions for reducing distress. We recommended further studies on the effectiveness of sensory modulation with better rigor and advise that guidelines be developed for use in practice by clinicians.Griffith Health, School of Applied PsychologyNo Full Tex
An extensive photometric study of the Blazhko RR Lyrae star RZ Lyr
The analysis of recent, extended multicolour CCD and archive photoelectric,
photographic and visual observations has revealed several important properties
of RZ Lyr, an RRab-type variable exhibiting large-amplitude Blazhko modulation.
On the time-base of \sim110 yr, a strict anticorrelation between the pulsation
and modulation period changes is established. The light curve of RZ Lyr shows a
remarkable bump on the descending branch in the small-amplitude phase of the
modulation, similarly to the light curves of bump Cepheids. We speculate that
the stellar structure temporally suits a 4:1 resonance between the periods of
the fundamental and one of the higher-order radial modes in this modulation
phase. The light-curve variation of RZ Lyr can be correctly fitted with a
two-modulation-component solution; the 121 d period of the main modulation is
nearly but not exactly four times longer than the period of the secondary
modulation component. Using the inverse photometric method, the variations in
the pulsation-averaged values of the physical parameters in different phases of

Multidimensional Index Modulation in Wireless Communications
In index modulation schemes, information bits are conveyed through indexing
of transmission entities such as antennas, subcarriers, times slots, precoders,
subarrays, and radio frequency (RF) mirrors. Index modulation schemes are
attractive for their advantages such as good performance, high rates, and
hardware simplicity. This paper focuses on index modulation schemes in which
multiple transmission entities, namely, {\em antennas}, {\em time slots}, and
{\em RF mirrors}, are indexed {\em simultaneously}. Recognizing that such
multidimensional index modulation schemes encourage sparsity in their transmit
signal vectors, we propose efficient signal detection schemes that use
compressive sensing based reconstruction algorithms. Results show that, for a
given rate, improved performance is achieved when the number of indexed
transmission entities is increased. We also explore indexing opportunities in
{\em load modulation}, which is a modulation scheme that offers power
efficiency and reduced RF hardware complexity advantages in multiantenna
